Rivergate Marina and Shipyard Approved For $200 Million Expansion

Rivergate Superyacht Marina, Brisbane

What’s new at Rivergate Marina?

Brisbane City Council recently approved Rivergate Marina and Shipyard development application for an expanded Superyacht maintenance and refit hub based on the Brisbane River. The expansions would be the catalyst for a jobs, alongside an array of benefits for Queensland’s marine and tourism industries.

The proposed expansion of the Brisbane marina is set to dramatically increase Superyacht visitation to Australia, while also providing vital new capability to service Australian Defence Force and Australian Border Force vessels.

Key elements of the expansion include:

  • A $35 million state-of-the-art shiplift capable of lifting vessels of up to 3,000 tonnes and 90 metres,
  • A new hardstand space
  • Sheds and berthing to service multiple large vessels at the same time.
  • A new 5-storey purpose-built facility featuring training rooms, offices, café, world-class crew accommodation and crew recreation facilities.

Rivergate Marina 5-storey purpose-built Trade Centre
A new 5-storey purpose-built Trade Centre for Excellence will focus on industry skills and training.

On completion, the expansion would generate an estimated 2,000 new jobs for marine and tourism sectors! It was also inject close to $1 billion into the Queensland economy each year, and ensure the region’s maritime industry is ready for the 2032 Olympic Games.

Rivergate Marina expansions plans
There will be outdoor space for recreational and socialising while at Rivergate.

Rivergate Marina and Superyacht Shipyard Director, Tom Hill adds:

“This approval means our expansion is now shovel ready and just waiting on government funding support to get under way.”

“Brisbane is already an ideal location for servicing and repairing Superyachts, several classes of Defence vessels and other commercial shipping. This expansion would provide owners and captains of large recreational vessels with the assurance that world-class facilities are available for both routine and unplanned maintenance works while they are cruising in our region. Not only this, but it’ll fill a much-needed gap in Defence and commercial vessel maintenance on Australia’s east coast. Eliminating the current necessity for some vessel classes to be serviced elsewhere in Australia such as Perth or Adelaide due to a lack of lifting capacity” – Tom Hill

Available to Owners and crew, the Captains’ lounge and library are integral parts of the plan.

Rivergate Marina and Shipyard, Brisbane was established in 2006 and is widely respected for its skilled trades, safe environment, and warm hospitality. It is a customs clearance marina that offers deep water access on all tides, near-perfect weather for year-round operations, and easy access to capital city services – Including the 24-hour Brisbane International Airport only 10 minutes away.

Refit International: The Leading Marine Engineering and Outfitting Specialists

Refit International has quickly become the leading marine engineering and outfitting specialist in the Superyacht industry. The company now operates globally, working closely with shipyards, applicators, and Captains on some of the most iconic superyachts to date. We recently caught up with Matthew Pidsley, the Managing Director, who discussed the story behind Refit International, but also the importance of the how and the why of hardware installation.

About Refit International:

The team is made up of shipyard and commercial engineers, as well as ex-yacht crew. Located in the UK, the business is run from two locations, one of which is its in-house fabrication facility.

Matthew Pidsley, Managing Director adds:

“Our team remove and install vessel hardware for paint works, overhaul hydraulic systems and fabricate metal. I’d say that 90% of our team are on the tools, the client doesn’t pay for suits. We are predominantly Engineers and Outfitters but cover a range of additional refit services. The Brits make up the majority, but we also have a couple of Italians and Aussies, which keeps the problem solving open-minded and the workplace banter fresh. One of our unique advantages is that almost half of the RI team are ex yacht crew, who reached the point where shore-based life is more appealing than another circumnavigation!

During the refit process, I place a great deal of emphasis on the how and the why of hardware installation – How we do it, but more importantly why we do it the way we do it! Until you’ve been to sea, I don’t believe you can fully appreciate why systems are designed the way they are. In terms of the type of work refit international does, we do a lot of installations, fault finding, and retrofitting. It gives us the edge when all the team has served time at sea.”

“90% of the team are on the tools; the client doesn’t pay for suits.”

Meet the Refit International Team

Behind the shipyard scenes.

RI Vessel Refit and New-Build service:

When it comes down to the vessel refit and new build services, the Marine Engineering and Outfitting team is involved in three core aspects:

Hardware, Caulking, & Glass

-The removal and reinstallation of exterior vessel hardware and associated components for re-sprays and new builds. Refit International work hand-in-hand with deck hardware providers, Harken, providing large amounts of hardware used in their projects.

Auxiliary Hydraulic equipment

-Installation, service, & certification of electromechanical systems such as hydraulic transom doors, Passerelles, Rescue Boat Cranes, Shell doors, load testing, anchoring systems, lifting keels, and Harken Access Rails

Stainless Fabrication & Polishing

-Including stairs, handrails, cowling, anchor pockets, windscreens, bollards, cleats, fairleads, locks, latches, etc.

Over the years, RI has worked with various companies within the yachting industry, such as MGMT Yachts and Harken. Through building these trusted relationships they have established themselves as one of the most reliable teams in their field. They’re approved by Flag and Class on installation procedures, as well as offering a range of Harken-approved installations. As a result of this, they’re one of the few companies that can demonstrate approved load testing and operational certification on their installations worldwide.

Superyacht Refit - Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth

What is it that the team stands by?

RI stands by its exacting and professional standards. Matt and the team are passionate about conveying this to Captains and Owners by offering a 12-month warranty on all their services, as well as a manufacturer’s warranty of 5 years.

In addition to the above, the number of females working in the yachting industry is rapidly rising, and the current employees at Refit are all in favor of driving diversity and change within the industry. For this reason, Matt and the guys are keen for female engineers to step forwards to showcase their skills and join the team.

The leading marine engineering and outfitting specialists have worked on a whole host of iconic Superyachts in the past year – you could probably even recognise a few yourself…  But unfortunately, when the company undertakes work on some vessels, it comes with signing a non-disclosure agreement. This means some details of operations remain largely unknown.

Following the delivery last summer of the main elements of the structure and 9 months of engineering work on-site, the Matière-Bardex team has now completed the complex task of assembling and moving the lifting platform to its final position. At 100 metres in length, equivalent to a football pitch, and 20 metres wide, the platform weighs 1,100 tonnes and required a team of 20 people and 3 hours to carry out the exceptional manoeuvre of moving the shiplift structure and 2 days for the final installation in the concrete recess.

The innovative Bardex lifting system which includes 20 chain jacks is now being installed and features a hydraulic ram and chain system expressly designed to increase safety and reduce maintenance.

The Installation of the world’s largest artificial harbour-based fish nursery:

The platform’s docks have been equipped with a biomimetic solution supplied by the company Seaboost. Based on the complex structure of Posidonia seagrass, this solution creates an effective, integrated, and safe environment that will encourage the reproduction of local marine species.

In addition to the nursery, La Ciotat Shipyards, the local port authority, have administered an exemplary project, implementing numerous environmental measures during the construction phase such as soil decontamination, reuse of materials on-site, installation of a double bubble curtain, and anti-sediment curtains to protect cetaceans and water quality.

Mathieu Bauden, MB92 La Ciotat Facilities Director comments:

“This is a key stage in the delivery of the 4300t platform which leaves us well-positioned as we enter the final six months of the project. The next important steps are the delivery of the control building, the installation of all energy networks, reception of the transfer system, the cradles, and final testing followed by certification by Lloyds this summer.”

Vincent Escallier, Commercial Director of MB92 La Ciotat added:

“We are all looking forward to the imminent opening of our new facility and this latest accomplishment brings us one step closer. It’s an extraordinary piece of infrastructure that complements the wide range of lifting options available to clients of our shipyard.”
