Barcelona Announced as 37th America’s Cup Host

Barcelona has been announced as the host venue for the 37th America’s Cup. The event, which is one of the biggest in sailing, is coming to the Spanish city in September and October of 2024. As well as being exciting news for the whole city, the announcement is also due to benefit many local marinas, which will berth numerous Superyachts expected to visit the area during this busy time.

Port Vell

Perhaps the most well-known marina in Barcelona is Port Vell. The marina has the facilities to accommodate some of the largest superyachts in the world.

Boats of up to 180m can moor here in a stylish and well-provided environment. There are two parts to Port Vell Marina: a cruise and ferry port and a fishing port. The grand mall, Maremagnum, which houses the biggest aquarium in Europe is also located on the premises.

The marina has 48 berths for superyachts ranging between 25 and 130 metres including a 24-hour security service. Initial works were completed in the Autumn of 2019 resulting in a superyacht Technical Service Centre trading as Pendennis Vilanova, spanning across a 30,000sqm shipyard equipped with both a 200t and 620t travel hoist for performing repair and maintenance works.

5 Gin Bars To visit In Barcelona

The MYBA Charter Show is fast approaching and when you think of Barcelona, “gin” may not be the first spirit that you would think of drinking. However, the Catalonian Capital has built up quite the love over recent years for this age-old British favourite, and is now home to some of the best gin bars in the world. We’ve whittled the extensive list down for crew and guests, to 5 Gin Bars To visit in Barcelona:

1. XIX Bar, Sant Antoni

#gin is the new #black #xixbar #barcelona

A post shared by Andrew Perez (@dot_perez) on Feb 18, 2017 at 2:46pm PST

For those who crave a little authenticity, this old dairy is one of the most specialised gin bars in Barcelona. XIX (pronounced “chicks”) bar boasts over 80 types of gin, and the options for mixes are endless. Choose your tonic, and then add anything from cinnamon and ginger to mint and cucumber. Attached to the bar is its own Gin Coner Shop where visitors can receive advice on products that will best suit their tastes.

2. Solange, Eixample

Solange cocktail bar Barcelona.

A post shared by a little river (@littlewitch007) on Nov 10, 2016 at 11:31am PST

This bar has been described as “the place that James Bond would visit if he came to town”. If that’s not reason enough for you to make a trip, how about the fact that it is run by a family of mixologists, and that they make a fantastic martini.

3. Bar Eclipse, W Hotel

A post shared by W Barcelona (@w_barcelona) on Feb 8, 2017 at 12:00pm PST

Bar Eclipse may not specialise in gin, though they certainly serve up some excellent cocktails. Either way, that right there is arguably one of the best views of Barcelona. Enough said!

4. Torre Rosa, San Andreu

A post shared by Coctelería Torre Rosa (@torrerosabcn) on Nov 2, 2015 at 6:34am PST

Torre Rosa is one of those venues that you have to see to believe. It is truly unique in its beauty and Time Out describe it as “possibly one of the most perfect places in Barcelona”. The house that the bar is situated in was formerly owned by one of the “Americanos”, AKA Catalans who left for the US then returned to Barcelona to spend their wealth. Head barman Jordi Reig knows his cocktails inside and out, and the outdoor terrace offers the perfect moon gazing opportunity for star-crossed lovers.

5. Hotel The Serras, Ciutat Vella

Evening ? ? ? #theserrasbarcelona #elsueñobcn

A post shared by The Serras Barcelona (@theserrasbarcelona) on Feb 24, 2017 at 10:17am PST

This hotel may not be a specialised gin bar, however, it does offer some beautiful sea views whilst you enjoy a gin-based cocktail on its stylish mezzanine. It also has a rooftop infinity pool and Michelin star restaurant, which are two more reasons why it qualifies in our list of the best gin bars in Barcelona. Even better, it’s also within walking distance of the marina.

Will you be taking a trip to any of the 5 gin bars in Barcelona while at the MYBA charter show?

You Can Now Buy A Yacht With Cryptocurrency

You Can Now Buy A Yacht With Cryptocurrency

Yacht Cryptocurrency payments are becoming an increasingly viable option in our modern world; from works of art to property, an ever-growing number of purchases are possible with popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The superyacht industry has picked up on this trend and many prolific companies are starting to realise the value of offering less traditional payment options for clients. Join us whilst we explore the current cryptocurrency trend in the superyacht industry.

What Is Cryptocurrency?

yacht cryptocurrency - how does it work?
Credit: Market Watch

Put simply, Cryptocurrency is a new type of money that is decentralised and not controlled by any organisation or government but instead traded peer-to-peer. This means that anyone can send any number of Bitcoins to a business or another person in an instant, and each transaction is recorded on a publicly accessible ‘ledger.’ To enhance security and resist manipulation, the ledger use blockchain technology; the currency is backed by immutable math rather than banks or governments. Cryptocurrencies are private, secure, and efficient, which is why they are so popular.

How Long Have Yacht Cryptocurrency Payments Been Possible?

One of the first companies to introduce cryptocurrency as a method of yacht payment is Denison Yachting. Back in 2016, the company made cryptocurrency payments possible for customers wanting to purchase a yacht. It was a success, and in 2018 Denison decided to venture further into the crypto world by extending this payment system to yacht charters. The idea to extend Crypto to chartering came after Bob Denison chartered a boat using Bitcoin back in 2017. Worldwide yachting is another early adopter of Crypto payments, with eight Crypto bookings since 2018. Amongst the boats booked are 39m Oceanfast Oculus, 38m Heesen Sea Axis and 40m Splendor Kashmir. Speaking to Boat International, Jason Carter of Worldwide Boat commented “Overall, cryptocurrency represents 0.5% of all global wealth now. So it makes sense for to become part of this equation”.

How Many Companies Offer Crypto Payments?

These days, more and more companies are hopping on the Crypto train. In the past few months, many companies such as Monaco Yachts and Helm have made Cryptocurrency payments possible. It’s a smart move to make sure they stay on top of the latest trends and don’t fall behind the competitors. Amongst the recent Crypto companies are Dynamiq Yachts, which recently announced the addition of Cryptocurrency as a new payment method for the financing of their new build yachts. In other news, the popular charter vessel M/Y Loon announced recently that guests can now charter using Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, ETH, BCH and DOGE.

Looking at the overall trends and demand for Crypto purchasing options, it looks like the new payment method will keep gaining traction. Although industry giants such as Lurssen and Feadship haven’t yet got on board with Crypto, it can’t be long before they too take the plunge.

The 35m expedition-style yacht ‘Project Fox’ which is currently in build at Pendennis’ Falmouth facility moves further towards its 2023 completion date. The vessel features interior and exterior styling from UK based design firm Q London. The UK based design firm is putting an emphasis on a neutral interior, acting as a blank canvas that will appeal to a wide range of potential owners. By focusing on “clean lines on the outside of the boat to run through the interior”, buyers will then be able to “come on board with any artwork, soft furnishings, light fittings and ultimately create a personal stamp themselves,” commented James Ratcliffe, managing partner of Q London.

MB92 La Ciotat Superyacht Shipyard Closer To Completion

MB92 La Ciotat, France’s leading superyacht refit shipyard, announced that a major milestone has been reached in the construction of the platform, maintaining the shipyard’s schedule for the opening of the facility as planned this autumn for yachts up to 115-metres in length.

MB92 Superyacht Refit Shipyard

What’s new?

Following the delivery last summer of the main elements of the structure and 9 months of engineering work on-site, the Matière-Bardex team has now completed the complex task of assembling and moving the lifting platform to its final position. At 100 metres in length, equivalent to a football pitch, and 20 metres wide, the platform weighs 1,100 tonnes and required a team of 20 people and 3 hours to carry out the exceptional manoeuvre of moving the shiplift structure and 2 days for the final installation in the concrete recess.

The innovative Bardex lifting system which includes 20 chain jacks is now being installed and features a hydraulic ram and chain system expressly designed to increase safety and reduce maintenance.

MB92 La Ciotat Shipyard

The Installation of the world’s largest artificial harbour-based fish nursery:

The platform’s docks have been equipped with a biomimetic solution supplied by the company Seaboost. Based on the complex structure of Posidonia seagrass, this solution creates an effective, integrated, and safe environment that will encourage the reproduction of local marine species.

In addition to the nursery, La Ciotat Shipyards, the local port authority, have administered an exemplary project, implementing numerous environmental measures during the construction phase such as soil decontamination, reuse of materials on-site, installation of a double bubble curtain, and anti-sediment curtains to protect cetaceans and water quality.

Mathieu Bauden, MB92 La Ciotat Facilities Director comments:

“This is a key stage in the delivery of the 4300t platform which leaves us well-positioned as we enter the final six months of the project. The next important steps are the delivery of the control building, the installation of all energy networks, reception of the transfer system, the cradles, and final testing followed by certification by Lloyds this summer.”

Vincent Escallier, Commercial Director of MB92 La Ciotat added:

“We are all looking forward to the imminent opening of our new facility and this latest accomplishment brings us one step closer. It’s an extraordinary piece of infrastructure that complements the wide range of lifting options available to clients of our shipyard.”

SuperYachtsMonaco Sells M/Y Oryx using Bitpay – Yacht Broker Interview

An Interview with Juan Andrade, the yacht broker who represented SuperYachtsMonaco on the sale of Benetti Yachts 40m M/Y ORYX using Cryptocurrency

SuperYachtsMonaco is proud to announce they are now accepting Bitpay as a form of payment. The 40.2m Benetti superyacht ORYX was recently sold for €9.9m through the Monaco brokerage, using a cryptocurrency payment provider. Simon Goldsworthy and Hans Van Doornmalen of Edmiston represented the seller, whilst standing in for the buyer during negotiations was SuperYachtMonacos, Juan Andrade.

Accepting yacht payments through Bitpay is a new feature for SuperYachtsMonaco. The desire to purchase and charter yachts using cryptocurrency is ever-increasing, with more and more companies adopting new technologies to facilitate this demand.

“The ability to accept cryptocurrency enables SuperYachtsMonaco to attract new customers and sales by tapping the massive crypto marketplace,” said Juan Andrade. “Bitpay manages the entire process and makes it easy to receive crypto from the customer and adapt their approach to each client’s personal situation.”

The yacht itself features an interior updated in 2018/19 courtesy of Francois Zuretti, with an exterior design by Stefano Righini. ORYX yacht is an excellent showcase of the popular Benetti Classic Supreme model and has timeless appeal. The vessel accommodates up to 10 guests across five cabins, including a full-beam Owner’s suite with his and her’s bathroom on the main deck forward.

An exclusive interview with Juan Andrade

1. When did SuperYachtsMonaco decide to introduce Bitpay as a form of payment for yacht sales, yacht charter, and yacht management?

Juan: “Back in September last year, the client approached me to explain that he wanted to purchase his first yacht through SuperYachtsMonaco, but he wanted to pay using Bitpay. From there, I said ok and went and did my research on the logistics around cryptocurrency to see my options, which is when I approached Bitpay.”

2. How long did it take you to set up Bitpay?

Juan: “I’d say about a month, to a month and a half. The process was quite straightforward and by around November, we were ready to move forward with the transaction process. Still to this day, I’m not a cryptocurrency expert however, I now know a lot more and it’s opened a whole new market for the Superyacht Industry. ”

3. What are the key benefits for a client to go down the route of purchasing a yacht using cryptocurrency?

Juan: “I think each benefit is different for every client as they will have their own reasons to support their decision to buy a yacht in crypto, rather than fiat money. But, for SuperYachtsMonaco brokerage, the main benefit is that in regards to the transaction process, the banks aren’t involved which makes the process a lot quicker.

4. Did you find any challenges along the journey?

Juan: “The process was simple, and the only challenge we found was not many people understand or trust cryptocurrency. People still have a lot of questions about Bitcoin and the culture around them, but the process on behalf of SuperYachtsMonaco is fully understood and easily done.”

5. Will the yacht be managed using Cryptocurrency?

Juan: “Without commenting on a specific yacht, I do know that there are vessels out there that now manage the whole yacht using Bitpay, right the way down to crew salaries. It will only be a matter of time before we see this occurring on more yachts around the globe”

5. Will SuperYachtsMonaco continue to offer Bitpay as a form of digital payment for their clients?

Georgia, Head of Marketing at SuperYachtsMonaco comments:

“100%. We’ve now developed our website, with an added landing page specifically for Bitpay. We are now ready to accept almost all cryptocurrencies for sales and charters. Since the sale of Benettis 40m M/Y ORYX, we’ve also had another client charter a yacht with us using digital assets.”

ISA Yachts Amarcord
The exterior design of Project Amarcord.

Nuvolari Lenard’s mission is to style the outside of the superyacht in a way that captures ISA Yachts’ blend of beauty and strength. With this in mind, Amarcord features a sophisticated and futuristic exterior design, with clean lines and a sharp profile.
