Superyachts Make Terrible Hiding Places…

46m superyacht MY Lady May made the headlines last week for all the wrong reasons when Steve Bannon, Political Strategist to US President Donald Trump, was arrested onboard.  Bannon is accused of secreting funds into his own pocket, as well as that of fellow co-founders, as part of a massive fraud scheme behind the crowd-funded ‘We Build The Wall’ program.  Successfully prosecuted, Bannon would face a 20-year prison sentence.

Lady May is reportedly owned by Guo Wengui, an exiled Chinese billionaire, who has business ties with Bannon.  The arrest was made off the coast of Connecticut and photos surfaced of Bannon soaking up the sun on the aft deck prior to the arrival of military planes and coastguard.

But what is there to know about the 46m superyacht, which proved to be a poor choice of hiding place?

The Boat Show Breakdown

It’s on, it’s off. It might be on. Maybe, possibly; Probably not. Who knows? Well we do, sort of. Like many, we are trying to pick our way through the forthcoming boat show and events calendar, and make commitments that can be cancelled, book travel that can be refunded and, basically, plan for the unknown.

If you’ve lost track of the boat show calendar, here’s a little round up of recent cancellations, confirmations and new additions.

SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW
Whilst not typically regarded a superyacht show, for the UK yachting industry the Southampton Boat Show is a biggie. With the likes of Sunseeker and Princess having ventured into superyacht territory in recent years, there’s a good deal of business to be done here. BUT, British Marine have announced that in light of government guidelines on large-scale gatherings, the 2020 Southampton Boat Show will not be going ahead.

British Marine have muted that a smaller-scale, outdoor-only event may take its place but as yet, no details have been announced.

CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL
Despite the cancellation of its regional neighbour, Reed Exhibitions Group – the organisers of Cannes Yachting Festival – confirm that the 43rd edition of the show will take place as planned, September 8th – 13th. The show will again stretch across Cannes’ two ports and the layout takes into account all advisable measures in accordance with preventing Covid-19 pandemic spread. This includes management of the visitor flow throughout the two sites, the wearing of face masks, hand sanitizer stations and continual cleaning of common areas.

The Cannes Yachting Festival has taken place every September since 1977, and big-name exhibitors already confirmed for this year include Azimut Benetti, Fairline, Ferretti Group, Majesty (Gulf Craft), Mangusta, Nautor’s Swan, North Sails, Pantaenius Insurance, Princess Yachts, Sanlorenzo, Sunreef, Sunseeker, Vanquish and Wally.

MONACO YACHT SHOW
Monaco Yacht Show made the announcement on June 26th that this year’s show, the celebratory 30th edition, would be postponed to 2021. There was significant pressure placed on the organisers by leading industry names and associations (such as LYBRA and SYBAss) to abandon this year’s plans in both the interest of public safety and companies industry-wide whose finances had been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Informa Markets, the international events company responsible for Monaco Yacht Show, cited disruption to the annual cruising calendar as the reason for its postponement, with many superyachts remaining in the US and Caribbean.

Coinciding with its break from the 2020 boat show calendar, Informa Markets has opted to join a Superyacht Industry Taskforce, which will review how yacht shows are run in the future and seek to better serve the objectives of owners, shipyards, brokers and suppliers.

FLIBS
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, also part of the Informa Group, is still tabled to go ahead, October 28th to November 1st.
Set to continue for the second year, is the show’s Superyacht Village. This in-water and shore-side enclave will accommodate the largest yachts in show, as well as personal submarines, luxury cars and helicopters.

With travel to the US still largely advised against by most European countries however, and many wary to visit the US whilst Covid-19 case numbers remain so high, it may end up being a rather local show for local people…

BOAT INTERNATIONAL YACHTING FESTIVAL
Following disruption to events that were planned for earlier this year, Boat International has opted to unite three of its headline annual events into a three-day Yachting Festival, to take place in Monaco, November 11th – 13th.

The event, which encompasses two of Boat International’s annual conferences – Life Under Sail and the Explorer Yachts Summit – as well as the 2020 World Superyacht Awards, will bring superyacht owners, senior industry stakeholders and top-tier professionals together.

THE SUPERYACHT FORUM
The Superyacht Group have confirmed that they plan to run their annual conference, The Superyacht Forum, in Amsterdam this November.

The theme for this year’s is ‘One Industry, One Forum, One Mission’, and the event will provide an opportunity for the industry’s greatest minds to map out how the superyacht sector should refocus itself in the wake of its toughest challenge to date.

Martin Redmayne, Chairman of The Superyacht Group, comments, “Obviously due to Covid-19, we will have to follow social distancing rules, but we will still deliver a powerful Forum.” He expects delegate places to be limited, perhaps to around 350, but remains confident that the forum will retain its popularity with industry leaders, investors and CEOs. Redmayne adds, “This year we will have the added dimension of live streaming, meaning that hundreds of delegates from around the world who cannot join us, will still be able to participate in the debate.

The Superyacht Forum takes place November 16th – 18th.

METSTRADE
Being an all-indoor event, November’s METSTRADE is undoubtedly going to look a little different this year, but both the organisers and host venue (Amsterdam’s RAI) are confident that their ‘safe, responsible and hospitable’ protocol will permit them to deliver a successful show that remains valuable to both exhibitors and attendees.

METSTRADE will take place November 17th – 19th, and is the world’s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems. The show has served as a platform for innovation, market developments and networking since its launch in 1988.

Croatian Island Hopping – Superyacht Style

The sparkling blue waters of the Adriatic have serious superyacht appeal, and with Croatia having been one of the first European destinations to reopen its borders and ports to visitors, superyachts have put pedal to the metal and headed for the region in the hope of resurrecting some of their summer charter season.

We asked the charter experts at West Nautical for a little Croatia itinerary inspiration.  Check out this eight-day charter suggestion, which takes-in the highlights of the Croatian coastline and islands.


Day 1 – Dubrovnik to Sipan

Dubrovnik is an ideal spot to start a Croatian superyacht charter.  Fly into the international airport by scheduled carrier or private jet, and take the pre-arranged transfer to the port.
Whilst in Dubrovnik, West Nautical recommend taking some time to explore the city, which has an awe-inspiring old town with fortress walls. Delve into both the history and the myriad of ice-cream shops as you explore the cobbled twists and turns of this ancient metropolis.  Charming cafes are found along every step of the way, and in the modern part of town there are plenty of high-end establishments serving international and experimental cuisine, all with typical Croatian hospitality.

Day 2 – Sipan to Mljet Island

Wake to a breakfast served al fresco, and enjoy your coffee with a view whilst sailing along the coast to your next destination.
Visit miles of forest and the seawater lakes, indulge with some wine tasting, olives and goat’s cheese at the local restaurants and spend a relaxing day on the mesmerising island of Mljet.
Make use of the onboard watersports equipment and explore the saltwater lakes by kayak or stand-up paddleboard.

Day 3 & 4 – Mljet to Lastovo Islan

Start your morning with a swim in the shallow turquoise water off Mljet before the Captain sets sail across the Adriatic to your next island stop, Lastovo. Here there is plenty to do for the active guest, including fishing, hiking and cycling tours. For a more adventurous afternoon, scuba diving the shipwrecks of Roman and medieval times is an incredible underwater step-back in time.
The numerous sandy beaches offer a relaxing alternative to the busy activities, and there are many places to enjoy a sundowner and a good book before returning to the yacht for dinner under the stars.

Day 5 – Korcula to Trstenik Peninsula Peljesac

When arriving at Trstenik Peljesac, the crew will drop anchor and get the tenders, jet skis and water toys ready for an active morning. Head ashore to one of the many beaches of this Adriatic gem or venture inland to explore the countryside. For a taste of local life, dine ashore in one of the village’s many traditional restaurants.

Day 6 – Trstenik to the National Park, Mljet

Sail along the coast towards the National Park of Mljet. There are guided tours of the park available but the best way to see it is by bike or hiking, and you can discover the beauty and many monasteries for yourself.  After a day of exploration and stunning vistas, West Nautical recommend a well-deserved dinner at the Old Mill’s restaurant on the lake.

Day 7 – National Park Mljet to Zaton

Enjoy the morning onboard or relaxing on the beach, and take some time to walk “the pine” – an area surrounded by impossibly white sandy beaches. Spend the afternoon perfecting your watersports skills and for a particularly unique dinner head for the Kenobi Kadar Restaurant which is positioned right at the water’s edge.

Day 8 – Dubrovnik

Take a final swim before the yacht lifts anchor and begins its sail back to Dubrovnik, where you’ll wave goodbye to Croatia and disembark with fantastic memories.

TUNISIA – Open For Business

Tunisia is a land with diversity at its core. Flanked by the hot Sahara Desert and the azure blue Mediterranean Sea, it weaves a rich tapestry of culture, cuisine and archaeological wonders. More significantly, in the wake of Covid-19, it has elevated itself to be one of the safest superyacht cruising grounds, recording some of the lowest numbers of coronavirus cases throughout Europe to date. As a result, border restrictions are due to be lifted on June 27th, and Tunisia is now open for business.

As a prized superyacht cruising ground, Tunisia is adept at providing seclusion and security in equal balance. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020, swift action from the Tunisian government meant the country entered into a highly effective early quarantine period. A country-wide lockdown commenced on March 21st with borders closing across land, sea and air, and a night-time curfew imposed.

Tunisian citizens who were abroad at the start of lockdown were safely repatriated by the government, with a required 14-day isolation period spent in hotels at the expense of the Tunisian government. Three months on and the country’s diligence has paid off two-fold; it is among the first in Europe to reopen its borders to foreign visitors and remains a safe haven for yachts and tourists alike.

To quantify this, Tunisia has just 5 active cases per million population, compared with Spain and France that respectively have 1,329 and 1,362 active cases per million population (numbers taken from the John Hopkins Trust data set on June 8th 2020)

From June 27th, yachts will be welcomed back to cruise Tunisia’s waters and resume their regular maritime services, including duty-free bunkering. Strict procedures and safety protocols for the hospitality industry and wider businesses are being rolled out in preparation for this date. Working in accordance with guidelines laid out by the World Health Organisation, hospitality staff are undergoing additional training to be able to competently undertake newly required safety procedures. A concerted effort is being made nationwide to ensure the outstanding successful management of the coronavirus pandemic continues once normal daily life resumes.

Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisations (UNWTO), states: “Tunisia’s successful experience in the fight against the coronavirus sends reassuring signals to the rest of the world. They are of one of the safest countries in terms of health, that tourists can visit.”

Kim Williams of Yacht Services Tunisia, comments: “Tunisia has been through a lot over the past nine years, but each time it rises up against the odds. Now as the end of lockdown is in sight and with our international boarders about to reopen, we should all be very thankful for the swift action that the Tunisian government has taken. We will of course follow strict sanitary procedures when we welcome our yachts into port and will continue to follow all government protocols as they are released.”

From ancient ruins to sea therapy spa treatments, and pristine golf courses to a collection of fully-serviced prestige superyacht marinas, Tunisia is waiting with its arms open wide to welcome its owners, captains and crew a safe return to its inviting and protected shores.




The Solomon Islands & Papua New Guinea Expeditions

We caught up with PELORUS Co-Founder Jimmy Carroll to learn more about his recent superyacht expeditions to the Solomon Islands & Papua New Guinea, and to pick up some tips for others thinking of embarking on similar adventures.

In December 2019, PELORUS Co-Founder Jimmy Carroll led an expedition to the Solomon Islands for 35m MY SPIRIT, followed by an expedition to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands for 63m SURI. Each trip was carefully curated by the PELORUS Yacht Expeditions team and was tailored to each group’s criteria.  A superyacht is a perfect platform for embarking on such an expedition, allowing guests to experience the best of both land and sea.

For SURI and SPIRIT’s trips to the Solomon Islands, the itinerary comprised:

The Solomon Islands offer a completely unique experience each day, and many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.  Throughout the Solomon Islands, the history of ancient civilisations is blended with the events of more recent times. There are many reminders of the part these islands played in World War II and the well-preserved wrecks, including that of a US fighter plane near Double Island, are incredible scuba and snorkeling sites.
The variety of marine life to be found in the Solomon Islands is really quite amazing, from dugongs and turtles to crocodiles and Black Tip Reef Sharks.

Jimmy advises that the trip to Skull Island was a particular highlight for guests: “Skull Island is an ancient burial ground for former tribal and village Chiefs. Here, old sculls, obtained during the headhunting days of old, create a fascinatingly eerie display!”

For visitors wanting to feel immersed in the region’s culture, a walk through the village on Rendova Island facilitates a chance to converse with locals who are keen to share their way of life and traditions.

“A thorough understanding of the location is essential for visiting this region, accessing the two remote locations of Rendova and Double Island required a helicopter ride, and our knowledge of a local initiative to regrow coral in areas badly damaged by a tsunami, meant that guests were able to assist in planting coral on the wreck of a WWII Wildcat Navy fighter plane,” comments Jimmy.

Other highlights of this expedition included trekking through the untouched jungle to see a settlement that had only been discovered two weeks prior to the group’s arrival and flying over the Kolombangara volcano.

For SURI’s trip to Papua New Guinea, the itinerary was as follows:
– Raboul and surrounding areas
– Duke of York Islands
– Baining Mountains
– Jacquinot Bay
– Nakanai Mountains
– Blue hole

Papua New Guinea is rich in culture and traditions. The group saw local tribesmen scale coconut trees to harvest the coconuts, and they experienced a Baining Tribe Fire Ritual.

“A trip to Papua New Guinea is simply not complete without taking a flight over Mount Tavurvur, an active (and steaming!) Volcano,” advises Jimmy, and he also tells us of the playful super-pod of Spinner Dolphins that the group encountered.

“Really, the list of things to do, and experiences to be had, here just goes on and on. I think learning some spearfishing skills from the local tribesman and venturing out in their traditional outrigger canoes is another pivotal experience.”

Jimmy led the group on a recce of the area by helicopter, and guests loved later visiting snorkeling sites that they had seen from the air. Guests also enjoyed a tender ride up an inland river, taking them deep into the heart of the jungle and into scenes like those from a Hollywood movie, with jungle either side and mist rolling in around them.

These remote destinations are easier to access by superyacht than ever before, and they’re particularly well suited to it.  “Both of these destinations have a rich tapestry of tribal culture dating back hundreds of years, which means the experiences to be had are near impossible to find anywhere else in the world,” comments Jimmy.

Jimmy advises that general infrastructure is still basic but for many, it’s this rawness that makes the region so attractive. Lady Moura boasts a helipad, movie theatre, DJ room, indoor pool, spa with sauna, gym, owner’s study and medical suites amongst her onboard amenities. She has two galleys, one for the owner and one for the crew, a bakery and separate owner/crew laundry facilities.

The beach club also deserves a special mention. Frers 46m Trimaran listed for sale with Camper & Nicholsons

As the industry ramps up preparations for the forthcoming September boat shows, superyacht designer Mani Frers has taken the opportunity to put his 46m trimaran concept back into the limelight, and lists it for sale with Camper & Nicholsons.

The concept for this striking 46m vessel is already significantly developed. The pre-engineering phase and comprehensive tank testing has already been completed, bringing the design to a build-ready position with the McConaghy shipyard. With construction able to commence without the usual lead-time, the build period is greatly reduced and the superyacht could be in the hands of an owner in just 20 months.

Engineered to meet DNV commercial class for trans-oceanic use, and capable of economical long range cruising without compromising on speed, this stealthy-looking trimaran superyacht presents a new benchmark in multihull design and builds on an already highly successful fleet of McConaghy multihulls such as the 42.5m Adastra (designed by John Shuttleworth) and their semi-custom catamaran series (designed by Ker Design), the models of which range from 50 to 77ft in length.

Bow entry resistance has been dramatically reduced, in particular at speeds above 25kts where there are big efficiency gains, and the tri-hull configuration delivers an extremely sea-kindly and stable passage, as well as enhanced stability at anchor. The Frers 46m is the first and only composite structure/design that has Preliminary Class approval for both private and commercial use.

The Frers Trimaran offers huge exterior space with the aft deck spanning the full 11.2m beam of the hulls. This area is dedicated to al fresco living and features a Jacuzzi pool, a bar, freestanding sun loungers and plenty of relaxed lounge-style seating. From here, steps lead down the transom on either side, where a large bathing platform awaits. The primary tender garage, situated within the transom, can then be opened up and converted into beach club mode to further enhance this recreational area. Side garages port and starboard will house additional water toys, with ample space for another tender or a pair of jet skis.

The interior layout and design has been envisioned by award-winning UK superyacht studio, Design Unlimited. The multifunctional accommodation is for up to eight guests across four spacious en suite cabins. The master suite is on the top deck, offering elevated views and a private owner’s deck to aft, which is accessed through full-height glass doors and the remaining guest suites are situated on the lower deck.

At this pre-build stage, the interior design can be adapted and customised to suit an owner’s requirements and Design Unlimited welcome the opportunity to help an owner actualise their own unique vision.

On the upper deck, the design features a touch-and-go helipad – an unusual feature for a yacht of this size and a desirable addition for her usability as a go-anywhere superyacht.

McConaghy have been building super-strong, lightweight boats with complex hull forms for over 50 years and the yard are internationally recognised for their expertise in high tech racing and performance yachts. In the last two decades these have included some of the most successful maxis of all time as well as America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race boats.

Superyacht Charter with a Conscience

In 2018, Mark Robba, owner of 51-metre SY Dunia Baru, began construction of his Learning Centre on the Indonesian island of Mansuar. Intended to serve the whole of the Raja Ampat region, the centre will be an educational hub where locals can study, learn about conservation of their local environment, seek help for health related issues, and train in professions that will help them connect with and capitalise on the business from visiting yachts.

As the Learning Centre enters its final stages of construction, Robba is offering two weeks of discounted charter with all proceeds going towards the centre’s completion and the initial community programmes, which include the implementation of better waste management systems for the local villages. Guests are invited to see this inspirational work first hand and if they wish to become more involved, can dedicate some of their charter time to assisting directly with the build or other programmes, teaching at the school and interacting with the local community.

The eco-friendly Learning Centre has been designed by renowned Indonesian architect Popo Danes, and encompasses some 240 square metres, featuring a central library with additional rooms for workshops and classes. Three master shipwrights, who worked on Dunia Baru’s build, have been assisting the build team, meaning that even in its construction the Learning Centre has helped local craftsmen learn new skills and engaged the community.

Robba has been visiting Indonesia since 1990 and, after falling in love with this beautiful part of the world and its culture; in 2012 he decided to build his yacht there. Dunia Baru, launched in 2013, is a modern interpretation of a traditional Indonesian Phinisi vessel. Dunia Baru was built and is maintained to BKI Classification, and she has been completed to impressive superyacht standards. Robba has already lead the way with the eco sustainability of his own yacht, banning single-use plastic aboard and any reef-damaging amenities.

As a destination, Indonesia is comprised of over 17,000 islands and offers a remarkable paradise both above and below the water’s surface. In the Raja Ampat region, hundreds of jungle-covered islands form an incredible cruising area, with the islands themselves hiding ancient rock paintings and caves, and providing a habitat for the crimson bird of paradise. The Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, is not only home to the Komodo dragon, but is also a refuge for the endangered Timor deer and the rich marine ecosystem is a scuba-diver’s dream, hosting 14 species of whales, 1,000 species of fish and 260 species of coral. The Maluku Islands (the spice islands) are a veritable hothouse of biodiversity. This archipelago – wedged tightly in a nutcracker of shifting tectonic plates, boasts volcanoes, hot springs and sultry tropical rainforests.

Other initiatives already underway in the area, funded by Robba and his philanthropic collaborators, include the installation of solar-powered street lighting, island-hopping touring medical centres and the supply of educational resources to local schools.

World Superyacht Awards: USPs Of 5 Of Our Favourite Winners

The World Superyacht Awards (WSA) is one of the most glittering events in the yachting calendar, but it is about a great deal more than free-flowing Champagne and canapés.

The WSA event showcases the most exciting trends in yachting, ushering in the shining future of yacht design and technology, while also paying homage to the very best of yachting heritage. This year’s event took place on the 18th of May in Old Billingsgate in London, where the superbly-restored Victorian building on the banks of the Thames proved a fitting setting for a ceremony celebrating the very best of old and new luxury yachts.

In a year that saw fierce competition across 17 categories, including an ageing cruise ship converted into spectacular superyacht, heritage yachts lovingly restored (and emulated), and a vast three-masted sailing yacht moving yachting propulsion into a greener future, there are so many vessels that deserve to be celebrated. Below, we look at five winners that we think had the biggest unique selling points this year.

What made these five yachts succeed at the World Superyacht Awards 2019?

Motor yacht of the Year: DAR Casts a Sleek, Black Spell

In a category that pitted some of the most extraordinary yachts afloat against each other, the 90m DAR from Oceanco came out on top. With a stunningly sleek black and white exterior modelled on the lines of a shark (not for nothing was the build name ‘Project Shark’), the yacht was admired for its innovative use of more than 400sqm of black glass, which was mounted flush to the superstructure in an impressive design and installation feat. Other unique features that impressed the judging panel were the waterfall feature cascading into the aft deck pool and a beautiful light-filled interior inspired by nature.

DAR also won in the category of Motor yachts over 2000GT, edging out the spectacular WHITE RABBIT, the world’s largest superyacht trimaran, and ELANDESS with its magnificent semi-submerged viewing lounge; both yachts received special commendations in the hotly contested field.

Sailing Yacht of the Year: BLACK PEARL Sails into the Future

At a vast 106m, the three-masted Dynarig schooner BLACK PEARL takes what the iconic MALTESE FALCON began and runs with it. Dutch-built by Oceanco to a Ken Freivokh and Nuvolari Lenard design, BLACK PEARL combines all the modern superyacht luxuries with the age-old power of the wind, with this yacht winning acclaim for its ability to cross the Atlantic without a single drop of diesel being consumed. Her 2,900sqm jet black sails have even been prepared for the solar power generation – even though the technology isn’t quite ready yet – while the yacht’s not inconsiderable running power needs are all powered by her shaft generators.

While the judges were faced with a difficult choice for Sailing Yacht of the Year with outstanding contenders such as the exquisite modern classic VIJONARA in the running, the verdict was clear – BLACK PEARL must take the Neptune Award for guiding large yacht design into a greener future.

Displacement Motor Yachts between 300GT and 499GT: CECILIA


Building more environmentally-friendly yachts is a growing trend in the superyacht industry and CECILIA proved a worthy winner in the 40m+ category, with fuel-efficient propulsion from her diesel-powered electric azipods. While some other yachts do utilise this technology, where CECILIA’s design stood out is in locating the engine room in the bow and thus transforming the typical yacht accommodation layout in new and efficient ways. The judging panel were also impressed by the inclusion of float-in tender and submarine bays with convertible beach club – features very rarely seen in this yacht size range.

Conversion of the Year: DREAM — From Tired Cruise Ship into Dazzling Superyacht

Olympic Yacht Services have pulled something of a magician’s rabbit out of a hat with the stunning conversion of an ageing 93m cruise ship into a 106m superyacht for an intrepid world-travelling yacht owner. Eight years in the making, the project required a completely new superstructure, and the interior was gutted and sandblasted back to an empty shell before the Ciarmoli Queda Studio transformed it into a superb classical beauty with ancient Greek and sea motifs throughout. The conversion of DREAM was a clear winner at the World Superyacht Awards due to the sheer breadth and skill of the metamorphosis.

Best Rebuild: HAIDA, A Grand Old Dame Reborn


Continuing on the theme of superb refits, Pendennis Shipyard triumphed at the World Superyacht Awards with the rebuild of the classic motor yacht, HAIDA 1929. The design team of Cox & Stephens Design and Adam Lay were challenged with bringing this historic 71m beauty into the modern age, while still paying homage to her classic pedigree. The project was a roaring success, with an interior befitting a gentleman’s yacht of yesteryear while adding a luxurious Hamman, massage room and hairdressing salon, while original stairwells were reinstated and a larger swimming pool added. In the engine room, judges were extremely impressed with the effort taken to rebuild the original 1929 Krupp engines rather than replacing them.

Superyacht design evolves with each passing year, and the World Superyacht Awards celebrates this extraordinary process and the yacht owners, designers and shipyards that bring the future into being. We can’t wait to see what next year will bring!




Here’s What You Missed At The Croatia Boat Show 2019

Held on the west coast of Split, the Croatia Boat Show (CBS) has become an important event on the nautical calendar, marking the beginning of the ‘season’ for many in yachting circles. This was certainly the case this year, when between April 11th and April 15th more than 250 exhibitors – from world-renowned shipbuilders to shared yacht ownership brokers – flocked to the Adriatic coast to showcase their vessels and water accessories. It Got Off To A Bumpy Start

Organisers of the 21st Edition of the Croatia Boat Show 2019 were faced with a difficult decision when inclement weather threatened to cause havoc at the event.

A large percentage of the exhibitors were exhibiting luxury sailing yachts or motor boats, which were displayed in their natural environment, at sea. Their position on the water gave visitors the opportunity to properly try out vessels that caught their eye. However, with so many of the vessels being displayed in the open sea, stormy weather meant it was considered unwise to inaugurate the event on April 10th, as originally planned. Instead, CBS opened its doors at noon on April 11th, some 24 hours later.

It can’t have been for organisers to delay the opening ceremony at the 11th hour, but it appears that the gamble paid off, with a larger number of visitors attending the event than ever before!

A Very Special Birthday Celebration

With sophisticated bars and eateries dotted around the show, there was plenty of fun to be had for guests who needed a break from touring yachts. However, the entertainment at the Croatia Boat Show 2019 didn’t end when the sun went down.

The organiser of the event, Vicenco Blagaić, explained that a giant 2,700 square-meter barge had been completed just before the opening of the show, as a venue for evening celebrations.

And one very lucky and much-loved nonagenarian was treated to the birthday of all birthdays when a surprise 90th celebration was thrown for him at the Split Olympic Club during the boat show.

The party was held for former Olympic rower Duje Bonačić. In a speech made by Josip Reić, secretary of the rowing club, to honour Bonačić, Reić said: “His brain still works at the age of 90 as it did when he won an Olympic medal.”

A Roaring Success

All in all the event was widely enjoyed by all those who attended, providing a great networking opportunity for maritime professionals and proving itself to be a must-attend show for everyone in the boating industry.

The success of the Croatia Boat Show 2019 mirrors the growth of the yachting industry in the region, with Croatia being chosen by an increasing number of people looking for new and undiscovered cruising destinations. And who can blame them, with the area boasting a stunning coastline dotted with more than 1,200 islands and islets.

The 22nd Edition of the Croatia Boat Show will take place in Split in April 2020, although no dates have yet been confirmed. Watch this space!

Step Aboard – SY PERSEUS^3

Built by the award-winning Italian shipyard Perini Navi and with naval architecture by Ron Holland, SY Perseus^3 comes with an impressive pedigree and a performance edge that gives her the lead on the regatta racecourse. I stepped aboard during the St Barths Bucket to see why this superyacht is making waves.

Perseus^3 is the second hull from Perini’s highly successful 60m series. Her lightweight carbon fibre mast towers an incredible 78m and this, combined with her unique bowsprit arrangement and A2 spinnaker, delivers an adrenaline-fuelled ride. Sloop rigged, her sail wardrobe comprises two asymmetric sails (A2/A3), a code zero, reacher, blade, a spinnaker staysail, one working jib and an imposing main sail – all from Doyle Sails and providing a total combined 10,000sq.m of sail area.

To ensure safe and optimum sail handling, Perseus^3 is equipped with advanced systems and hardware. Along with captive reel winches and furlers, her jib winches can pull a load of 30 tonnes at a line speed of 40m per minute. With such credentials, Perseus^3 is highly attuned to regatta competition. Past events include the 2015 Perini Navi Cup, 2016 and 2017 St Barths Bucket regattas, and the 2017 Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta, where she won her class.

This year’s St Barths Bucket, saw her classed as a ‘Les Grand Dames des Mers’, and racing alongside her 60m Perini sistership Seahawk, as well as Rosehearty (Perini), Hyperion (Royal Huisman), Aquarius (Perini) and Columbia (Eastern Shipbuilding). Perseus^3 made a great start to the week, taking first place on day one. She lost out to Rosehearty on day two with Hyperion coming in second and nudging Perseus^3 into third place, but day three saw her regain ground and finishing in second. Overall, Perseus^3 finished second in class, with just one point separating her from the class winner.

Perseus^3 is equally impressive on the inside with a classic, contemporary interior that features wood panelling and a generally neutral palette with accents of colour. In her saloon, a large u-shaped sofa is separated from the dining area and smaller snug by a fixed panel housing the TV, which also disguises the central staircase.
