Behind the scenes: Onboard with M/Y Gene Machine crew

We go behind the scenes of the unique M/Y Gene Machine. In this interview, we chat about general Gene Machine adventures, their unique onboard Lab, the crew’s favourite parts and Nikki, the samoyed dog!

The Gene Machine specifics:

  • Size & Build: Amels 180 (55m) 2013
  • Crew members: 15
  • Guests: 10
  • Private/Charter: Private
  • Owner: Dr Jonathan Rothberg (developed next-generation DNA sequencing)

Where has M/Y Gene Machine been this year, and what is the itinerary looking like for the rest of 2022?

This year started in St Barths; then March/April was spent in the Bahamas, followed by some standby time in Miami. We then crossed to The Med, where we cruised Ibiza, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Monaco. The Gene Fleet is currently crossing back to Miami with possibly one more Bahamas trip before ending the year in St Barths. We have some exciting plans for 2023 up our sleeve, where the Gene Fleet will possibly be spending most of the year off the beaten track!

What does a typical guest day look like on M/Y Gene Machine?

A lot of time is spent relaxing, and meals are of utmost importance for bringing the family together. It all depends on location and the guests on board, but the kids are really into wake surfing at the moment and would spend 4-5 hours in the afternoon behind the Fjord or Nautique.

Could you tell us your crew’s favourite toys and gadgets onboard?

The crew does not use the guest toys, and when we do have time off, it’s generally spent away from the vessel and its equipment. Starlink RV has been a game changer for our crew and guests, and finally, a high-speed, reliable internet service. We can run without any restrictions on our internet access, allowing the crew to make video calls home and watch as much Netflix as their work schedule allows. We plan to upgrade to the Maritime SL this fall. The coolest toy we have would be the self-playing piano in the main salon that Kygo played when he visited last year in St Barths!

What is the most exciting discovery which has been made within your onboard Lab?

One would be that we can use natural genetic diversity to evolve proteins to clean up the world’s oceans. Secondly, we can have all the capabilities to create and test the world’s first scalable home lab quality test for covid, monkeypox, or any pathogen.

Which features do you have onboard make you stand out from other yachts?

Our custom beach club with Bruce and Nemo is unique! It’s fully decorated using a mosaic to depict a scene from Finding Nemo.

Can you tell us the main reasons why the owner bought Gene Chaser?

Allowing the owner to separate work and family time was the driving factor. It also means the family can spend more time onboard Gene Machine. The main reason was to extend the scientific research efforts. Gene Chaser has a laboratory on board and cabin space for scientists, allowing the boss to hold regular conferences for his ongoing projects.

Can you tell us how Gene Machine and Gene Chasers crew work together?

Having two crews working as one has taken some time to refine. Overall, we’re at a stage where both crews work well together, regularly switching between boats to offer a helping hand and sharing the workload.

What is the Captain’s favourite destination he has taken Gene Machine to?

The Northeast US, specifically New York, and up the Hudson River to Kingston in the fall of last year.

What is the chef’s signature GM dish onboard; for both guests & crew?

The guests love sushi, and the customised Gene Machine sushi boat is always a crowd pleaser! Chef Chris’ signature dish is sesame crust seared yellow tail, jalapeño, yuzu marmalade, ponzu, lime avocado purée, and cucumber.

What’s the engineer’s favourite part/gadget in the engine room?

Automatic Monitoring System (AMS) brings all of the Electrical & Mechanical System Parameters to one place. It allows us, as engineers, to be able to monitor machinery, tank levels, power levels, and usage. It also lets us know of any problems with machinery and will alarm us if it needs to do so.

What would it be if the GM deck team could only choose one watersports toy to have onboard?

Although we have some awesome motorised toys such as a Lift Foil and Jet Surfs, the guests learned to wake surf behind the Fjord from a young age, and it was used pretty much every day on the trip, so it would have to be our Hyperlite Wake Surfboards.

How does the GM interior team manage to have dogs onboard?!

They try to limit their usage of larger guest areas such as the main and bridge salons. The first time Nikki came on board, she nibbled on a few things (there are still a couple of teak steps with puppy marks), but we try and entertain Nikki, on deck as much as possible. The crew loves having them on board, and we’re never short of crew members offering to walk them ashore!

What is your Chief Stew’s favourite bit about GM interior?

The owner’s balcony opens up the master cabin beautifully. We try an anchor the vessel with the best views on the port side so the owner can enjoy the view!

MB92 La Ciotat Superyacht Shipyard Closer To Completion

MB92 La Ciotat, France’s leading superyacht refit shipyard, announced that a major milestone has been reached in the construction of the platform, maintaining the shipyard’s schedule for the opening of the facility as planned this autumn for yachts up to 115-metres in length.

MB92 Superyacht Refit Shipyard

What’s new?

Following the delivery last summer of the main elements of the structure and 9 months of engineering work on-site, the Matière-Bardex team has now completed the complex task of assembling and moving the lifting platform to its final position. At 100 metres in length, equivalent to a football pitch, and 20 metres wide, the platform weighs 1,100 tonnes and required a team of 20 people and 3 hours to carry out the exceptional manoeuvre of moving the shiplift structure and 2 days for the final installation in the concrete recess.

The innovative Bardex lifting system which includes 20 chain jacks is now being installed and features a hydraulic ram and chain system expressly designed to increase safety and reduce maintenance.

MB92 La Ciotat Shipyard

The Installation of the world’s largest artificial harbour-based fish nursery:

The platform’s docks have been equipped with a biomimetic solution supplied by the company Seaboost. Based on the complex structure of Posidonia seagrass, this solution creates an effective, integrated, and safe environment that will encourage the reproduction of local marine species.

In addition to the nursery, La Ciotat Shipyards, the local port authority, have administered an exemplary project, implementing numerous environmental measures during the construction phase such as soil decontamination, reuse of materials on-site, installation of a double bubble curtain, and anti-sediment curtains to protect cetaceans and water quality.

Mathieu Bauden, MB92 La Ciotat Facilities Director comments:

“This is a key stage in the delivery of the 4300t platform which leaves us well-positioned as we enter the final six months of the project. The next important steps are the delivery of the control building, the installation of all energy networks, reception of the transfer system, the cradles, and final testing followed by certification by Lloyds this summer.”

Vincent Escallier, Commercial Director of MB92 La Ciotat added:

“We are all looking forward to the imminent opening of our new facility and this latest accomplishment brings us one step closer. It’s an extraordinary piece of infrastructure that complements the wide range of lifting options available to clients of our shipyard.”

Superyacht Chef Jamie Tullys Gourmet Valentines Day Menu 2022

Superyacht chef Jamie Tully and the owner of Culinary Genius Store has put together a complete guide to a gourmet Valentines Day menu

Superyacht chef Jamie Tully

Can you tell us a little about yourself, your journey as a yacht crew, and the yacht you are currently onboard?

My name is Jamie Tully, I am from a small town in Wales UK called Builth Wells. I’ve been cooking since I can remember and I guess I follow the whole cliché, baking with my father and visiting my grandmother on a Sunday with a spread of homemade cakes and scones. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a chef, but I knew I wanted to be amongst the best. From culinary school, I became fully qualified, went through the ranks of some well-recognized hotels and restaurants in the UK.

Where did your yachting career as Superyacht Chef begin?

When I was 12, I visited Monaco with my family. I found myself extremely driven by the countries wealth, money, and vibrance. I remember seeing a chef step off a 50m yacht. That’s when I knew being a Superyacht chef is what I wanted to do. On the same holiday, I sat in the Café De Paris with my family and ordered ice cream. Ten years later, I sat at the exact same table and ordered the same exact ice cream, but this time I was on my day off from my work as a chef on a 50m yacht. It was a very proud and rewarding moment for me.

Being a chef onboard yachts makes me proud to have chosen this career path. My love for food and cooking has allowed me to travel around the world, seeing things and places most people will never get the chance to see. I have met people from all over the world that I now call friends. Cooked with the most exquisite seafood, the most expensive and sought-after ingredients on the planet. And not forgetting, worked on some of the most luxurious yachts, ski chalets, and villas in the world. I’m only 28 years old and I’m just getting started.

Which Yacht are you currently aboard?

I am currently employed as head chef on a 40m charter yacht. The yacht has recently gone through a complete refit and is about to be relaunched as part of an incredible brand. At this stage, I cannot disclose the vessel’s name. However, I can say that I’m extremely proud to be part of the refit and I’m looking forward to being part of its future. There are some really big things to come…

Planning the perfect gourmet Valentines Day menu

Planning menus for special occasions is something exciting, it’s something to celebrate. Valentine’s day in particular is great because it’s what’s romance without indulgence? The world of fine-dining sits perfectly with Valentines’ Day.

The following is an example of a gourmet Valentines day menu I would serve a couple onboard a yacht in 2022:

Gourmet Valentines Day Menu - StartersGourmet Valentines day menu - Main dishesGourmet Valentines day menu - Desserts

If you were to be taken out, what would your ideal Valentines’ meal look like?

If someone took me out for Valentines Day, I would definitely want to go to Nobu. I love all Asian flavors and techniques, so this is my favorite restaurant. My favorite dishes are the Miso cod and the Squid spaghetti – Simply delicious.

Lastly, 3 Superyacht Chefs who have inspired you throughout your career?

Many Superyacht chefs inspire me and I’m pretty lucky to be well connected in the industry via social media. If I had to choose 3 It would be Chef Danny Davies, Chef Dean Harrison, and Chef Andrew Lichaa– all of these guys cook and produce beautiful plates of food. They really sum up what being a yacht chef is all about.

Yacht Jobs: 5 Things To Avoid Asking in Your Interview

With yacht crew jobs on the rise, we’d like to give you advice for your interview. We’ve all been in a job interview before, haven’t we? If you’re already yacht crew, you will have been interviewed at some point. But, as time passes and your seniority builds you will find yourself interviewing others.

Lots of us have left an interview thinking “why did I ask such a stupid question?”. Others thought it went really well but never heard back. So, we talked to some Captains and senior crew and learned some of the things which annoy the interviewer. These are all questions that won’t do you any favours in a job interview. In fact, they pretty much guarantee you won’t get the job.

Yacht Crew Jobs

Do yacht crew get the weekends off?

Imagine you are a Captain. You have just spent half an hour talking to a potential new crew member about the yacht, itinerary, etc, and ask if they have any questions. This is the first thing that they ask. Yes, everyone likes a day off now and again but really? You must have a better first question than this!

How often do we get a pay rise?

This is the sort of question in an interview that will normally result in you being asked to leave! Ever wonder why you aren’t getting a second interview? This has probably got something to do with it.

Are any of the crew hot?

Yachting may not be the most PC industry in the world but there is still a line you don’t cross. This question is the line that comes after the line you don’t cross! Don’t be expecting a call back after that kind of blunder. Job interview over!

How fast is the internet on board?

Yes, we know it is very important to keep in touch with friends and family back home. It’s even more important to make sure you can post on Instagram to make sure they all hate you for your “perfect life” too. But, remember this is a job interview. We agree that communications and contact with the outside world are important but timing is everything. This should not be one of your “deal-breaker” questions.

How many courses per year will the yacht pay for?

Unlike the first three, this is actually a fair question to ask. However, from speaking to a few Captains about this it is all about timing and context. Asking about time off for training and self-development can make you look keen. You are career-minded and Captains like this. But asking for extra time off and money to pay for the courses can make you appear greedy and self-serving. There is a time and a place for this one, choose it wisely.

Remember this

Yacht crew jobs will always be around, and the interviews are tough. Remember, they are the only opportunity the interviewer gets to see what you are like as a person. Yes, it is definitely important to be yourself. Your personality is a major part of what is under scrutiny in a job interview. But, be the best version of yourself! Working on a Superyacht is all about presentation, standards, manners, timing, and most of all hard work. The person interviewing you wants to see you are capable of all these things. So, whilst all the questions above are valid (except maybe the hot crew one!) there is a time and a place for everything.

Feadship Project 823 Announced

Feadship recently announced a new 67.40-meter project 823 over Instagram.

Eddie Lucas

Eddie is a familiar face who’s returned, but this time as a first officer. After filming, Eddie returned to Baltimore to be with his family. His Instagram tells us that he did get to reunite with Captain Lee in August, as they spent some time together in Los Angeles. Back in April, he posted that he fulfilled his lifelong dream of purchasing a Rolex watch.

Fraser Orlender

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWa5AUNtiJN/

Rachel Hargrove

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWBrxuAPzeC/

Rachel returns as the Yacht Chef this season. It seems as though Rachel and Vincenzo, who she spoke of in Season 8 have split. Express have stated that Vincenzo gave Rachel an ultimatum because he didn’t approve of her career. She could only choose him or the yachting life, and since her career is going very well at the moment she did not choose him.

Rayna Lindsay

Another new face this season, Rayna joined as a Deckhand. As well as this, she is also a trained chef. Since filming, she travelled to Mexico and officially received her license as an advanced Scuba diver. She did 15 dives to gain this qualification, one of which was with Bullsharks! She has also said in her Instagram story Q&A’s that she would like to focus on her acting career more in the future.

Jake Foulger

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXKVZISoDlm/

Another new face from the United Kingdom. Jake joined as a Deckhand this season and certainly brought some entertainment. Since filming wrapped up he returned to London. But, he has made great friends with the cast. Especially Rayna who has described him as a best friend on her Instagram.

Wes O’Dell

https://www.instagram.com/p/CVQux2_rtGm/

Wes made his reality TV debut this season as a Deckhand. However, he has been in the industry for a long time. His Instagram tells us that he actually has his Captains license. Since filming, he has spent his time operating his own boat, called the Nightwind II. It charters through the Virgin Islands, which is where he has moved to.

Jessica Albert

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGp1VjqLo89/

Jessica joined this season as a Stew. She and Wes conjured up a romance, but this was not pursued after filming. Since the season Express reports that she took a trip to British Columbia, Canada before heading to Florida. She currently works as a freelance yacht stewardess whilst also training to become a hairstylist.

We hope you enjoyed seeing where the Below Deck Season 9 cast are now!

Date delivered: October 2009

Length: 115M

Cost: Є400 million

Fun Facts:

  • In 2017, the vessel saw itself wrapped up in a rather large legal dispute. Luna’s owner, Farkhad Akhmedov, and his ex-wife Tatyana Akhmedova disputed the yacht’s ownership during their divorce. At the time, the vessel was in Port Rashid in Dubai for maintenance. But, it had to stay there on arrest up until only last October, when disputes were finally settled and she was freed.
  • Luna boasts an interior designed by Donald Starkey and a striking exterior from New cruise.
  • She can accommodate up to 50 guests and 18 crew members over her five decks. Her facilities include not just one, but two helicopter pads, as well as a spar and beach club.

M/Y Solaris

  • Designer Marc Newson made his superyacht debut with Solaris, dressing her in a light grey hull with a bright white superstructure.
  • The yacht is owned by Chelsea F.C owner Roman Abramovich, the world’s greatest spender on yachts. Solaris is now an addition to what the media call ‘Abramovich’s Navy’.

Although small, the Lloyd Werft collection will certainly have a lasting impact!

World’s First 100% Electric Superyacht Limousine Tender Sold

On January 4th 2022, Pascoe International announced the sale of the world’s first 100% electric superyacht limousine tender. Additionally, the company has confirmed the new tender is now under construction. The vessel, which is under construction at a major Northern European shipyard is set for delivery to a large new build mothership in 2023.

How long was the research and development period for the electric superyacht?

Pascoe International is proud to now offer open-air guest tenders and limousines powered by a fully electric propulsion system. This has come after six years of research and development. With expert advisors and research partners, the Pascoe team has been examining the viability of electric propulsion for many years. During this process, they have carried out extensive R&D on hull design, motor integration, battery performance, and whole-system optimisation.

A statement from Tom Southern, Vice President at Pascoe International:

“The realisation of a zero-emission at point of use Limousine Tender with a top speed of 40 knots and a maximum range of 60 miles will be a defining moment for the superyacht industry. The e-Limousine truly signifies the beginning of a new wave of luxury water-borne travel and a move away from internal combustion propulsion systems in the superyacht sector.”

4 key positive impacts the electric tender will have on our environment:

With an ever-increasing focus on sustainability, this project will mark the start of a new era for yachting. The zero-emission Pascoe Tenders will be a showcase of advanced marine technology from launch and for many years to come.

It is not just the environmental impacts that make electric limousine tenders attractive to yacht owners and their guests. There are a number of advantages:

  1. A near-total removal of torsional vibration transmitted into the hull structure,
  2. Increased noise reduction
  3. Enhanced acceleration as a result of the torque profile of the electric motors.
  4. Charging using a ship’s own power generation systems rather than directly running on diesel.
  5. The knowledge that they are leading the global shift to zero-emission at point of use technologies.

There is no doubt that fully electric guest tenders are now a viable and superior alternative to combustion-driven boats. The first e-Limousine is now under construction, with a 2023 delivery date.
