Azzam has held the top spot for longest yacht in the world since her delivery in 2013 by Lürssen. Azzam’s exterior lines were penned by Nauta Design. She was originally planned to be 145 meters long but as the project grew so did the length due to getting all the working parts needed of a vessel of this volume while staying within the design brief of the long bow and swept back stern. She has a top speed of 33knots delivered by two gas turbine engines and 2 x MTU diesel engines producing a staggering 97,000hp and consuming 13 tonnes of fuel per hour at top speed.

Sailing yacht A was built by Nobiskrug and delivered to her owner in 2017. Technically a sail assisted motor yacht she still ranks as the largest sail yacht in the world by nearly 40 meters. Her three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world. The mainmast towers 100 m above the waterline and she also has an underwater observation pod in the hull as well as her nearly invisible windows which give her a futuristic look. The legendary Philippe Starck created this unconventional design and she still continues to split opinions in and out of the industry to this day.

Rowing for a Cleaner Ocean – M/Y Pi

The crew of M/Y Pi is nearing the end of their 3 week rowing for a cleaner ocean challenge. Here at Superyacht Content we want to take a look back at what they have achieved. We would like to ask for assistance helping them reach their €25,000 target. All to raise money and awareness for The Ocean Cleanup Initiative.

A post shared by M/Y PI (@pi_rowing_for_a_cleaner_ocean_)

The Goal

Their aim was to row continuously for 12 hours each day. All for the duration of the 3-week crossing from Amsterdam, Netherlands to the Panama Canal. As you can see from the shot below they have rowed a combined 2.95 million meters. That’s an average of 9500 meters per workout (which i’m pretty sure is more than I have done in a lifetime). Read their mission statement below.

“We are duty-bound as seafarers to respect the oceans as we earn our living travelling across the seven seas. With our combined experience of travelling over the whole globe over the course of many years, we have seen the effect of plastic pollution first hand. Having once experienced pristine environments full of marine life, it is demoralising and heart-breaking to see how much these remote places have been destroyed in recent years by plastic pollution.”

They are still welcoming all donations on their Go Fund Me page and if you cant donate use the buttons on the right to share their story.

Make sure to follow them on Instagram for loads of story updates and great pictures.

Damen Yachting Sells Custom 72M Hybrid Expedition Vessel

The team at Amels and Damen Yachting has signed a new 72-metre (236 ft) full custom project to be built under its Damen Yachting brand. When delivered in early 2024, the vessel will explore the world with a hugely capable platform featuring hybrid propulsion for zero-emission cruising and accommodation for 12 guests. Read on to find out more.

Who’s Working On The Superyacht?

The Owner, having an exceptional interest and aptitude for both exterior and interior yacht design, has selected professional designer Michael Leach Design to enhance the vessel’s exterior styling along with the Owner’s interior. Damen Yachting’s in-house team has developed the one-off custom naval architecture and detailed engineering. Burgess New Construction has been appointed to project manage the build, after the sales team represented the Owner during the purchase process.

Managing Director Rose Damen:

“This hybrid expedition vessel is an absolutely unique project. For us it has been very exciting to bring the Owner’s very unique vision to reality. We are dedicated to developing more efficient propulsion and power management solutions for our clients, which are underpinned by an environmentally sensitive mind-set. We are proud to be at the forefront of a new breed of luxury expedition vessels and this highly innovative new project embodies this approach.’’

Superyacht Project Aquamarine

Features

The vessel is characterised by large and flexible outdoor spaces that can be used for both sun and shade as well as tender and toy storage. The deck can also accommodate modular equipment including a deck swimming pool and a removable battery bank. With a Gross Tonnage of 1,440, the spacious interior features a dedicated Owners Deck, a VIP cabin and generous areas for guest entertainment. A Touch & Go Helipad allows for convenient access.

Full service will be provided by up to 24 crew, including staff and specialists. The powerful deck crane will deploy equipment up to 14 tonnes including a 13-metre fast RIB, a 9-metre utility craft and a car.

Efficient Power

The rugged ocean-going vessel will be powered by a highly efficient power and propulsion configuration. In addition to the two main engines, she will have PTO/PTI hybrid electrical drives that are suitable for running up to 8 knots. She will have significant on-board battery power for normal use including silent nights at anchor without generator power. The stored power can be increased with containerised battery packs for extended zero-emission silent cruising in fragile marine systems. All outdoor spaces will be finished in synthetic teak decking as a more sustainable, durable and low maintenance alternative.

A Big Year at Heesen Yachts

Heesen Yachts are looking forward to a big year. Check out what they have in store for us.

They will deliver no fewer than six superyachts in 2021. With a total length of 315 metres and an even more impressive combined volume of 3,816 Gross Tons. They currently have 14 yachts currently under construction, with deliveries taking them through 2024. These include both semi-custom and full-custom yachts, from 50 to 80 metres in length. Below we have picked 4 of their exciting current projects.

Project Aquamarine

The imminent launch of YN 18950 Project Aquamarine, the first in the new 5000 Aluminium Class, will mark the start of a busy year. Possessing a narrow, curved and sporty superstructure, Aquamarine is a 50m fast-cruising aluminium semi-displacement yacht. With crisp design language and enviable appeal. Also equipped with MTU’s new green oceanic engines with reduced NOx emissions. Aquamarine is the first fast-cruising yacht below 500GT to be IMO Tier III compliant.

Superyacht Project Aquamarine

Project SkyFall

The 60-metre Project SkyFall, is a 60m all-aluminium, full-custom motoryacht. She is set for delivery in spring 2023. Her thunder will come from 22,000 horsepower. This extraordinary power will feed four water jets that will drive her at 37 knots in light load conditions. An impressive feat, particularly when considering her significant 900GT volume. She is the most powerful project Heesen has created to date.  SkyFall exudes power and speed in every single detail. The exterior design includes a fishing cockpit located at the stern for her Owner, who is a keen angler.

Superyacht Project Skyfall

Project Sparta

67-metre Project Sparta is taking shape. We will see her hull and superstructure joined in the autumn. At 67 metres and with an internal volume of approximately 1,200 Gross Tons, Project Sparta is the largest steel-hulled displacement motor yacht built by Heesen to date. Her ultra-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form is an iteration of the patented design by van Oossanen. This is complimented above the waterline by a dynamic profile from the drawing board of Winch Design. Powered by two MTU 12V4000 M65R diesel engines, she will reach a top speed of 16 knots. She has a transatlantic cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Superyacht Project Sparta

Project Cosmos

November will see the launch of the mighty 80-metre Project Cosmos. With exterior lines by Winch Design, and interiors by Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design. Project Cosmos will carry on the theme of Heesen’s flagship having a space related name. At 1,700 Gross Tons and with a top speed of 29 knots, Project Cosmos will be the world’s largest and fastest full-aluminium Superyacht with  a conventional propeller propulsion system.

Superyacht Project Cosmos

All this in 2021 will be down to Heesen’s 500 employees and their additional, 500-strong flexible workforce. Thanks to the resilience, commitment and passion of Heesen’s women and men, who adapted to new ways of working imposed by the pandemic.

Amels Deliver SYNTHESIS to kick off 2021

While we are all busy on Monday waking up for the first work day of the year the team at Amels and Damen Yachting has marked the start of 2021 with the delivery of the Amels 242 SYNTHESIS.

The 74-metre Amels Limited Editions design (242 ft), which features a number of layout customisations, departed the Damen Yachting Vlissingen City shipyard in the Netherlands on January 4th. Her planned itinerary is based around an extensive cruising schedule which will take the superyacht worldwide.

SYNTHESIS stems from the successful Amels 242 Limited Editions range. Her experienced Owner is a repeat Amels client and has customised this yacht to meet their personal requirements. She features a dedicated Owners Deck with foredeck jacuzzi and there is a significant focus on blending the interior into the exterior throughout with unique dining and entertaining layouts on multiple decks which move away from the more traditional configurations. There is a large aft deck swimming pool and the Lower Deck Wellness Spa continues this play on the indoor-outdoor with direct access to the swim platform for guests.

Damen Yachting Managing Director Rose Damen says, “It has been a wonderful experience to welcome back our client and to see them incorporate so many personal touches to his Amels 242. It is a fantastic example of what our Limited Editions concept is all about. Owners being able to benefit from the existing and proven platform whilst still having the freedom to customise to meet their own specific yachting needs and still receive delivery within 12 months.”

With a Gross Tonnage of 1,790, SYNTHESIS accommodates 12 guests in 6 cabins with 19 crew. The yacht’s garage holds two 9-metre luxury tenders and the Bridge Deck aft features a helipad. As with all Amels Limited Editions, SYNTHESIS benefits from the proven naval architecture by Damen Yachting. Her exterior bears the unmistakable signature of Tim Heywood and she features bespoke interiors by Winch Design. International yacht brokerage specialists Torrance Yachts advised the client and managed the build on his behalf.

SYNTHESIS is the fifth Amels 242 to be delivered and also marks the 40th Limited Editions yacht to be delivered since 2005. Damen Yachting’s innovative business model of upfront investment in engineering and construction, while maximising customisation and evolution, represents the perfect balance between full custom and semi-custom and reduces delivery time from several years to as little as a few months.

Top 5 Superyachts of 2020

Superyacht Content’s Top 5 of 2020

Let’s be honest 2020 has not been the best year. Added to the lack of a Monaco Yacht show it’s been a bit grim. But let’s try to look on the bright side as we review our top 5 Superyachts launched in 2020.

La Datcha, 77 Meters, Built by Damen Yachting

Photo: Damen Yachting[/caption]

One of the most anticipated yachts of 2020, La Datcha, the first SeaXplorer 77 from Damen Yachting. We love her rugged looks and fact she has not one, but 2 helicopters with the hanger space for both. Also on board is a custom painted Triton Submersible, jet skis and snowmobiles. All that plus the Ice class certification means she is good for exploring in the high latitudes or making your way through the pacific islands.

Nord, 142 Meters, Built by Lurssen

Photo: Superyacht Times

Just Wow…. was the first thing that sprang to mind when I first saw this yacht. The scale and presence is unbelievable. Room for 36 guests in 20 cabins with all design all round by Nuvolari Lenard. She has a large swimming pool on the main deck, a diving centre, 2 helipads and retractable hanger to keep the chopper warm at night. She also has some pretty fancy exterior lighting effects which hopefully we will get to see some more of.

Soaring, 68 Meters, Abeking & Rasmussen

Photo: Tom Van Oossanen for Abeking & Rasmussen

Another great build by Abeking & Rasmussen with design by Focus Yacht Design. She looks a lot smaller than her 68 meters but that only adds to the great look of this yacht. It’s your pretty standard 12 guests in 6 cabins with an owners suite on upper deck aft, Tender garages up forward and nice sized beach club aft with gym, steam room, spa and access to all the water toys at the swim platform.

Totally Nuts, 49.65 Meters,  Feadship

Photo: Tom Van Oossanen

Well I had to put this in if only for the name, but just look at it… Take note people “your yacht doesn’t need to be 500 meters long to be cool”. Mooted to be the fastest Feadship built thanks to her Wartsila Jet Propulsion system, with speeds of up to 48 knots+ being touted but wont be confirmed until after sea trial data has been made public. Designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design and isn’t she a little beauty!

Ragnar, 68 Meters, Icon Yachts

Photo: Burgess

This yacht is a beast. At only 68 meters she is the same length as Soaring that we looked at earlier. But with a 14 meter beam and the 6 decks this is one imposing vessel. Classed as a true Icebreaker this really is a go anywhere yacht. Pictured here during her maiden voyage in Greenland we expect this yacht to spend a lot of time in the high latitudes. Available for charter with Burgess she has room for 12 guests along with 4 tenders, 4 jet skis, 4 Snow Mobiles and what can only be described as a tank (see below) which by the way also floats and propels itself in the water using its tyres.

Photo: Burgess

Converted from an Ice breaking supply ship by Icon yachts in a little over 2 years this yacht will get you where you need to go and in the comfort and style you would expect from a superyacht.

Well that’s our 5 for 2020. Do you have a different top 5? If so send it to editor@superyachtcontent.com and we may publish yours.
