In anticipation of a larger Series A in Q4 2023, Edorado, the Dutch zero-emission powerboat company, has announced the launch of a bridge round in support of the Edorado 8S model.

The Dutch company is currently raising €1.75 million in order to complete the construction of their first commercial powerboat – the Edorado 8S, an 8m, all-electric, digitally connected powerboat with proprietary hydrofoil technology. According to the product roadmap, the 8S will be introduced to the market in Q3 2023 (ready for the Cannes Yachting Festival) while a 12-meter model will also be developed simultaneously.

The Product

By eliminating oil, emissions, wake and noise, the 8S reduces air and water pollution and prevents the destruction of natural beauty. Drivers can enjoy power, sleek design and speed guilt-free.

The aim of co-founders Giel Groothuis and Godert Van Hardenbroek is to present innovative designs to the powerboat market. The pair have spent several years intensely developing an ultra-fast premium design which is sure to send metaphorical waves throughout the industry.

The 8S can glide over the surface of the water, as it can accelerate to speeds that cause the hull to lift clean off the water. This is due to the design’s unique combination of retractable hydrofoils and an electric drive-train.

Godert Van Hardenbroek – co-Founder & Product Architect states:

“Once you reach take-off speed, you can really feel the acceleration as the resistance disappears and you feel a strong sensation of release, of being propelled forward. And then, unlike traditional powerboats – constantly smashing into waves – the Edorado flies right over the surface, like a sports aircraft. It glides silently over the water: a new and totally unique feeling, like combining the speed of a powerboat with the tranquillity of sailing.”

A patented safety system is part of the 8S’s embedded equipment, along with state-of-the-art tech features. The boat’s smart computer can constantly adjust its two foils which makes for better safety and stability. A unique hydrofoil system, equipped with a proprietary Automatic Control System is also part of the design. The ‘twin drive’ system provides users with unparalleled control, as the two propellors make the navigation of tight spaces thoroughly enjoyable.

The design of the 8S is based on ‘timeless, classic appeal‘ which ensures that the boat not only provides a futuristic and impressive performance, but also looks the part on the water.

Ivo van Hulten, a leading product designer with years of experience in the automotive industry in Germany, has used his wealth of experience to design the model with impressive lines and proportions, including a wraparound screen and extended bow:

“I wanted to capture that innovation, but also connect it with something timeless, so that it’s not just futuristic but also has the feeling of a really classic boat,” describes Ivo van Hulten, the 8S’s designer. “Then, with the rear winglet extended, it has something like a bullet or airplane shape. So it looks premium and classic, but it’s really fast!

Groothuis and Van Hardenbroek’s major aim is sustainability. The duo plan to transform the industry by promoting a more sustainable concept of luxury, whilst simultaneously presenting users with peak performance and stunning design features. They are backed by a major investment from Steven Schuurman, the renowned philanthropist and technology and media entrepreneur.

Steven Schuurman, main investor:

I was instantly convinced, particularly by Giel and Godert’s unique clarity of vision. It’s rare to have the chance to contribute to such a strong product. It’s even rarer to be part of something with so much potential. The beauty of the Edorado is that it will lead the way, pioneering innovations that can eventually trickle down into the wider industry. And providing an unforgettable ride along the way!”

Giel Groothuis, co-founder and CEO:

What is considered innovation in the boating industry just doesn’t cut it any more in the current reality of the climate crisis. What is needed is a rapid transition to zero emissions, also for the leisure industry. After owning petrol-fuelled boats I realised that a complete overhaul of this product category is long overdue. The traditional boating industry is just waiting to be disrupted by a clean-tech approach. Our goal with the Edorado 8S is to chart a course for clean powerboating.”
