Lisbon is the perfect weekend break around September and October time when the stifling heat of the summer has cooled and the bustling crowds of the high season start to thin out. If you are based out of Europe, you can search for some good deals on the regular and short weekend flights. From exploring the city on foot, taking a famous tram ride, visiting hilltop castles, surfing at the local beaches or simply kicking back and relaxing with sangria there is plenty to do for everyone wanting a fun weekend away.

Boasting impressive landscapes of rugged fjords, bubbling hot springs and ancient glaciers Iceland – with its conveniently placed ring road – creates the perfect opportunity for adventure. The shoulder season, from September through to November is a great time to visit, the cold temperatures of winter haven’t quite arrived yet, the roads are still passable and the darkest and clearest skies of autumn mean there is a chance of witnessing the spectacular northern lights. Iceland can be pricey but if you hire a campervan and check out WOW air flights you can road trip on a reasonable budget. A road trip is the best way to explore Iceland’s free attractions with amazing waterfalls, hiking trails, glaciers, geysers and ending the days soaking in hot springs.

If you’ve managed to save up those charter tips and want to put them to good use whilst having had enough of the Mediterranean then head stateside to California. A perfect autumn location, with plenty to do in the golden state. You can witness the instagrammable colours without the crowds in Yosemite national park, explore a quieter San Francisco and drink your way to the end of the wine season in Napa Valley.

So you are craving some time away but need to watch the budget then Europe has plenty of affordable deals, particularly in Budapest. You don’t need to spend a lot when you arrive either, there are lots of cheaper hostels to stay in and you can easily spend your time simply taking in Budapest’s cool vibe by exploring the amazing architecture throughout the city and heading up to Fishermans Bastion for panoramic views over the city. Take a walking tour to get your dose of culture and history. Be sure to save your money for the thermal baths and then head to the Jewish quarter for a ruin pub crawl.

What better place to relax than the birthplace of yoga itself, India has multiple yoga retreats to choose from. Although a vast country, generally October is a great time for dry and sunny weather. As well as relaxing and giving yourself some well deserved ‘you time’ there could also be an option here to build up on skills for your CV for the next season, take a little more time and complete a yoga teacher course.

Once charter season ends if you still find yourself based in the Mediterranean then there are plenty of destinations for foodie trips away. Whether you’re a chef that desperately needs time away eating other peoples food or you want to treat your tastebuds then book a trip to one of the best foodie nations, Italy. Tuscany is a great destination for a trip all about food around autumn time, the weather cools down and its the season of olive harvest and truffle hunting. There’s also plenty of foodie festivals happening in October.
