Here’s why you need to register for the MYBA Pop-up Superyacht Show in Montenegro

September will play host to the third MYBA Pop-Up Superyacht show at Porto Montenegro in the Bay of Kotor. The timing may seem a little odd to some as it is right at the end of the Mediterranean season, however, what it actually provides is a unique opportunity. Why? Brokers and superyachts are able to unite in the beautiful Adriatic for the region’s largest event of its kind. It’s a pleasant departure from the traditional cruising areas and takes place in an environment that will allow them to forge meaningful relationships and make the most of the end of the charter season. From the show’s strategic location at one of the most beautiful superyacht marinas in the world to its favourable tax and legislation policies, it puts a spotlight on the incredible charter opportunities still available at a time when many yachts are heading towards shipyard work or preparing for a crossing.

No one doubts that the Adriatic has seen tremendous growth in the last 10 years with an estimated 400 yachts over 30 meters cruising from Venice to Croatia, to Montenegro and beyond. The area is getting noticed for its miles of unspoilt coastlines and a sense of genuine old world culture. Porto Montenegro has been leading the charge in establishing the region as a premier superyacht destination with undoubtedly one of the most impressive marinas in the Med. There is no other region we can think of that has been as heavily involved as Montenegro in creating yacht friendly legislation in the Adriatic. This is helping to increase yacht visits to the area and charter opportunities, and Porto Montenegro has been at the helm.

Here’s why the MYBA Pop-Up Superyacht Show should be on your radar

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Mar 25, 2016 at 2:04am PDT

As the cruising season continues to extend later into the Autumn each year (to the delight of brokers, marinas and yacht agents) where better to get a sneak peak at vessels still available for a late summer charters than Montenegro? Situated in the southern part of the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro is perfectly placed for cruising the Dalmatian coast, Italy and Greece, with close access to over 4000 unspoilt islands.

The region has established itself as a world-famous destination for the superyacht industry by providing favourable tax benefits and flexible cruising regulations. The ability for foreign yachts to remain in the Montenegrin waters with no restrictions on picking up or dropping off guests, or with any limitations on the length of stay, have made this a perfect location to start or end a charter. Duty-free fuel, zero percent VAT on charters as well as tax-free status for many goods has contributed to the increase in visiting yachts in the area.

The beautiful Bay of Kotor

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Jun 11, 2017 at 4:01am PDT

If you haven’t seen it then you’re missing out! The Bay of Kotor is where Porto Montenegro calls home. Montenegro may be one of Europe’s smallest countries, but it has everything you could want from a premier yacht destination; from exceptional cruising and culture to outstanding cuisine. The marina offers an impressive 450 berths for vessels from 12 to 250 meters but is expanding rapidly. Upon completion there will be an impressive 850 berths, with 350 of them dedicated to superyachts of 24m or more, making it the perfect home for the world’s largest superyachts.

It’s a show that has something for everyone

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Nov 10, 2016 at 6:52am PST

The biggest event of its kind in the region, the show that takes place from September 8th to the 10th, and is open to all commercially registered yachts larger than 20 meters (with some restrictions on yachts older than 4 years). All yachts are pre-approved by MYBA and Porto Montenegro and are represented by MYBA members or YACHTFOLIO. Those who have attended the MYBA Charter Show in the last 2 years will receive automatic approval. From the look of vessels which participated in the previous two years, from the majestic joyMe to the family-friendly Ladyship; and speciality vessels outfitted for the adventurous and loaded with toys and diving equipment- this is the only event in the region to see yachts available for charter in the region.

Quality time onboard

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Nov 5, 2016 at 9:19am PDT

Smaller, with more of a boutique feel than other shows around the Med, the MYBA pop-up superyacht show showcases a high quality of vessels, brokers and exhibitors, many of whom appreciate the opportunity spend quality time in the marina and getting to know the captains and crew, who are so essential to a great charter experience. Over the three day event, international brokers are able to view yachts, participate in industry seminars and of course the yacht hops with the opportunity to explore the region through a number of selected familiarisation excursions.

Registration is now open!

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Sep 29, 2016 at 9:54am PDT

If you’re a yacht owner or charter manager you should get your booking completed by August 3rd. However, should a charter subsequently be arranged during the period of the show following the vessel’s registration, a full refund will be offered to ensure that no potential charter opportunities are missed. For brokers and visitors, the show offers an opportunity for a first-hand look at this new elite yachting destination, and one that is becoming a point of reference for yacht cruising in the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean. Over the past few years attendance has grown tremendously- with 60% growth last year and an equally anticipated increase this year.

How to get there

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Apr 18, 2015 at 5:06am PDT

Porto Montenegro has just announced nine new direct routes to Tivat Airport, just a 10-minute drive from the marina, for the upcoming summer season making it easier than ever to get to Montenegro this summer and to the show. Direct flights and easy connections are available from all over Europe with a number of newer destinations further afield in the Middle East.

Here’s why Montenegro is the gateway to yachting paradise

The Adriatic Sea has remained a place firmly planted in history for trade, transportation and recreation with coastlines ruled by the Ostrogoths, Lombards, and the Byzantine Empire.

Right in the heart of the Adriatic, offering easy access to Croatia and Venice in the North or Albania and Greece to the South, is Montenegro. If you know this small jewel of a country, it will come as no surprise to learn that Condé Nast Traveler named it as one of 2017’s emerging destinations. The yacht set in particular, has quickly recognised the importance of Montenegro and its relaxed, welcoming approach to yachting (certainly compared to its neighbours that still exercise strict charter regulations and licenses).

This is no better exemplified than Montenegro’s only superyacht marina, Porto Montenegro, which is also the only marina in the world awarded Platinum status by The Yacht Harbour Association – and for good reason.

If you’re planning on visiting the Adriatic, Montenegro should be a key feature of your itinerary – for guests and crew alike. Breathtakingly beautiful and full of charm, Montenegro is the ideal getaway if you’re seeking a yacht charter itinerary that offers diverse scenery, interesting culture, amazing cuisine and unique experiences with Adriatic authenticity. Here, we outline some of the important and perhaps lesser known qualities when planning your visit.

Refined luxury at Porto Montenegro

Porto Montenegro is the crowning glory of the Adriatic charter destinations and deserves to be on all Balkan charter itineraries, with easy accessibility via Tivat Airport that is on the doorstep and Podgorica and Dubrovnik also within driving distance.

Crucially, foreign vessels have the ability to remain in Montenegrin waters with no limit on time, meaning Porto Montenegro is a dynamic gateway to many activities and experiences that offer seclusion and the serenity you need to escape the daily grind.

Porto Montenegro has redefined the term ‘destination marina’; as well as excellent restaurants, lively bars, day spa and beach club you’ll find a maritime museum and superb shopping with premium global brands such as Dior, Cartier and Gucci. Charter sightseeing options nearby are vast from hiking up the fortification walls at Kotor, strolling around Perast to kayaking in the clear water at Dobra Luka.

Start ticking off all the boxes as the benefits for visiting this full-service marina are impressive – spectacular Bay of Kotor views, 0% VAT on charters, tax and duty-free fuel, tax-free wine and spirits, 7% VAT on marine related services plus economically attractive investment opportunities for crew, guests and owners.

Porto Montenegro’s yacht-friendly legislation and cost saving for yachts means a long-term lease is instantly appealing. The deal is made even sweeter with an exceptional offer* that includes 2 nights accommodation at the 5-star Regent Porto Montenegro Hotel, VIP transfers from select airports nearby, a guided tour of the marina facilities, wine tasting and more (*conditions apply) so you can experience the heart of Montenegrin hospitality from the outset, find out more here.

Continuing on your Montenegrin yacht charter, don’t miss sampling the nightlife at Budva, admiring the picturesque setting at Sveti Stefan or exploring the historic sites in Bar. Ulcinj, the southernmost town near Albania is worth visiting for its beaches, diving and interestingly, flamingos. In cooler months, Montenegro is a hive of activity with snowmobiling, skiing and heli-sightseeing all possible.

Adriatic beach life

Far from the hedonist beach clubs of Ibiza or monotony of St Tropez, the beaches of Albania sprawl out from where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas collide and are true hidden gems.

Gjipe Beach in Albania

Just 150 nautical miles south from Montenegro, you can be surrounded by clear turquoise water and some of the most picturesque beaches that you’ll think you’re in the Caribbean – without the price tag to match. For Instagram-worthy beaches, cruise to Gjipe Beach, Bunec or Kakome Beach. If you’re looking for a mix of beach life and culture, Ksamil near Saranda has fantastic beaches and is part of the Butrint National Park which has important ancient ruins and a biodiverse lake.

A slice of heaven in Corfu

Easily included in an Adriatic yacht charter starting or finishing in Montenegro, Corfu is the original matriarch of Greek islands. Head ashore for a wander around Corfu Old Town that is UNESCO World Heritage-listed and step back in time seeing the ancient fortifications with Sicilian and Venetian influence. Achingly pretty, the old town rivals Portofino for colourful waterside buildings.

Further inland, there are some magnificent Byzantine archaeological sites or simply anchor near one of the many fantastic beaches such as Mirtiotissa for a relaxed snapshot of Greek life.

Discovering coastal charm

The western Adriatic doesn’t hold all the appeal of this region; beautiful towns across the Strait of Otranto line the coast of Puglia and are a wonderful stopover on the way to or from Montenegro. The best time to explore is in the off-season when day trippers have long left their summer boltholes.

Ostuni in Puglia

Ostuni sits atop a hill overlooking the sea with white-washed houses and is a quaint town to explore with narrow medieval alleyways. Further south, Otranto has ancient fortifications, a pleasant beach and is popular for the Capo d’Otranto lighthouse. There are also great seafood restaurants and because Puglia is famous for its olive oil production don’t miss going ashore for a meal of fresh fish, Italian bread and warm olive oil.

When you visit Porto Montenegro, you’ll understand why the Adriatic has more to discover than meets the eye.

7 Great Things To Do In Montenegro In 2018

Visiting a country so scenically diverse as Montenegro in any season leaves most visitors wanting for more and it’s not surprising given the idyllic old-walled towns, stunning nature and rich history.

The world’s most popular travel destinations are scooping up accolades for their experiential travel experiences and Montenegro wants a piece of the jetsetter pie. It may be a small country, but there’s a reason why it’s reputation is growing. As an all-year destination, Montenegro is a great place to visit for any traveller and there are plenty of ways to outsmart the tourist crowds.

1. Enjoy A Luxury Winter Getaway

With direct flights in winter to Tivat, Podgorica and Dubrovnik airports, visiting Montenegro in the cooler months provides a unique perspective on a fascinating region. The Regent Porto Montenegro is a sublime place to experience a decadent getaway with a premium Winter Escape Package offering luxury accommodation paired with discounts for designer shopping, food and beverage and indulgent treatments at the Regent Spa.

2. Explore Montenegro’s Great Outdoors

Biogradska Gora National Park | Image credit: lonelyplanet.com

Home to the Balkan’s most pristine wilderness areas, Montenegro boasts a kaleidoscope of natural attractions including vast gorges, turquoise lakes, mountain plateaus and forestlands. Nature lovers can discover a wide variety of wildlife such as boar, bears, deer or rare southern Dalmatian pelicans. Visiting during spring is particularly special when the meadows are vibrant with wild orchids and the temperatures are pleasant. Don’t miss Biogradska Gora National Park with mesmerising lake and mountain views; it’s a wonderful spot to switch off and rejuvenate. Families will enjoy Lipa Cave close to Cetinje, a karst cave network with 2.5 kilometres of passageways. After dark, head outdoors at Lovćen for a stargazing session minus light pollution.

3. Wander The Medieval Towns Without The Tourist Crowds

Kotor | Image credit: earthtrekkers.com

Want to visit all the popular towns but hate crowds? Well, Montenegro lets you have your cake and eat it because the quiet season is the quintessential time to visit. The country’s long history is reflected in beautiful cathedrals, historic ramparts and Baroque architecture. Built on the foundations of the Venetian period, in UNESCO-listed Kotor, you’ll find walled fortifications intertwined with bougainvillaea-fringed alleyways and Romanesque churches. Perast is worth exploring to soak up the beauty of the palaces and churches looking out to the tiny island, Our Lady of the Rocks.

4. Stay And Sail

Montenegro has a lengthy maritime history and one of the best ways to appreciate the country’s charms is from the sea. Suitable for all levels of experience, Porto Montenegro Yacht Club will guide you on a range of RYA certified sailing courses for durations of 2 to 5 days giving you the ultimate chance to try your hand at sailing the picturesque Boka Bay.

5. Join In The Fun At Montenegrin Carnivals

Remember to pack your sense of fun and excitement when you come to here because there are a number of annual festivals that show off Montenegrin music, culture and history. February welcomes the Kotor Carnival, one of the best carnivals in Montenegro with a costumed parade, masks and celebrations in town squares as well as a Mimosa Festival in Herceg Novi. For something a bit different, in July the Prokletije Mountains which boasts the world’s largest cover of naturally growing wild blueberries hosts a lip-smackingly juicy Days of Blueberries festival in Plav. Summertime sees locals and visitors participate in the International Summer Carnival, a street party in Kotor where you can see how Montenegrin festivals really get the community behind them.

6. Thrill-Seeking Adventure Sports

Montenegro is the Aston Martin of Adriatic landscapes with epic mountain, river, forest and fjord-like scenery. If you have a spark for an adventurous lifestyle, there is something for everyone to escape the chaos of big cities in all seasons. Go mountain biking in Durmitor National Park or along the Vrmac Ridge separating Tivat and Kotor, join a rafting trip down the Tara River or venture to Trnovačko Lake in the north for hiking. Snow hounds can head a few hours north of Porto Montenegro for skiing in Kolašin, where an 18-person ski chalet is completely free of charge for crew to use in winter – an amazing offer to have fun on the slopes, enjoy the late-night bars and eat at authentic Montenegrin restaurants!

7. Discover Montenegro’s Cuisine

Seafood Buzara | Image credit: theculturetrip.com

One of the best ways to experience the culture of a country is by enjoying delicious culinary creations. From the simple yet divine seafood buzara to dry-cured ham from Njeguši and grilled lamb or fish, you’ll be amazed at the traditions and reasons why Montenegro is becoming a foodie destination. The fruits of nature are no more evident than the organic food producers and vineyards spreading around Lake Skadar and you’ll be fully satisfied by a glass of rakija designed to warm your bones. This little country will certainly change your perspective on gastronomy and balance out the good life with the best of what’s in season.

Whether you want to catch the last of the winter sun or are thinking about next summer, Montenegro will leave a lasting impression with a range of extraordinary experiences all year-round.

Take A look At The 2022 Porto Montenegro X ACREW Crew Awards Winners

ACREW Announces The Official Porto Montenegro X ACREW Crew Awards Winners

Hosted in Porto Montenegro on the 14th – 16th October 2022

About The Crew Awards

ACREW announced the results of the prestigious ‘Crew Awards 2022’, which took place in the world-renowned marina and luxury lifestyle destination of Porto Montenegro on 14th – 16th October 2022.  The official winners include ROMA for Best Charter Yacht, EOS for Best Private Yacht, and Kelly Gordon, Sean Read and Sebastian Gerards as the Best Captain Masters (of 500GT, 3000GT and Unlimited respectively), among a number of other prestigious award wins.

This year, they celebrated the 5th Edition of The Crew Awards with hundreds of crew and businesses in attendance. Superyacht captains, crew, the award nominees, and finalists were invited to attend a weekend full of activities in the Mediterranean’s luxury marina village. The theme was ‘A Knight to Remember’, giving those in attendance an evening to be treated like royalty, as they so deserve.

Tony Browne, Marina Director at Porto Montenegro, comments:

The yachting industry is built on a foundation of hard work behind the scenes. We are immensely grateful to our friends and partners at ACREW, for celebrating all levels of experience, giving captains and crew the visibility and credit that they deserve within the industry.

Tony continues:

We were thrilled to host the Crew Awards here in Porto Montenegro for the first time in 2022. Both the marina services and the lifestyle amenities here are designed to create an exceptional experience, not only for owners and charter passengers, but for crew. As we take the time to recognise crew and their achievements, it feels only right that we host them here in Porto Montenegro, and show them a good time.”

After a three-year partnership with ACREW, the awards took place in Porto Montenegro, the world’s first platinum-status marina, located on the UNESCO protected Bay of Kotor. Last year, Porto Montenegro was one of the official Gold Sponsor of ACREW and presented with the prestigious award of ‘World Best Superyacht Marina,’ following their win of ACREW’s ‘Adriatic’s Best Superyacht Marina’ in 2020.

Onno Ebens, Managing Director at ACREW, comments:

“We are delighted to have hosted this year’s Crew Awards in Porto Montenegro. Nurturing, supporting and celebrating crew – and all those who contribute to our industry – is our passion, and we are proud to recognise 20 important categories.

“The diversity of the winners this year, reflects the many different elements that make up the yachting industry; a reminder that each and every individual is integral to maintaining the high standards that yachting is known for.

“Porto Montenegro was a fitting setting for our Knight to Remember, offering adventure and luxury to all those who travelled to experience the awards.

The evening could not have gone ahead without Porto Montenegro, and our generous sponsors – but most importantly, I’d like to thank the ACREW community, who played the biggest role of all.”

What’s in my suitcase? 5 things to bring to Montenegro

Set your GPS to Porto Montenegro, one of the newest superyacht hotspots in the Mediterranean, for the MYBA Pop-up Superyacht Show from September 8th to the 10th. From its outstanding natural beauty to its yacht-friendly tax and legislation policies, it’s a well-known fact now that the area has been rapidly developing its infrastructure and the yachting industry has been taking notice. Can there be a better spot, far from the traditional “milk run”, to mingle with international charter brokers, to see some of the hottest charter yachts on the market, and to learn more about this beautiful region?

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Nov 5, 2016 at 9:19am PDT

From the majesty of the mountains, the mystery of the ice caves, and the magic of the islands of Montenegro, this is a stellar and diverse cruising destination. From here set your compass any which way and you’ll head into heaven: The Dalmatian coast, Croatia, Italy, Greece, and a fabulous 4000 islands to find and forage.

The MYBA Pop-up Superyacht Show in Porto Montenegro is located in the heart of the Bay of Kotor, rich with activities for both the adventurous and those looking to get away from it all. There is no better way to explore this area than from aboard a luxury yacht for a weeklong charter. You can zip line across it, ski down it, dive to its depths, and hike 3,000 kilometres of its ancient pathways and trails all in one day. Gorge yourself in blueberry fields (if no-one’s looking of course) and have a traditional kick-start to your day (yes for breakfast!) with the ‘multifunctional’ local liqueur made from quince, cherry, apple, pear, grape or prune rakija.

Intrigued? First, register for the show. (And no you don’t need to wait… the registration fee is uber-yacht friendly and fully refundable should you book at last minute charter for that week!) Second, get ready to be amazed. And third, pack a few strategic items so your guests can experience all this area has to offer. Here’s what we think you’ll need!

A ROCK

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Apr 6, 2017 at 9:56am PDT

Picture Montenegro and in your mind’s eye you will see the Bay of Kotor, the UNESCO towns of Perast and Kotor, and the island of ‘Our Lady of the Rocks’. This man-made islet was the brainchild of two tired sailors (c1452) who spotted a Madonna and Child in the shallows of the Bay and decided to build a sanctuary of thanks for their safe return. They dropped stones around the spot where the icon was found and slowly created an islet where they built a small chapel. Traditionally, sailors drop rocks in the water around the chapel before a voyage to contribute to the strength of its foundations and to ask the Virgin Mother to bring them safely home. So, have a few at the ready for your guests to toss in as a little extra insurance that your week will be spectacular!

A BIKE

A post shared by Montenato – Жизнь в Монтенегро (@montenato) on Jul 9, 2017 at 10:40am PDT

This is the perfect way for charter guests to visit the sixteen palaces and nineteen churches of the quaint town of Perast, a little slice of Venice that floated down the Adriatic and anchored itself to the Bay of Kotor. It’s ‘gone green’ thanks to funding from the Italian Government, so pedal yer’ bike or Segway through it. And don’t worry about the guests getting lost. Incredibly, this tiny town has only one main street!

AN OXYGEN TANK

A post shared by letsgotomontenegro (@letsgotomontenegro) on Feb 22, 2017 at 12:12am PST

For the adventurous, exploring the wrecks beneath the waves will be a highlight for a charter exploring the mysteries of the ancient world. If they fancy a more modern dive, guide them towards the Patrol Ship PBR 512 (intentionally sunk for rocket practice in 1983), the WW1 Austro-Hungarian Destroyer Zenta, the WW1 Bouclier Class French Destroyer Dague, (she struck a mine in 1915) and a WW2 Airplane Wreck (a mystery, discovered in 2008). There are also a number of cave diving spots and fantastic reefs that will keep diving enthusiasts busy for days.

YOUR DANCING SHOES

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Aug 2, 2016 at 9:54am PDT

Happy feet on board? Step off the boat and walk over to Platinum, one of the hottest nightclubs in the area to dance ‘till the wee hours of the morning. And it’ll be the shortest transfer back to the yacht you’ll ever have to organise since the club is located inside Porto Montenegro. Or venture a little further out to Budva where cool breezes and free flowing cocktails will keep revellers refreshed at the Tophill Club. Aptly named, it is one of the most spectacular open-air nightclubs, on a hill of course, in the Med.

A KITE

Ada Bojana is a small island formed at the tip of the Bojana River and the Adriatic Sea, and it’s the southernmost point of Montenegro. Its three-kilometre sandy beach creates the perfect spot to bring your guests for a day of kite flying or windsurfing with beautiful walks along the shore for those who want a bit of land-based relaxation. Lunch at Kod Miska for fantastic seafood is a must and then sail from the restaurant to the delta of the Bojana River and the Adriatic Sea. Swim in the clear, turquoise waters off the coast to finish off the day!

The 2017 MYBA Pop-Up Superyacht Show at Porto Montenegro is an exceptional opportunity to explore all that this region has to offer and this is just a small taste of what your guests can experience here.
