AYSS Yacht Agents were the kings & queens of this year’s #MYBACharterShow

AYSS superyacht agents were out in force at the MYBA Charter Show at OneOcean Port Vell in Barcelona last week providing invaluable, first-hand guidance to captains and charter brokers for the 2017 Med Charter Season. Superyacht Agents have supported the MYBA Charter Show for many years, as the event offers a key opportunity to meet with the industry and provide brokers with expert local guidance on the best cruising itineraries, bespoke excursions, provisioning and dockage options at their disposal for the upcoming season.

Fiona Maureso, MYBA President, commented “We are delighted with the strong support that agents, from all over the globe, expressed for the 2017 MYBA Charter Show. We would like to thank our loyal and long term friends who were there, as well as all the new entries who joined us. They are vital to a successful charter and we look forward to welcoming them back next year.”

AYSS agents also took a leading role in sponsoring the various aspects of the event. We spoke to Stefano Tositti, CEO of BWA Yachting about their role as official show sponsor.

“This was a record breaking show in terms of the number of exhibitors, and BWA Yachting could not have been more proud to be the official show sponsors. OneOcean Port Vell and MYBA really delivered something outstanding, and we are very proud to have played a part of it. Many exhibitors have said it was the best yacht show they have attended in the past years.”

Pierre Balzan, the Director of the Melita Marine Group in Malta told us, “We have been supporting the MYBA show for the past 24 years as an exhibitor. The show has always been good for us and we will continue to be present at the show for years to come.”

Dr. Alessandro Sartore, Owner of All Services in Italy commented, “OneOcean Port Vell and her facilities look to be ideal for holding this important annual event. I really appreciated the capacious space dedicated to the vessels, the cleanliness of the whole area, the superb security and the whole team that assisted us.”

A superyacht captain’s son is fighting to represent Antigua for Kitesurfing at the Olympics

It’s a well-known fact that every yachtie has, at one time or another, harboured aspirations of taking to the water by kite. A popular weekend activity both in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, kitesurfing is a growing watersports phenomenon which has grown to typify ocean-cool. Its stars are folk heroes among the relatively small but global community of practitioners of the sport, and those who strap themselves into a harness and speed out to sea at the mercy of wind and waves are undoubtedly the type of thrill seekers some of us can only dream to be.

A post shared by Sc:tigertyson3 (@tigerkiting) on Apr 23, 2017 at 5:39am PDT

Many of you will have travelled to Antigua, a nation inside the ‘Leeward’ Island chain which forms the larger part of the Northern Carribean territories. It’s important to note here the definition of the word Leeward itself meaning ‘towards the wind’, as the conditions on the Atlantic side of these islands are just about as good as it gets for just about any sport which involves making use of wind and water to generate raw speed.

It is here in Antigua that Tiger Tyson, a kitesurfing protege and Olympic hopeful, first took to the water under the guidance of his father Mick – relief captain at the time of iconic superyacht Leander G. Their early sessions together at the legendary Antiguan kitesurfing destination Green Island would form the basis of a deep passion for both father and son and a hunger to do more.

“I was seven years old when I was first introduced to the sport, and I fell in love with it instantly,” Tiger explains to us, currently training hard back home in Antigua. “I loved the fact that I was the youngest kiter out there. Every day after school and every weekend my dad and I would go out kiting together, we couldn’t get enough of it. It was just a matter of time before I got my own gear and was independent. I loved the look on peoples faces when they saw a little boy ripping up and down the bay!”

A post shared by Sc:tigertyson3 (@tigerkiting) on Apr 1, 2017 at 8:36am PDT

Having impressed many of the local pros with the speed of his skill development on a board, Tiger Tyson’s fanbase grew and soon his father began to wonder if he could be ready to compete.

“I was trained in freestyle by ex-world champion Andre Phillips (Dre) who was born and raised on the small island of Antigua. Dre got me up to a high standard of freestyle, and at that point, it had just been announced that kitesurfing was going to be the next new Olympic sport. This, of course, got me super excited- the only problem was that I would have to compete in racing. At the age of 13 I changed my focus from freestyle to speed. Straight away I learnt how to foil because nowadays anything that moves on water is faster with a hydrofoil on it, and that is the future of competition in kitesurfing.”

As the sport is so new, the landscape is constantly changing on the competitive scene, and it was only recently that the International Olympic Committee decided to begin talks about including kitesurfing in the games at all. The sport hasn’t been confirmed to be taking place in the official 2020 Tokyo Olympics yet, but will definitely be a showcase event (which means it isn’t for a medal). It will be a fully fledged event in 2024 Olympics though- likely to be held in France or the USA.

Kitesurfing is already part of the next Youth Olympics Games (YOG) in 2018, held in Argentina- and Tiger Tyson is aiming to compete. At the games, the race course will be a downwind slalom boarder cross using a twin tip board. This means that competitors have to perform around 6 gybes. On the course each mark is more than 150 meters apart, with a ‘boarder cross’ which is an inflatable cylinder shaped buoy, about 5 foot high (though the height may change) that must be cleared. Competitors also have to perform a jump after every gybe; this means that although it won’t be a long race, to win you’ll need pure power right up until the end.

A post shared by Sc:tigertyson3 (@tigerkiting) on Mar 26, 2017 at 7:22am PDT

In the run up to the Youth Olympics Tiger is busy juggling school and training, which is no mean feat given his already hectic schedule travelling around the world to keep up with his Dad when he’s on leave from the yacht.

“My coach, Michael Gebhardt (Gebi) who is a five-time Olympian for the USA, one silver and one bronze medalist for windsurfing, is now teaching me his racing ways. Since the beginning of 2017 my focus has been on downwind slalom boarder cross and now that I’m training with Gebi I’m improving faster than ever. At the moment I am getting out on the water as much as possible and every day I am exercising and stretching to keep fit and stay in shape, putting your all into kitesurfing really beats up your body up if you don’t look after it.”

A post shared by Sc:tigertyson3 (@tigerkiting) on Mar 6, 2017 at 11:35am PST

In between all of this, Tiger and his Dad (who is currently the captain of another 74m Motor Yacht) are refining his equipment and searching for new sponsors. Tiger turns 15 this May, and a win at his first competition in South Korea would be the best possible start to the year.

“My first competition will be in May in South Korea, the TTR open. I have ordered 4 new kites, all Ozone Edge V9s. In my opinion, these are the fastest twin tip race kites out there. The kites have only just been released so production on them is only just starting now. It’s a really tight schedule, and if I’m to compete in May we are really going to have to push hard on all fronts to be ready in time. On the lead-up to this competition, I’m training hard, and sleeping and eating well so I’m in the best possible form.”

A post shared by Sc:tigertyson3 (@tigerkiting) on May 1, 2017 at 6:54am PDT

This was the turning point that made this distinguished members-only establishment the ultimate gentleman car aficionado’s dream spot offering a restaurant, bar, private members’ rooms, a McGregor collection boutique, the ‘ACM Sport & Marketing’ agency and ticket office for all motor-related events.

How to: upgrade your superyacht

The new build sector is as exciting as it’s ever been at the moment: 100m+ is the new ‘normal’ in the superyacht world, and some of the boats we are seeing emerging from their build sheds are enough to make your jaw drop.

It’s clear that many of these iconic launches come thanks to the ambition and vision of serial yacht owners; who are always looking to excel themselves and make their yachts bigger than ever.

Let’s take a look at 7 recent superyacht upgrades which had the yachting world dancing with excitement.

A post shared by Superyacht Content (@superyachtcontent) on Apr 12, 2017 at 2:14am PDT

1. Lurssen launched the new Areti for Russian owner Igor Makarov

The Areti series of boats have been turning heads since the old days in yachting when large boats were around 40m long! At one point there were three globetrotting ARETIs in service; ARETI, ARETI I and ARETI II. The latter two boats are identical and based in the United States and the Caribbean respectively, whilst ARETI herself has been sold and renamed MIA ELISE.

Makarov has launched his latest yacht at Lurssen, which had been under construction under the name Project Gatsby. She’s a beauty

2. From lion-cub to the leader of the pack: Philip Green’s Lionheart

Quite some upgrade this one! British retail magnate Sir Philip Green and his wife Tina decided it was time to scale up in 2016, and went back to their favourite Italian yard Benetti to get it done. LIONHEART is the largest yacht ever launched by Benetti, although there are rumours this may not last for long…

The Green family’s old yacht has now been rechristened LIONESS V, and is available for charter with Camper & Nicholsons.

3. Not just a color-change: brand new yacht Aviva has been turning heads already in Germany

We loved the original 68m AVIVA, with her striking grey hull and yellow detailing that made her a distinctive addition to the fleet following her launch in 2007. Her owner is the British property tycoon Joe Lewis, and his love for yachts clearly doesn’t stop at just one!

The new, sky-blue, AVIVA is German yard Abeking & Rasmussen’s new flagship at 98m and is also a record breaker for British design Studio Reymond Langton.

4. Sailing up a size with regatta-winner Salperton

This ambitious yacht owner has been through a number of boats with the same name, getting faster and faster on the race circuit with every edition. In a brilliant interview with Boat International, owner Barry Houghton describes his yachting journey and how he has refined his vessel to his tastes accordingly through trial and error.

The current SALPERTON is number 4, and you may have seen her predecessor sailing under the name ARTEMIS.

5. A colourful change up onboard CRN’s new Cloud 9

This was one of the most exciting and visually captivating launches of the year and took place in Ancona at CRN’s shipyard. The lucky owners of this stunning 74m motor yacht looked on in wonder as their new toy slid backwards into the water to the tune of opera singers and the Star Wars theme- but were they missing their old boat I wonder?

The previous inception of the Cloud 9 yachting story was a 60m CMN, which was sold on to become ICE ANGEL. You can get a look at her Winch-designed interior now, as she is available for charter!

6. Have some faith in Feadship…

Sorry, terrible joke. It has recently come to light that Feadship’s latest headline launch, Project Vertigo, was built for none other than Lawrence Stroll. The fashion entrepreneur is the owner of iconic 62m Feadship FAITH, but seemingly decided that bigger-is-better and opted for a massive upgrade!

Never one for missing out on a deal though, Lawrence Stroll has listed FAITH for sale with Burgess.

A post shared by Superyacht Content (@superyachtcontent) on Apr 12, 2017 at 2:21am PDT

7. The biggest upgrade of them all – Alisher Usmanov’s DILBAR

Sometimes in life, you find that ‘big’ isn’t ‘big enough’. There is no better example of this than the crazy upgrade Alisher Usmanov made when he commissioned the world’s largest yacht – DILBAR. The previous version of DILBAR (now named ONA), was always the largest boat on the IYCA in Antibes anyway, but since has been relegated to almost-minnow status by her much, much bigger sister.

You can find more out about the crazy numbers involved in the DILBAR build by reading our article Dilbar: 7 Facts you really didn’t need to know.

The best events to charter a yacht for worldwide

By all accounts, the charter market is in as fit-a-state as ever. You’ll hear from some corners of the industry a collective groan as construction figures decline, but practically speaking it’s the yacht charter business that is the better macroeconomic barometer.

A post shared by West Nautical (@westnautical) on Mar 22, 2017 at 2:37am PDT

Why is this? Well, the charter market represents a much wider pool of clients within the sector- and it’s a business that is subscribed to by a customer base that contains, for the most part, entrepreneurs and other business people who you won’t necessarily find on the Forbes 100 list. These are the people and enterprises that keep the wheels turning- the gold plated nuts and bolts of our economic system. And if they’re spending lavishly on yachting holidays, then you know confidence must be high!

A post shared by West Nautical (@westnautical) on Mar 9, 2017 at 7:37am PST

West Nautical is an established brokerage for yacht charters that prides itself on its success within a particular corner of this market. According to Managing Director Geoff Moore, the title of most ‘bullish’ area within yacht charter at present goes to the 25-44m range:

“It’s a great place to be in the market!” Geoff says. “The value for money you get with this class of boat is better than anywhere else within the charter fleet. The flexibility of smaller boats means they’re far more available for day and weekend charters, and sometimes this works particularly well for guests who want something last minute or as part of a shore based holiday.”

A post shared by West Nautical (@westnautical) on Jan 26, 2017 at 9:10am PST

The value part of this offering is easy to understand. Charters onboard 25-44m superyachts range from about £20k -£80k per week, and can easily be split between a few families or friends. You still can get 12 guests onboard a 44m boat, which for the most part will have most of the same facilities as something 50m+, but at a much lower price tag.

A post shared by West Nautical (@westnautical) on Mar 14, 2017 at 2:16am PDT

“Plus, you can’t beat the intimacy of a small-boat charter,” Geoff explains, “family time onboard is really special when you’re not dwarfed by enormous deck or saloon spaces, and you can really enjoy a quality experience together onboard without feeling overwhelmed by the size of the boat.”

Smaller yachts are great for company charters too, as they represent an impressive experience for clients and shareholders at a budget that won’t make the FD see red…

The Best View in the House

Often yachts in this size range are chartered in order to get a special perspective on a certain event. We asked West Nautical what their calendar looks like throughout the year, and which occasions are best enjoyed from the water.

Monaco GP

A post shared by Travel • Adventure • Life (@traveladventurelife) on Apr 2, 2017 at 5:43am PDT

The world’s most famous race is the perfect opportunity to take to the water and charter a yacht. Trackside berths are pretty hard to come by, but certainly not impossible when you choose a local charter broker like West Nautical. If you can’t get a spot for the Monaco Grand Prix, check out the Classic Grand Prix as an excellent, sociable alternative.

West Nautical elaborate:

“The Monaco GP is the highlight of the season in most peoples eyes, and it marks the start of the summer season in yachting. Every year every available berth is taken and clients are lining up to charter yachts, whether privately of corporate.”

MiPiM, South of France

This four-day real estate exhibition, conference, and networking event is a good one to add to your must-visit list as it offers something a little different. Everyone who is anyone on the international property scene will be at MiPim, and we’ve heard that they have some pretty star-studded parties!

Here’s what West Nautical has to say:

“MiPim is the first real Med based event in the calendar where a lot of yachts are chartered. They are usually corporate charters where lunches, dinners, and parties are hosted for business development opportunities which works well with unpredictable weather in March!”

America’s Cup, Bermuda

Bermuda isn’t a place where yachts spend a lot of time, but that’s all about to change! This year’s America’s Cup will be held in May on this laid-back Caribbean island. Thanks to new, more relaxed regulations, yachts will be able to enjoy up to three months chartering in the area.

West Nautical continues:

“The America’s Cup is the highlight of the racing season and the pinacle of the professional yacht race circuit, so if you could charter a yacht to see the action live on the water, why wouldn’t you?”

St Barths’ Bucket

A post shared by AYSS Superyacht Agents (@aysscaptain) on Mar 30, 2017 at 1:34am PDT

The St Barth’s Bucket is one of the most prestigious racing events in the yachting calendar, and it has the social side to match. Now in its 22nd year, the Bucket in St. Barths is a favourite for those wishing to charter whilst spectating top-standard racing.

West Nautical say it’s perfect for yachting enthusiasts:

“Many yacht owners are also yacht enthusiasts, and the unique nature of the Bucket has such appeal that members of yacht clubs globally pool together to charter a yacht to either race in the events, or as their base for the week. It has a very special feeling to the event which attracts many repeat clients.”

Loro Piana

A post shared by Loro Piana (@loropianaofficial) on Mar 16, 2017 at 8:39am PDT

The Loro Piana is a favourite for anyone who enjoys a good party. The Boat International crew are one of the chief organisers of the regatta and you can always rely on them for a decent party! The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda provides a mesmerising venue for the regatta’s glitzy social calendar. The 2017 event is approaching, but you’ll need to book quickly in order to get a yacht in the area!

The Loro Piana racing calendar is the principle sailing event in the Med and attracts professionals related to the industry as well as enthusiasts and those addicted to dedicated racing teams in the most up-to-date craft available. There are ever increasing yachts participating in the 4 days event, and as such there are more motor yachts being charters as the base of the race teams, their sponsors, and fans.”

Cool Cats

Catamarans have long been popular in Asia, both for entertaining and stability when cruising, and we just can’t wait to check out the massive 46-meter tri-deck catamaran Charley, making her World Premiere at the Show. We are heading straight to see her fully operational dive store, decompression chamber, and specialist sonar equipment.

The Big Boys

At 65 meters, the Benetti motor yacht Ambrosia has just arrived in Singapore for her third consecutive Show. With her six-massive deck levels, you will want to be careful to specify which level, when you tell someone you’ll meet them on the aft deck (!). If you’re a film buff, you’ll recognize quickly the 41 meter MY Ocean Emerald, designed by Norman Foster and featured in the cult film, Point Break.

The 77-meter M/Y Silver Fast is the biggest yacht ever to be displayed at the Singapore Yacht Show. Super sleek is an understatement, this yacht will be a standout for its fuel efficiency and speed. Just 21 days is all it takes for her to cruise from Australia to Europe with only one single fuel stop.

Thirteen stunning yachts will be on show with Boat Lagoon Yachting, the Show’s biggest exhibitor in 2017 with the Princess S60, Princess 49 and Jeanneau’s Merry Fisher 895 also all making their Asia Pacific debuts. Simpson Marine this year has two Asian Premieres with the Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62 and the Beneteau Gran Turismo 46 along with the Lagoon 620 Essence and Monte Carlo 6, both making their Singapore debuts. Hong Seh Marine, the Ferretti Group’s local dealer will showcase five yachts at the show, three making their regional debut, not to mention the popular Sunreef and Azimut yachts on show. After all the yacht hopping you’ll find us over at The Lawn, the new pop-up lounge concept at the Show featuring Pimm’s cocktails.

Opening up the Toy-Box

Thrill seekers will love the on-water Demo Platform where visitors can try out first hand a range of cool toys and yacht accessories. Fashionistas will head towards one of the haute couture fashion shows, or for automobile enthusiasts what about the Supercar Parade on the Esplanade featuring the latest Ferrari and Lamborghini models? The Show is also a family affair with a big range of bouncy castles, virtual reality regatta experiences for first-time sailors and game stalls to keep the little ones entertained.

Boat shows are usually never a dawn to dusk undertaking and we love the Singapore Yacht Show’s new opening hours from 3.00 to 9.00pm. They really know how to time things for maximum appeal. You won’t feel guilty sleeping in after a busy evening of yacht hops and parties into the early hours of the morning! The countdown starts now!

Benetti‘s Ulysses boasts some seriously beautiful furnishings. Her most unusual feature could be the two statues located on her sundeck aft, which are said to represent two crows. Perhaps the owner wanted guests to feel well-guarded?!

5. MEAMINA

59m motor yacht Meamina has a few very special features. These include her main saloon cinema, and her very own custom water slide! Yacht spotters around the globe always comment on just how wide (or beemy) this yacht is for her length. This means much more interior volume for your money!

6. IDOL

OceanFast’s M/Y Idol is a pretty sight thanks to her timeless styling and vast outdoor spaces. Something you might not notice at first glance, however, is her Teppanyaki Grill situated on the sundeck… The presence of this Japanese show cooking eqipment hints that there may well be a very talented Chef on board. Who could resist?!

Twilight is one of the few sailing yachts to be attending the MYBA Charter Show, and features extra-comfortable cruising thanks to its flybridge which is extremely unique for a yacht of this size. She can also reach speeds of up to 14 knots- that’s fast enough for us!

9.CASINO ROYALE

With a top speed of 45 knots Casino Royale is still one of the fastest mega yachts on planet. Powered by triple MTU with total of 6000HP she has the largest Arneson propulsion ever built. What is you favorite super-fast megayacht?⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️=====================#tbt #speed #superfast #mtu #arneson #yacht #charter #yachtcharter #motoryacht #luxuryyachts #luxurylife #theworldofyachts #ibiza #palmademallorca #palma #sunseekerpredator108 #casinoroyale #luxurylifestyle #barcelona #instatravel #instafollow #instapic #mycasinoroyale #bigtoys #goodlife #luxurylifestyle #yachtdesign #luxurytoys #rich #megayachts #superyacht

The stunning Sunseeker Predator 108 has just been confirmed for attendance and features in Casino Royale. The luxury motor yacht, owned by villain Le Chiffre, is spotted by Bond right after he lands with the seaplane and is again seen later in the movie. Plus with a top speed of 45 knots she is one of the fastest mega yachts on planet.

10. AXIOMA

M/Y Axioma was Dunya Yachts‘ debut build. She’s got a lot to boast about, in particular, her styling from the late Alberto Pinto. We think her most awesome feature, however, is her sundeck swim-up bar!

Mark Feltham, Executive Director Marine & Superyachts for Willis Tower Watson, said: “This will be our first time as a Sponsor or Exhibitor at MYBA’s annual Charter Show. The relocation to Barcelona, where we have offices in MB92 and the Financial Centre, was the key to this decision. We consider Barcelona to be the ideal venue for us to meet with both existing and potential clients in an environment clearly amongst the best in yachting. We wish the inaugural event every success and look forward to meeting everyone at our stand or at one of the many events during the week.”

I have worked many years with the Luise family, and have spent a great deal of time in the past building agency services throughout the Mediterranean, but especially the Adriatic. I appreciate the philosophy of keeping focus on small, local businesses and not necessarily one of a large corporate structure. it allows for a culture of being more flexible to the customers’ needs and getting things accomplished in a quicker and more efficient manner.
