Every Vessel Needs A Sentini Marine Bespoke Documentation Suite Onboard

Sentini Marine has created a Documentation Suite for the Superyacht industry – From bespoke technical manuals covering every machine, system, and operation onboard, to pocket-sized captain’s handbooks. These interlink with their Training Suite which focuses on the implementation of the technical and safety information in the manuals, through a testing and familiarisation app and VR training.

Sentini Marine provides vessels and crew with:

  • Bespoke technical operations manuals to Superyachts covering every machine, system, and operation onboard.
  • COMING SOON: FATHOM  – Sentini Marines App-based testing is undergoing a rebrand and will be launching soon… The app was created to challenge crew to read and understand the technical and safety aspects of the vessel’s manuals. The questions on the app can link to a specific section of their vessels bespoke manual. This way, a crew member can find the answer, should they not know it. The central purpose of the app is to familiarise the crew with their knowledge of the manuals, rather than requiring them to sit and read through the manuals.
  •  SM VR Training suite – This is separate from the app. The Sentini Team are working with V360 to build virtual reality engineering modules for marine colleges. These modules will give students the chance to work on safety-critical tasks which cannot be replicated on a college workbench.
  • As well as this, the marine engineering company have another exciting app on the horizon – A Digital Training Record Book. Development is currently on hold, but keep up to date here for further details.
  • Procurement – They work with a select number of vessels to provide spare parts and consumables, in which they pride themselves on excellent customer service.

What is the importance of technical documentation for vessels?:

Too often yachts are delivered with no technical documentation at all (which is shocking considering the size and technical complexities of these vessels), or poor drawings which aren’t up-to-date or accurate. Crew turnaround can be high on some yachts, especially busy charter boats that can be demanding on crew. Imagine a new engineer joining just before an Atlantic crossing, the life of the crew and the expensive vessel is in his or her hands. Being handed an accurate, easy-to-understand document that covers the operation of the entire vessel is a huge benefit. Couple this with an app that tests and highlights gaps in knowledge of that specific vessel, and increases further the safety of the vessel and crew.

On yachts, machinery is not usually fitted to the manufacturer’s specifications, instead, they are squeezed into spaces dictated by the accommodation requirements of the owner, often resulting in changes being made to a system. These changes, and others like them, are what makes each vessel unique, and what makes accurate technical documentation so important.

A clear and concise system drawing that has all unnecessary build information removed and the machinery placed in the correct physical location is a usable, useful document. And easy to read in an emergency. Having a system in place like the Document Suite, with regular updates, means the vessel has a single source of information that will remain current, and be a tool for the vessel’s lifetime.

To break it down:

NEW CREW – Joining a large vessel due for departure can be a daunting task, especially when no operating instructions are provided. Being handed a Sentini Marine Technical manual containing accurate systems diagrams and up-to-date operating instructions increases safety for the vessel and crew when operating the vessel.

EACH VESSEL IS UNIQUE – With each year, larger and more machinery dense yachts are launched, each one a delicate balance of engineering prowess and luxurious living. Yet this balance is usually tipped in favour of modern open living spaces for the owners to relax and entertain in, meaning machinery is tightly packed into spaces requiring the systems to deviate from the manufacturer’s specifications. These deviations, and countless others like them, are what make each vessel unique and what makes accurate technical documentation so important.

Sentini Marine Bespoke Documentation for yachts

Added benefits of Sentini Marines bespoke technical documentation for vessels:

  • By providing high quality technical documentation, owners demonstrate to the crew that they care about their safety, giving them all the tools they need to operate the vessel well.
  • Digital copies can be marked up and job lists created, to send to the shipyard ahead of yard periods.
  • Refit and downtime is reduced.
  • The yacht runs on schedule without breakdowns due to an operational error or machinery malfunction.

What’s included in each yachts bespoke manual?

The manuals are designed to be all-encompassing, eliminating the need to reference each individual machinery manufacturers manuals or build drawings, which won’t be completely accurate anyway. They contain everything that is needed for the yacht’s operation, maintenance and repair.

  •  System Descriptions and Diagrams – All systems are redrafted, correcting any errors that have been found post-delivery, in a colour format, laid out with all equipment in its physical location onboard. All unnecessary information from the original drawings will be removed, further clearing up the drawing and making it easier to follow. The drawings will also be supplied in digital format allowing them to be edited and commented on, making them a tool for planning for dry docks and fault finding. The content will be verified as correct with a vessel survey before the final version is issued.
  • Operating Instructions – clear and concise operational instructions including; an introduction describing the system and its equipment, details of how it operates, instructions and basic maintenance, and any cautions and warnings that may cause injury or failure/damage to equipment.
  • Tables and Illustrations – The manuals are completed with expertly drawn illustrations, giving further clarity to operational instructions, and easy to reference valve tables.
  •  A Maintenance Package – Having a system in place like the Document Suite, with regular updates, means the vessel has a single source of information which will remain current, and be a tool for the vessel’s lifetime.

NOTE – Sentini Marine’s manuals can be maintained annually like any other equipment onboard.

Technical documentation FAQs:

Who are the manuals written by?

A team of highly trained and experienced professionals. Sentini Marine partners with WMT Marine, they have been developing operating procedures for the marine industry and their manuals are used by all the major players worldwide (Carnival, RCCL, NCL, BP, and Maersk). These authors include Master Mariners, Chief Engineers, Chief Officers, Deck Officers, and ETOs, and their manuals are on over 1000 vessels.

What format do they come in?

The main product is a ring bound file containing all sections of the manual. It is also supplied in a digital format which can be used for sharing information with shipyards for warranty work and repairs. Small sections can also be requested to be made into small pocketbooks to put the information directly into the hands of the crew.

Can the manuals be updated are yard time/refit?

Yes, once changes are reported and verified, affected pages will be updated and reissued, either as a one-off project or as part of a maintenance package. Documentation kept in a diligent manner will ensure that your vessel always has a unified set of up-to-date instructions, illustrations, and drawings on board.

Can the manuals be designed with the yachts colours and logo?

Yes, a style guide is created and agreed with the yacht so that it fits in perfectly on the bridge or quest areas.

What happens if some of the crew don’t speak english as their first language?

Sentini can provide manuals in any language required by your vessels crew or management. Our experts understand that technical translation requires an in-depth knowledge of technical terminology specific to the marine industry. Sentini Marine only uses professionally qualified, full-time translators who have extensive industry or engineering backgrounds to ensure the
translation meets the exact requirements and correct technical terminology in the preferred language.

Additional services Sentini Marine Provide for Vessels, Captains and crew:

COMING SOON  – The FATHOM App

Sentini Marine Fathom App - Digital saftey training for yacht crew

What is the Fathom – Familiarisation and testing app?:

Across the industry, crew are required to learn all safety-critical aspects contained within their expertly compiled manuals, yet quite often this is not part of everyday yacht life, but last minute before a flag visit. Sentini Marine discovered that there is a missing link in the manual’s potential impact and actual impact, that link is the Fathom app. Through a series of multiple choice, vessel-specific questions (which link into key sections of vessel’s ISM, SOLAS or technical manuals), crew knowledge is tested, forcing them to consult the vessel manuals to find answers they are unsure of. In doing this, knowledge is increased, and gaps are highlighted to senior crew, instructing what individual or crew-wide training is needed.

The familiarisation section of the app is aimed at making the familiarisation process of new and established crew, effective, efficient, and measurable, taking pressure off senior crew.

How it works:

  • Sentini Marine builds a bank of approximately 200 questions based on the vessel’s manuals; multiple choice questions with three viable wrong answers to ensure crew is challenged into finding the correct answer, not hazarding a guess.
  • Each crew member has their own log in, questions are set based on their rank and responsibilities.
  •  Near Field Communication tags are placed around the vessel; these are used as familiarisation check points, a means of accessing specific information on a piece of machinery, or as part of a physical familiarisation test.
  • Test results are sent to senior crew for them to see underperforming crew members, and pinpointing training needs, and underperforming questions, which may require additional training for the entire crew.
  • Senior crew set the test frequency, high performing crew are rewarded by being tested less.

Award Winning Marina Port Vell Gallery Remodel Revealed

Inside the Marina Port Vell Gallery

The transformation of the Marina Port Vell gallery illustrates the commitment of the marina to improve the guest experience and offer service excellence throughout to provide the ultimate sea-inspired meetings and events building in Barcelona. The careful interior design project has utilised the surrounding Mediterranean sea as the key influence, reflecting the concepts of fluidity, elegance, and quality that characterize MPV.

Barcelona, 21 June 2022. Marina Port Vell Barcelona, a leading Superyacht infrastructure in the Mediterranean is delighted to unveil the remodeled facilities of its flagship building, the award-winning Marina Port Vell gallery. The marinas commitment to this careful interior design project has involved the transformation of its entrance hall. As well as,  the creation of new spaces available for meetings, with the aim of improving the customer experience and consolidating the excellence of the service it currently provides.

In the words of Marta Tuñí, Director of Marketing and Communication at Marina Port Vell Barcelona:

“We wanted to convey a greater warmth and exclusivity to be able to offer a truly unique experience, and clearly we have achieved it”.

Allegory of the sea as a gateway to The Gallery.

The objective of the interior design project, led by the Barcelona interior design studio, Alfons & Damián, has been to convert the hall of The Gallery into the calling card of Marina Port Vell, transmitting the concepts of elegance and quality that characterize
the marina. Entering the glass building is a circular walnut bench with camel-colored upholstery that houses a lush natural kentia in the center. Likewise, simulating a wave, as an allegory of the sea, we find another bench with different uses: on the one hand, it
functions as a waiting area and, on the other hand, it becomes a small meeting space as it is accompanied by a round travertine table and a hanging lamp. All of this is accompanied by the floor covered with Hermitage marble that provides a point of brightness and light to the space, giving a sophisticated appearance to the hall of the marina. In the background, behind a travertine marble bookcase and glass shelves, designed expressly for this project, is a meeting room.

Inside the Marina Port Vell Gallery VIP room: Marine Port Vell Gallery - VIP meeting room

Presided over by a 6.5-meter travertine table, the room is crowned by a suspended slab, upholstered with terracotta-colored acoustic fabric. These, in turn, are projected on the floor like a large carpet of geometric pieces of different matching colors. This table is surrounded by Rely and Tradition chairs, 16 in total. Perfect for holding meetings or boards of directors in a unique environment.

Marta Tuñí explains that “this VIP room is perfectly prepared to host meetings in a unique environment in the city, we are sure
that it will be a great success among companies in Barcelona” The room is rented for hours or days.

In one of the corners, following the organic forms that define the project, a large support cabinet, which houses a bar cabinet and even a service cart, to be able to attend to meeting attendees. Natural linen curtains allow giving more privacy to the room. Whilst creating opacity, thus always allowing visual contact with the port and the sea. This space also has state-of-the-art audiovisual systems by Bang & Olufsen. On the one hand, Beovision Harmony: is a television experience that takes the decoration of any space to a higher level, while enveloping it in impeccable sound.

Like a butterfly spreading its wings, two meticulously crafted oak and aluminum decks fan out while a fine screen rises to allow the viewer to enjoy an unprecedented view. Beovision Harmony is a spectacular piece of design that once again exemplifies Bang
& Olufsen’s uncompromising approach to design, craftsmanship, and sound efficiency.

In addition, the space features the new Beoplay A9, the latest edition of the firms’ iconic speaker, widely recognized as one of the most distinctive and successful integrations of sound and beauty on the market to date.

MB92 LA Ciotat won the tender for the occupation of the 200m dry dock

MB92 La Ciotat, is one of France’s leading Superyacht refit shipyards. Monday the 27th June, the company announced they won the tender for the MB92 La Ciotat 200m dry dock and related areas in the La Ciotat shipyard. The shipyard has carried out 44 projects in the MB92 La Ciotat 200m dry dock since 2017, confirming its ability to attract and develop the over 80 metre market.

MB92 LA Ciotat 200m Dry Dock | Superyacht Content

Ben Mennem, CEO of MB92 La Ciotat, commented:

“We are delighted with this decision which will allow us to consolidate our position as France’s leading refitter. As well as allowing us to undertake major investments to further develop our business. A development which will continue to integrate respect for people and the planet.”

Major investments in modernising the infrastructure

The new 20-year occupancy agreement will allow MB92 to undertake numerous investments aimed at modernising the dry dock and nefs B and C. Investments of close to €2O million are planned during this period. They will largely be focused on infrastructure improvements, reducing environmental impact and ensuring the safety of workers on the site.

By the end of this year, the company will have invested more than €60 million alongside La Ciotat Shipyards in their development since 2017. This is including €45 million from the MB92 Group for the 4300t shiplift, which will be launched in September 2022. This new facility will be able to accommodate 6/7 yachts up to 115 metres in length. It’s an ideal complement to the existing infrastructure, enabling the group to cover all segments of the Superyacht market (yachts over 24 metres in length).

Supporting employment and the local community

“Our workforce has been growing since 2017! A progression that is directly linked to the MB92 La Ciotat 200m dry dock operation,” explains Jean-Marc Bolinger, CEO of the MB92 Group.  “The continuity of its use and the launch of the 4300t lift in September will enable us to continue to develop activity on the site. Both within MB92 and for subcontracting companies, the majority of which are local businesses.”

About 70% of the turnover allocated to subcontractors each year concerns La Ciotat and South of France based companies, giving them welcome visibility. Consequently, the development of the shipyard will contribute to improving the skill-base of the region’s flourishing maritime industry.

Pepe García-Aubert, MB92 Group Chairman, concludes:

“MB92 La Ciotat is firmly rooted locally, with deep ties to the sea and a strong maritime heritage. Being able to offer career opportunities to young talent and working alongside local training organisations will help to strengthen this link with our traditions. But also encourage the professionalisation of our sector. The development of the site represents great prospects for all. Bringing a lasting positive impact to the town and the region as a whole.”

Superyacht Captains Share 3 Key Yacht Crew Management Tips

Crew turnover is at an all-time high, and whilst everyone is discussing the reasons behind this, we’re revealing 3 key yacht crew management tips. After all, keeping your crew happy, while making sure you get the most out of them plays a major factor in being a great leader. This not only goes for Superyacht Captains, but also for chief officers, heads of departments, and yacht management teams.

We spoke to a handful of Captains to narrow down what skills are most important as a leader, so you can assess if you have what it takes to be a great yacht captain:

1. Communication is Key

Just like any working environment, good communication is a key skill to managing productivity and maintaining working relationships. Whether they’re senior crew or junior crew, a good captain will regularly speak with their crew and build a trustworthy relationship where yachties feel at ease to speak about certain situations/problems on board. By investing your time into the crew, the more effectively they can execute tasks.

Captain Tristan Mortlock elaborates:

“Whilst not on charter we had daily meetings before work started. Everybody had an opportunity to talk about anything they wanted: Any issues, ideas to improve the running of the boat or daily tasks, things they liked and things they didn’t. By giving all crew members a voice, they felt heard and valued, improving the overall morale onboard. I’ve always said that a good crew have great channels of communications.”

2. Support and empower your Crew

Have you ever been in a job where you felt you were putting your all in, and receiving nothing back, not even the slightest gratitude? It sucks. Now, compare that to a situation where you’ve done something good and someone has recognised you for it and shown their appreciation – it made you feel good, right?

The point we’re getting at here is that no matter how high up the hierarchy you are, you should always value others and the work they’re doing. The main reason is that they’ll not only want to continue working for you but will also work harder because when people feel appreciated, they thrive.

“I speak to everyone the same way, whether he’s the garbage man or the president of a university” – Albert Einstein

Yacht crew management tips | Captain Luke Hammond | Superyacht Content|

To further extend, Captain Luke Hammond shares his advice on yacht crew management tips:

“I think there are more than enough stories of people saying that yachting would be great without crew. But, in retrospect, it’s the crew that make or break any good yachting program.

Managing people is a hard enough task. But to elevate that to living and working together 24/7 can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Looking from the outside in, I don’t think enough credit goes to those Yacht Captains that maintain a happy safe crew.

Managing crew is fairly simple, as you can’t rule from the top. You have to give the power to the crew, but have them understand that the Captain has final say. And trying to implement procedures when it’s not wanted, doesn’t work. They just get forgotten, neglected, or worse off, people lie. Which isn’t the type of behavior or environment you want to live and work in.

I find that empowering the crew to make decisions (of which you already know the outcome), gives people a sense of empowerment. It allows them to be a part of the discussion. By giving ideas, they feel it’s their idea and they’ll work harder to maintain the status quo.

Another is direction, or better yet, purpose. Everyone is there to make money and travel. However, without purpose or direction, they wander. A clear outline of their role, but also the steps to how to move forward to their next role is important for a captain to make them aware of.

I always give people time lines… eg after X number of years you should have learnt what’s necessary and then it’s time to move on and learn from someone else. No one is getting fired, but if they realise that you as the Captain and the boat actually care, they stick around much longer.

We all started at the bottom with dreams and hopes. No one is bolted to the yacht, so they can come and go should they choose to. By empowering crew to make the right choices means you get the most out of them. They then go onto their next role with far more self-confidence.”

3. Make sure your crew are enjoying themselves

To conclude our three yacht crew management tips, let’s talk about the importance of enjoying your job. There’s nothing worse than being in a job you hate, working for someone that you also, hate. Put yourself in the shoes of a crew member that’s working 14+ hours a day, for a Captain who’s never once spoken to them about anything, apart from doing their job. Let us tell you now… You won’t be retraining your crew for the long haul.

Captain Louis Simon explains the importance of being “an upright and fair-play Captain”:

“First of all, it is essential to be an upright and fair-play captain. By giving to your crew, the crew themselves will give back to you.

In fact, when you are too strict with your crew in terms of permission or time off, the latter will slip through your hands quickly. On the other hand, when you manage to reconcile work with time off, your crew follows you from boat to boat. Like a real family.

I also think that we’re in an activity called in ‘French pleasure commercial boat’. Meaning we have to enjoy ourselves in what we do. Therefore, it is essential that the crew feel good and that they have a smile. Because, a disgruntled crew is a showcase of the captain’s management and the customers see this directly.

We are here to provide quality service to customers, as well as entertain them. And as I often say: “you don’t have to be serious to do a good job”

It is essential to keep a hierarchy and that everyone stays in their place and at their position. But also, that the respect that relates to it is present because otherwise, it would be anarchy. However, to consolidate the bonds between the crew, it is important to share moments together (restaurants for example). By doing this, it shows them that we are there for work, but that we remain human also – although there are limits.”

New Cruising Regulations Introduced in South Pacific

New South Pacific cruising and charter regulations have been published. The changes allow yacht crews to work tax-free in New Zealand for up to two years. The New Zealand Marine Industry Association (NZ Marine) has announced that the four main South Pacific yachting centres have agreed to loosen regulations, which will take effect in August 2022.

Under the new Temporary Import Entry (TIE) laws, foreign-flagged superyachts will be allowed to cruise each country’s seas for a minimum of two years on a revolving basis. Australia, Fiji, French Polynesia, and New Zealand collaborated to implement new TIE regulations. These will go into effect after the final easing of pandemic-related restrictions.

Yachts can visit Tahiti for up to 60 months

“Technically the various countries got alignment with (TIE) periods and charter two years ago. However, due to Covid lockdowns, it is only from this August that visiting yachts can enter the South Pacific countries using the new relaxed rules of longer stay and chartering in all four countries.” – Peter Busfield, CEO of NZ Marine.

NZ Marine announced that a visiting yacht may now remain in New Zealand for up to 24 months without having to be legally imported; guests just need to request a TIE certificate from New Zealand customs ahead of arrival. When entering ports in New Zealand under the TIE certificate, superyachts exceeding 500GT will require the services of a pilot.

Crew can work in New Zealand tax-free for up to two years

During the TIE duration, all items, equipment, and services acquired for yachts in the nation are tax-free. This includes berthage fees, repairs, and refitting work. Yacht crew are also exempt from paying tax if they are employed by a non-New Zealand person or corporation and have not spent more than 365 days in the previous two years in the nation

The news signals a positive step forward for the nations, which have been subject to some of the strictest Covid restrictions seen globally.
