Further details about the design team, features and specifications remain a secret but from what we can see, she’ll be joining the list of the worlds largest Superyachts…

The question is – Will this uncovered Lurssen project be as grand as their most recent Superyacht launch, 158m ‘Project Blue’?

Captain Wendy Introduces Seven Seas Prep Yachting X-Training Course

Captain Wendy Umla - Senior instructor at Seven Seas Preparatory Academy We recently caught up with Captain Wendy Umla, senior instructor at Seven Seas Prep to discuss the first-ever Intro to Yachting X-Training course.

What is your current job role and where are you based?

I’m the lead instructor at Seven Sea Preparatory Academy and I’m based in Connecticut, USA and Fort Lauderdale. I’ve also been a Superyacht Captain for quite some time now (Without putting a date to it… I’m on my 5th renewal).

What drove you to become a Senior instructor at Seven Seas Preparatory academy after yachting?

So, going back to before the pandemic, Marcus Cheeseman, the founder of Seven Seas Prep needed someone to help him with a yachting class and it just so happened that I was available at the time. However, while teaching a class in FL, I realized that the students were all flying in from the NE and Midwest. And that was in the middle of Covid. From that, I suggested to Marcus about starting a yacht training class in Connecticut, US instead. And so we did that, which turned out to be successful, and we went on to begin our stcw courses. Yet again, this also turned to be a huge success. And because of this, we now run them all year round in Connecticut.

At current, these are the courses we’re running at Seven Seas Prep Academy:

http://www.instagram.com/p/CakyYGzoboI/

Tell us a bit more about the latest Seven Seas Prep Intro to Yachting X-Training course:

Because of the great success of Seven Seas Prep stcw and yacht training courses, we’re now introducing the first Intro to Yachting X-Training course. This has been developed since I was finding that the industry is quickly evolving and more often that not, we’ll now have males participating in the interior courses, and females on the deckhand courses.

This incredibly extensive introductory course begins with the fundamentals and then moves into the things that will help make you a more complete team player. It touches on topics such as basic protocols that every yachtie should know. But also teaches rudimentary seamanship tools like essential knots and imperative requirements such as service etiquette and galley must haves. And it will even explain some basic engineering needs!

All in all, it’s an amazing opportunity for Seven Seas Prep to be able to offer a course that covers a much broader curriculum, that  will help junior/entry crew to determine which direction they’d like to go in their career.

What are the key benefits of crew registering for the Intro to Yachting X-Training course?

As a captain, I’m a firm believer in working as a team. When I ran the boat, I would make sure that my deck team would always know what the interior team did, so they could help out and visa versa. Not only that, I would always make sure that whoever worked on my boat would also know how to drive my boat, regardless of whether you’re a stew, a deckhand or an engineer.

The key benefits of the Intro to Yachting X-Training course is that crew will gain a more in depth knowledge of different areas in yachting, that will then help encourage them to be able to go and apply for a deck/interior position, and not hesitate to do so. The reality is that there’s roles in the industry which are stereotyped to a specific gender. But, things are changing and the crew roles are now more diverse.

Seven Seas Prep - Maritime Training in the US

How can applicants apply for the course?

The first 3 day course will take place in May, with following courses being run during June, July and September. To apply, crew can sign up for the waiting list by clicking here, or contact Seven Sea Prep here

Falcon Tenders ‘Miss Wonderly’ On Show At London Luxury Afloat

Meet “Miss Wonderly”

The Self-Charging Plug-In Hybrid Limousine Yacht Tender

From Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th April 2022, the 10.6m Falcon Tenders ‘Miss Wonderly’ was showcased at Luxury London Afloat. The boating event took place at St Katharine Docks, London, where ‘Miss Wonderly’ took center stage on the Thames.

Sustainability At The Core

Mark Pascoe adds:

“Sustainability is at the core of the Falcon Tenders brand appealing to the younger generation of yacht owners today as well as being relevant to the owners of tomorrow. We manufacture our main structures and small component mouldings using plant-based epoxy resin coming from the latest innovations in bio-based chemistry.

The hull and deck of the Falcon Tenders ‘Miss Wonderly’, limousine tender used lightweight foam sandwich construction for a stiff structure. Faired and painted to superyacht standards in high gloss Black Blue and Signal White, all the components are of the highest quality with attention to serviceability and longevity. The edge pressed bamboo veneers used for the main bulkheads in the interior are also sustainably sourced.

Mark Pascoe adds:

“Our clients demand the finest materials and extremely close attention to detail. And to excel their needs, we have sourced fine Scottish leather for the interior sofas from hides reared through a unique blend of animal husbandry and fertile grazing; combined with interesting textures and details from Foglizzo and Alcantara. The stone flooring is manufactured from lightweight 6mm porcelain, giving the appearance of natural stone. The interior design concept is to create a feeling of relaxation, calm, tranquillity and warmth, while blending subtle baby cane, metals and pearls Majilite fabrics, with Alcantara headlinings. To be complemented with naturally sourced leathers and veneers and stone flooring.

The main intention was to give the feeling of a Superyacht saloon and not a “water taxi”, as so many limousines resemble. This is exemplified by, the sofas which appear to be free standing rather than fixed bench seating; there are occasional corner tables and what appear to be free standing surround sound speakers creating a lounge feeling; and there are a further eight concealed speakers.

In addition, there is a huge central circular skylight feature. This is fitted with compound curved, chemically toughened laminated glass. By doing so, we’re creating an amazing feeling of light and space, with blue feature and warm white cluster lighting. Access to the main saloon is via automated glass sliding doors, fitted with an inflatable seal system to prevent any undesirable wind noise or moisture ingress.”

Refit International: The Leading Marine Engineering and Outfitting Specialists

Refit International has quickly become the leading marine engineering and outfitting specialist in the Superyacht industry. The company now operates globally, working closely with shipyards, applicators, and Captains on some of the most iconic superyachts to date. We recently caught up with Matthew Pidsley, the Managing Director, who discussed the story behind Refit International, but also the importance of the how and the why of hardware installation.

About Refit International:

The team is made up of shipyard and commercial engineers, as well as ex-yacht crew. Located in the UK, the business is run from two locations, one of which is its in-house fabrication facility.

Matthew Pidsley, Managing Director adds:

“Our team remove and install vessel hardware for paint works, overhaul hydraulic systems and fabricate metal. I’d say that 90% of our team are on the tools, the client doesn’t pay for suits. We are predominantly Engineers and Outfitters but cover a range of additional refit services. The Brits make up the majority, but we also have a couple of Italians and Aussies, which keeps the problem solving open-minded and the workplace banter fresh. One of our unique advantages is that almost half of the RI team are ex yacht crew, who reached the point where shore-based life is more appealing than another circumnavigation!

During the refit process, I place a great deal of emphasis on the how and the why of hardware installation – How we do it, but more importantly why we do it the way we do it! Until you’ve been to sea, I don’t believe you can fully appreciate why systems are designed the way they are. In terms of the type of work refit international does, we do a lot of installations, fault finding, and retrofitting. It gives us the edge when all the team has served time at sea.”

“90% of the team are on the tools; the client doesn’t pay for suits.”

Meet the Refit International Team

Behind the shipyard scenes.

RI Vessel Refit and New-Build service:

When it comes down to the vessel refit and new build services, the Marine Engineering and Outfitting team is involved in three core aspects:

Hardware, Caulking, & Glass

-The removal and reinstallation of exterior vessel hardware and associated components for re-sprays and new builds. Refit International work hand-in-hand with deck hardware providers, Harken, providing large amounts of hardware used in their projects.

Auxiliary Hydraulic equipment

-Installation, service, & certification of electromechanical systems such as hydraulic transom doors, Passerelles, Rescue Boat Cranes, Shell doors, load testing, anchoring systems, lifting keels, and Harken Access Rails

Stainless Fabrication & Polishing

-Including stairs, handrails, cowling, anchor pockets, windscreens, bollards, cleats, fairleads, locks, latches, etc.

Over the years, RI has worked with various companies within the yachting industry, such as MGMT Yachts and Harken. Through building these trusted relationships they have established themselves as one of the most reliable teams in their field. They’re approved by Flag and Class on installation procedures, as well as offering a range of Harken-approved installations. As a result of this, they’re one of the few companies that can demonstrate approved load testing and operational certification on their installations worldwide.

Superyacht Refit - Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth

What is it that the team stands by?

RI stands by its exacting and professional standards. Matt and the team are passionate about conveying this to Captains and Owners by offering a 12-month warranty on all their services, as well as a manufacturer’s warranty of 5 years.

In addition to the above, the number of females working in the yachting industry is rapidly rising, and the current employees at Refit are all in favor of driving diversity and change within the industry. For this reason, Matt and the guys are keen for female engineers to step forwards to showcase their skills and join the team.

The leading marine engineering and outfitting specialists have worked on a whole host of iconic Superyachts in the past year – you could probably even recognise a few yourself…  But unfortunately, when the company undertakes work on some vessels, it comes with signing a non-disclosure agreement. This means some details of operations remain largely unknown.

  • CODE41 Watches ran a survey to Fine Watch enthusiasts, proposing 9 colours for the new X41 model bridges. Of which, green and rainbow were chosen. The superior fine watchmakers collaborated with Positive Coating, world recognised Swiss specialists in the decoration of watch components, to customize the Saffire coated watch.

 CODE41 Watches X41 Model - 6th edition

The CODE41 X41 sapphire case:

CODE41 remained loyal to their visions and ambitions to create a fine watchmaking piece that’s impossible to get tired of. There’s no other case out there quite like the 2022 X41 sapphire case. Crafted entirely from sapphire, the X41’s case represents a technical challenge of the highest order. This latest design comes in at a more costly production price, in comparison to a titanium case: 3,600 CHF, compared to 160 CHF; in other words, 22 times more expensive!

But there are reasons for this. With it being a more complex and transparent design to meet the evergrowing desires of fine watch enthusiasts, the process of shaping the X41 case took a little longer – Ie, the process of machining, polishing, drilling, and assembling. The Swiss company wasn’t allowing for any errors in design or cutting!

CODE41 Watches value the authenticity of their community

The X41 is the perfect demonstration of the strong demand among fans of mechanical beauty for an authentic Fine Watchmaking industry. Specifically one focused on creation, quality, and the virtuosity of Swiss watchmakers. In this way, CODE41 Watches frees this exceptional piece from subjective luxury values. This is in order to focus on the very essence of watchmaking.

Through superior expertise, the Swiss brand is able to produce luxury watches at value for money. But the main focus behind their watches is the journey the CODE41 community is being offered. At each stage of the project, members of the public vote and have their say. Thus, they participate in the design of future CODE41 watch models. In addition, throughout production, they witness the birth of their watch in a photo and on video. As well as, through visits to the Swiss watchmaking workshops. Overall, CODE41 values the importance of each member of their community and the heart of the creative process.

Edible Flowers: How Yacht Chefs Can Get The Most Out Of Them

Edible flowers are always best when picked fresh from the garden, early in the morning, washed and dry gently, and used immediately as they will taste and look their best right after they have opened. But you have to remember that not all plants are edible. It’s important to remember that some flowers are poisonous so make sure to make a positive identification of each variety before using it to ensure your safety.

In the following lines let’s see together some of the edible flowers you can find on the French Riviera that you can use to prepare a fresh and colourful dish.

Maison Del Gusto Yacht provisioning - How to get the most out of edible flowers

BORAGE

These beautiful blue star-shaped flowers from the borage plant add beauty to your plate. It tastes a bit like cucumber and some people describe it as a sweet honey taste which is why it is used frequently in salads. They are also delicious in lemonade and cocktails like gin and tonic. In European folk medicine, Borage leaves and flowers are used as a diuretic, sore throat aid, and natural remedy for exhaustion as it contains vitamins A and C, antioxidants that boost the immune system.

OXALIS

Oxalis leaves taste lemony and bright. This plant is actually a kind of sourgrass and is often referred to as wood sorrel. Its citrusy flavor is due to high levels of oxalic acid, also found in vegetables like broccoli and spinach, and vitamin C. While edible, Oxalis leaves should only be consumed in moderation due to the fact that oxalic acid can inhibit calcium absorption, and people who are prone to kidney stones or who have gout or rheumatism should avoid it entirely.

LAVENDER FROM PROVENCE

Lavender’s flowers have a lovely, intensely sweet flavor. You can use it with rich and fatty foods because it cuts through and lifts the overall flavor. Or, you can use them baked in scones, added to teas, candied for cakes, or to dress up salads.

ROSES

The leaf, bud, petal, and hip of rose plants are edible and can be used in many recipes. Depending on the variety of rose plants, flavors range from fruit like strawberries and green apples to herb-like minty and spicy. The more fragrant the flower, the more flavor it offers. Roses have been used in dishes such as soups, salads, candies, and condiments.

The Rose petals are delicious in desserts, jellies, syrups, butters, and teas. Rosehips have been used in jams, wines, teas, sauces and soups. The rosebuds can be mixed with honey or tea. While the leaves are often used to make tea similar to black tea. A simple internet search and rose recipes are endless.

COURGETTES

Courgette flowers are a beautiful seasonal treat. Savoured by foodies for stuffing, these delicate-looking flowers are actually quite robust and hold up to being deep-fried and stuffed; however, the best way to prepare them is in a beautiful and colourful salad and eat them raw.

Important note:

always consider pollen allergies when working and cooking edible flowers. If you suffer from severe pollen allergies, even the slightest bit of pollen can trigger a reaction. It’s also important to note that you should always clearly state this on the list of ingredients as a possible allergen to keep your guests safe.

US Virgin Islands Allow Entry For Yacht Crew Without B1 / B2 Visas

 US Virgin Islands

In light of the recent announcement on the 2022 updates regarding US Virgin Islands B1 / B2 Visas for yacht crew, here’s all you need to know about the latest travel rules:

Temporary changes to the entry requirements are currently in place for the U.S. Virgin Islands directly related to professional vessel crew without B1/B2 or C-1/D visas.  The parole program, was identified by the US Customs and Border Protection (USVI Customs Zone) as the Significant Public Benefit Parole or “SPBP”. This will allow vessels manned by professional crew without B1/B2 or C-1/D visas to cruise the US Virgin Islands for up to six months.

US Virgin Islands allow entry for yacht crew without B1 / B2 Visas

Temporary Pilot Program

For the next six months, yachts seeking to enter the US Virgin Islands can now apply for the parole program, which is purposed for a single entry. Meanwhile, multiple entry is possible, it is not the general intent of the program. Also, entry to the United States, Puerto Rico, or Puerto Rican waters is not permitted for paroled crew members visiting the US Virgin Islands.

The parole program is applied for at entry. Along with a $75.00USD fee per person payable to the USCBP officer, with each crew member required to show his or her seaman’s book.  Each re-entry thereafter requires a fresh, new application with the same requirements.

The US Customs and Border Patrol released this information just a few short days after the US Virgin Islands Department of Health lifted its general mask mandate.

St. Thomas, USVI Specific

“This is distinctly welcome news for many professionally crewed vessels cruising throughout the IGY Marinas network. We cater to large yachts world-wide. The SPBP program allows vessels to visit the US Virgin Islands who may not have previously done so. This is likely due to the difficulty of obtaining B1/B2 or C-1/D visas.” -Phil Blake, CMM, Marina General Manager for Yacht Haven Grande Marina.

It’s important to note that yachts over 300 GRT remain subject to normal US Coast Guard requirements. As well as, APHIS requirements for all size vessels.

*The SPBP parole program is only available at three locations in St. Thomas. Edward Blyden Customs and Border Protection terminal, the St. John CBP office, and IGY Marina’s Yacht Haven Grande Marina’s CBP office.
