Six simple superyacht cocktails you need to make today

Ever feel like you’re in a cocktail rut at about this time of the summer? If you’re sick of serving chilled rosé and prosecco, bored of making G&T’s and looking for something a bit more creative to refresh your guests, read on. The best part is that you probably have all the ingredients for these superyacht cocktails right now in the galley.

The Guadalajara Sour

Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city is also the birthplace of Mariachi music, and what’s more Mexican than tequila? Despite the name, this is the perfect cocktail to serve cruising around Ibiza and Mallorca with a local rosé, widely produced and enjoyed in Spain.

What you’ll need:

1 3/4 ounces blanco tequila
3/4 ounce lemon juice
3/4 ounce simple syrup
3/4 ounce chilled rosé

How to Make It:

Combine the tequila, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker, fill with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled rocks glass over fresh ice. The trick is keeping the rosé floating on the top of the glass is to use a spoon (with its back side facing up) to slowly pour in the rosé. Add a twist of grapefruit if you are feeling adventurous!

The Szarlotka

Szarlotka is Polish for apple pie, and that’s exactly what it tastes like, but despite its Polish roots, you should be making this drink cruising the Italian coastline. With 997 apple varieties in Italy (there are only 1,227 in the world) you’ll be hard pressed to get a better apple nectar anywhere in the world. It’s a perfect match for barbeque ribs!

What you’ll need:

1 1⁄2 oz. Zubrówka vodka or chamomile-infused vodka (it’s not as hard as it sounds to make but you’ll want to prepare this a day ahead)
Unfiltered apple juice

How to Make It:

Pour vodka into a highball glass over ice. Add apple juice to taste.

Perfect for an afternoon lounging on the aft deck by the pool, this is an alternative to the standard Rum & Coke that uses the refreshing bitter taste of grapefruit to waken the senses instead of all that caffeine. (Recipe by Jim Meehan of PDT bar in New York City.)

What you’ll need:

2 oz. English-style white rum, such as Banks 5 Island or Chairman’s Reserve
3⁄4 oz. fresh lime juice
3 oz. artisanal pink grapefruit soda
1 crosswise slice lime or lemon

How to Make It:

Combine the rum and juice in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice; shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass and fill with ice; add soda and garnish with lime.

Sgroppino or Sorbetto

You have probably seen the locals sipping a white milkshakey looking small drink at the end of a meal in Italy before. A Sgroppino or Sorbetto, as it is known in some regions, is a whipped lemon sorbet with a touch of vodka and prosecco. Also great as a palate cleanser in between courses, it is the perfect end to a summer meal when it’s just too hot to serve dessert.

What you’ll need:

1⁄3 cup lemon sorbet
3 oz. prosecco
1 oz. vodka

How to Make It:

Whisk together the sorbet and with a bit of prosecco until fully incorporated then slowly pour in the vodka and then the remainder of the prosecco. Serve in a martini glass or champagne flute and add a berry on top for a bit of sweetness.

If you are serving this cocktail during, or after a meal, you’re doing this drink all wrong! This Venetian cocktail, now popular all over Italy, should only be served before eating. The bitterness of the Campari makes your mouth water and livens up the taste buds for your meal so reserve this one for aperitifs only.

What you’ll need:

3 oz. prosecco
1 1⁄2 oz. Campari (or Aperol for a lighter, less bitter taste)
1 1⁄2 oz. soda water
Orange slice, to garnish

How to Make It:

Combine prosecco, liqueur and soda water in a tall glass filled with ice; garnish with orange slice.

Tinto de Verano

Never thought of using red wine for spritzers? Well, you can with the Tinto de Verano, which literally means the “red wine of summer”. The combination of red wine and citrus makes a refreshingly sweet beverage on a hot summer’s day. You can substitute a good quality lemon-lime soda with 7-up and seltzer water if you need to!

What you’ll need:

1 cup red wine
1 cup lightly sweetened lemon-lime soda
1 lemon wedge
Seltzer (optional)

How to Make It:

Combine the red wine and lemon-lime soda over crushed ice and add the lemon wedge. Add seltzer to taste.
