Yacht Fire: 30m Yacht Destroyed At Ferretti Shipyard

Ferreti Shipyard devasted as Yacht fire damages 3 Superyachts

Around 9:30 in the morning on the 11th of Janruary, reports came in of a yacht fire at the Ferretti Shipyard. Sadly, the 30-metre superyacht, valued at around €10,000,000 and ready for delivery, was destroyed in the tragedy. According to reports, two other yachts were also damaged by the fire.

Ferretti Group released a statement about the fire, explaining: “The fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning yesterday, Tuesday, January 11, involving a boat under construction at the Cattolica shipyard, caused no injuries thanks to the immediate implementation of safety procedures, with the intervention of the shipyard’s fire-fighting teams and the local fire brigade.”

“The fire has been contained and extinguished, the site is safe. The causes of the incident are currently under investigation.”

M/Y KD

M/Y KD is a 53-meter motor yacht built by Sanlorenzo in Italy, delivered in June 2018. She had her interior and exterior designed by Officina Italiana Design. KD is hull number 2 of the SL52 range. 

The Beginning

Before the build commenced, the project management team went to visit hull no 1 of the SL52 range, Seven Sins. This was to identify any changes that needed to be made to the structure or general arrangement, for example, they quickly identified that a change in the arrangement of the engine room was needed. This would allow the engineers to carry out more advanced servicing and maintenance. And therefore, reduce the time KD would need to spend in shipyards in the future.

The West Nautical team were on site of the build daily to ensure all details were correct. And, to minimise issues that may arise.

The Client wanted a custom designed interior from a specialist subcontractor. This additional layer of complexity had to be managed by the team to ensure the project stayed on time. And, within the allocated budget. 

The client also wanted a custom 7.5-meter tender by Wooden Boat, with the inclusion of Bentley taillights. This was to give the tender a unique feature. The team were responsible for the agreements between Bentley and Wooden Boats to facilitate the build of the tender.

During the build, the team maintained total transparency with the owner.  The owner attended the weekly project meetings and was provided with any and all documentation. Including: defect lists, snagging lists, and monthly reports in order to keep him constantly updated on the build. 

The Result

This constant pressure on the shipyard from the team was good. It meant no part of the build was overlooked, and the project stuck to the build schedule so it could be used for the summer as requested by the owner. KD was also shown at the 2018 Monaco Yacht show.

As a result of the happy owner, knowledge of the Sanlorenzo models and technical expertise of the team, West Nautical have successfully grown their newbuild portfolio across nearly the entire Sanlorenzo fleet. In addition to managing other new build projects with most large superyacht shipyards including sunseeker, Fairline, and Benetti.

5 Maltese Falcon Facts: Who Owns the Superyacht?

She’s nearing her 20th birthday 

The Maltese Falcon was first commissioned in 2000, and after 6 years of construction, made her debut in 2006. After a refit in 2020, she is looking fresher than ever, ready to take her guests on adventures all over the globe. Considering her age, it is impressive how she still holds her own next to the more modern vessels built in recent years.

She’s a former record holder

At the time of her delivery, the Maltese Falcon held the title of the world’s largest sailing yacht. At 88m in length, her size was incredibly impressive. The superyacht held onto this accolade for 9 years until 2015, when Nobiskrug delivered the 143m Sailing Yacht A, ending the Maltese Falcon’s reign at the top. Nowadays, several sailing yachts are considerably bigger, including Oceanco’s Black Pearl, as well as Y721, which is due to be delivered in 2022.

She’s one of the largest yachts available to charter 

At her sizeable 88m length, the Maltese Falcon is one of the largest sailing yachts available to charter. To enjoy the luxury aboard the vessel, up to 12 guests can expect to pay a whopping $400,000 per week. Facilities onboard include a full-deck masters suite and full-beam VIP suite. Additionally, there is space for an outdoor cinema on the sundeck and an inflatable water slide.

Her owner was a billionaire

The Maltese Falcon’s original owner was Thomas Perkins. Perkins was the owner of one of the most successful venture capital firms in the world. In 2014, Forbes estimated his net worth at an eye-watering $8bn. It was with this fortune that he commissioned the Maltese Falcon back in 2000. Before building the famous sailing yacht, Perkins already had an established relationship with Perini Navi, the shipyard that built the Maltese Falcon. The Italian shipyard had previously delivered the 43m Andromede la Dea in 1987. The vessel (which is now called Paz) was the second yacht ever built by Perini Navi.

She has a cinema onboard 

Amongst the many luxuries found onboard, perhaps the most impressive amenity is a cinema. In mere moments, the lounging space at the bow of her sundeck transforms into a cinema. With comfortable lounge chairs and a projector beaming blockbusters onto her forward sail, Maltese Falcon is enough to satisfy any movie buff.

Project Cosmos: 80m Heesen Vessel Leaves Her Shed

Last month we saw the 80m, Heesen Vessel, Project Cosmos, now known as Galactica hit the waters and leave the Dutch company’s shipyard in Oss.  Today, the 7th of Janruary 2022 marks the day the 80m vessel left her shed. Weighing in at 1,700GT vessel can reach a maximum of 30 knots. During the next year, the largest and fastest all-aluminum yacht to ever be built will for sure turn some heads.

The superyacht’s great size and high speed are what make her so impressive. This was achieved through the use of Van Oossanen’s Fast Displacement Hull Form and the expertise of Heesen’s naval architects. The yacht is powered by traditional diesel propulsion, consisting of four engines, two gearboxes, variable-pitch propellers, and innovative Promas rudders.

Winch Design has crafted a beautiful exterior, with clean lines, a sporty look, and extensive use of glass creating a timeless profile. Project Cosmos will undergo intense sea trials in the North Sea in February 2022 before an April 2022 delivery.

World’s First 100% Electric Superyacht Limousine Tender Sold

On January 4th 2022, Pascoe International announced the sale of the world’s first 100% electric superyacht limousine tender. Additionally, the company has confirmed the new tender is now under construction. The vessel, which is under construction at a major Northern European shipyard is set for delivery to a large new build mothership in 2023.


How long was the research and development period for the electric superyacht?

Pascoe International is proud to now offer open-air guest tenders and limousines powered by a fully electric propulsion system. This has come after six years of research and development. With expert advisors and research partners, the Pascoe team has been examining the viability of electric propulsion for many years. During this process, they have carried out extensive R&D on hull design, motor integration, battery performance, and whole-system optimisation.


A statement from Tom Southern, Vice President at Pascoe International:

“The realisation of a zero-emission at point of use Limousine Tender with a top speed of 40 knots and a maximum range of 60 miles will be a defining moment for the superyacht industry. The e-Limousine truly signifies the beginning of a new wave of luxury water-borne travel and a move away from internal combustion propulsion systems in the superyacht sector.”

With an ever-increasing focus on sustainability, this project will mark the start of a new era for yachting. The zero-emission Pascoe Tenders will be a showcase of advanced marine technology from launch and for many years to come.

It is not just the environmental impacts that make electric limousine tenders attractive to yacht owners and their guests. There are a number of advantages:

  1. A near-total removal of torsional vibration transmitted into the hull structure,
  2. Increased noise reduction
  3. Enhanced acceleration as a result of the torque profile of the electric motors.
  4. Charging using a ship’s own power generation systems rather than directly running on diesel.

Yachts And Fuel – How Much Do They Really Consume?

Fuel is one of many annual running costs of a yacht. Not only does the yacht need fuel for cruising; the generators require it to keep the vessel running while at anchor and underway. As well as this, many of the water sports toys require it too.

Some yachts cross the Atlantic Ocean twice a year between the Mediterranean and Caribbean while others embark on world cruises. That equates to a lot of fuel.


So How Much Do They Really Consume?

According to the Yachting Pages, the longest Superyacht in the world, 180m M/Y Azzam, holds 1,000,000 litres of fuel. To put it into perspective, that is the equivalent of filling a regular hatchback car 23,800 times. Or, six Boeing 747 commercial airliners.

West Nautical’s Vessel Manager, Tony Hildrew, a former Yacht Chief Engineer said:

“Fuel is the single biggest expense when it comes to yacht operations, it is estimated that the global spend on fuel is around $150bn annually however this shouldn’t put you off, there are a number of ways to ensure your fuel consumption doesn’t get out of hand. Implementing a Ships Energy Efficiency Management Plan or SEEMP for short is a great way to keep fuel costs down without compromising on your cruising experience.”

Each yacht will consume fuel differently for a number of reasons. It could be the size and make of the engines. Or, how often the yacht is using generators. As well as the number of tenders and water sports toys on board that require fuel. For example, if the yacht is out at anchor and running on generators 90% of the time, the fuel consumption will be much higher than a yacht that is in a marina at night and connected to shore power and water.

Another factor that will affect fuel consumption is the yacht’s itinerary. This is because the sea conditions will impact how much fuel the engines consume.


How Is Consumption Measured?

You will be able to input the start and ending points of your cruise on the map. This will automatically update the distance table. The next step is to enter the speed, fuel consumption and cost of fuel per litre to determine the cost of the trip.

Here is an example: A fast 30m yacht cruising at 20 knots will consume roughly 400 – 500 litres depending on the engine type. This would equate to the total consumption of 2500 litres for a distance of 100 nautical miles.

Another example is, a 70m yacht looking to travel 100 nautical miles with the engines burning 1000 litres per hour would add up to a total consumption of 8335L for that passage. Depending on where the yacht bunkered, the estimated cost with the price per litre being on the low end at €0.90 per litre would cost a total of €7501.50. An example of a 100 nautical mile passage would take you from Saint Tropez to The North Coast of Corsica.


How Much Does It Cost?

Fuel prices fluctuate depending on which country you bunker in and some places you bunker offer tax free fuel such a Gibraltar and Montenegro. Fuel prices can vary but typically costs between €0.80 and €1.30 per litre.

“Fuel costs should be at the top of any yacht owner and captain’s minds for two reasons: to minimise costs as well as reduce the environmental impact of burning unnecessary fuel. The superyacht charter market, more than most other markets, relies on pristine waters for their guests to enjoy their holiday. If the oceans in popular charter destinations are not maintained, it will decrease the demand for yacht charter and therefore the revenue for owners.” “If you are looking for expertise in operational management and engineering in order to plan a SEEMP, West Nautical would be delighted to assist.”

5 New Superyachts to Look Out for in 2022

With the high demand for luxury vessels leading to a record-breaking number of new superyachts under construction, 2022 is looking to be a year full of boat debuts. With many projects set to reach important milestones, we are expecting lots of news from all the major shipyards. Here are 5 of the most exciting superyachts to look out for in 2022.

Feadship 1010

At 118m long, project 1010 interestingly marks Feadship’s largest vessel to date. Since the project’s announcement, the renowned shipbuilder is working towards a 2022 delivery. October 2020 saw the vessel hit the water for the first time when it was first launched in the Netherlands, but 2022 is when completion and delivery are scheduled. Although very little is known about the details of the superyacht, we expect to hear more as we enter the new year.

Set to become the third 100+m sailing yacht in 2022 is Oceanco’s Y721. She will take Black Pearl’s title of the second-longest sailing yacht in the global fleet. When delivered, there will only be three sailing yachts measuring over 100m, with the biggest being Nobiskrug’s 142m Sailing Yacht A. Reportedly commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Y721 is the longest yacht ever built in the Netherlands. As well as this, it is also Oceanco’s largest-ever build. 

Heesen Cosmos

After her Spring 2022 delivery, Heesen’s 80m superyacht Cosmos will be the biggest and fastest all-aluminium superyacht in the world. This is due to her maximum speed of 30 knots and 1,700GT. Cosmos features an exterior crafted by Winch Design, which comprises clean lines, a sporty look and extensive use of glass, achieving a timeless profile. Expect to see her undertaking North Sea trials in early 2022 ahead of her delivery.

Lurssen Northern Star

Amongst the numerous projects under construction at Lurssen is Northern Star, a 107m explorer superyacht. Once delivered, she will be used to explore the farthest reaches of the globe. Northern Star (previously named Project Icecap) is a diesel-electric hybrid that accommodates up to 20 guests in 10 staterooms. She sports a rugged design by Salt Ship Design and is due for delivery in 2022.

Amels Custom 78

With a gross tonnage of 2,850, once the Custom Amels 78m delivery is complete, she will be Amels’ largest vessel to date in terms of GT. The superyacht features exterior and interior design by Espen Øino and Zuretti Interior, respectively. Øino has stated it is “a unique project” which features a spacious, open-top deck, large aft pool, and wide side decks. She accommodates 14 guests in total whilst also housing 26 crew. The superyacht was recently spotted during her sea trials in September, ahead of her delivery in 2022.

5 Of The Largest Superyacht Deliveries In 2021

2021 has been an unbelievable year for the Superyacht Industry. There have been a number of great superyacht deliveries large and small and the big builders are pumping out superyachts faster than they ever have before. With business booming more than ever, the market has grown, and so have the yachts. Let’s look back on the past 12 months and at 5 of the largest superyacht deliveries in 2021.


1. SOLARIS

One of the most exciting superyacht deliveries of 2021, Lloyd Werfts 140m ‘Solaris’. The 27th of May 2021 marked the delivery of one of the world’s most luxurious explorer yachts. Owned by Abramovich, her volume of 11,011 GT ranks her as one of the largest Superyachts to date!


2. NORD

The 142-meter Lurssen Yacht Nord was delivered on the 19th of February 2021. With a top speed of 20 knots and a gross tonnage of 9,250, it’s safe to say she has certainly turned a few heads this year. And let’s not forget her facilities: a helicopter hangar, two helicopter platforms, a swimming pool, two elevators, a gym with a sauna, and a cinema are all among the features of this stunning vessel.


3. Project Y719

Oceanco’s 117-meter project Y719 is the largest yacht under construction in the Netherlands and the largest launched from the yard’s Alblasserdam facility. The yachts details are scarce, but we do know that she features exterior design by Espen Øino International, and an interior designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design.


4. APHO

Lürssens 115m Aph0, previously known as ‘Project Enzo’. Exterior and interior design by Nuvolari Lenard, with interiors in collaboration with Simone Feltrin. Although she’s not currently available for charter, it is rumored she will be available for select charters starting in 2022.


5. Viva

The 94m Feadship hybrid yacht was delivered in June of 2021, following her launch earlier in the year. Hybrids are on the rise and it’s no surprise when they can reach a top speed of 20 knots in diesel mode!  Vivas’ exterior design was penned by Azure Yacht Design and Studio De Voogt and an interior by Peter Marino


What a lineup! It is safe to say 2021 has seen some of the best and largest superyacht deliveries and we cannot wait to see what 2022 has in store for us.

The UK Superyacht industry is a lot bigger than you might think. But, does that make the UK the “centre of the universe” as far as yachting is concerned? Let’s see.

It’s a very British thing!

Yachting has always been a very British thing. After all, it’s a maritime nation and an island; nobody had a choice. We had to learn to sail! The Aristocracy sailed and had various racing yachts, then came the wealthy entrepreneurs of their day. This was all cemented in history by the most famous Yachting event of them all, The America’s Cup or “Hundred Guineas cup” as it was originally called, first took place around the Isle of Wight in 1851. The rest, they say, is Yachting history.

The UK Superyacht industry

Today, just like it was through the developing years of the industry, most Superyacht businesses have offices in the UK. Here are a few examples;

London is still the insurance centre of the universe too. Meaning the Superyacht industry has a lot of insurance heavyweights based there: Sturge Taylor, CRS Yachts and Willis Towers Watson, to name but three.

Well, it might be easier to ask who isn’t based in the UK as the list of UK Superyacht industry companies is long. Here are a few more examples;

This list is just the tip of the iceberg. A huge amount of Superyacht businesses have either their head office or satellite office in the UK, and for a good reason. London is one of the world’s financial capitals and, therefore, the city where many Superyacht owners and potential owners either live, do business, or both. Therefore, it makes sense to have an office where many of your potential clients spend their time.

Add to this the up-and-coming popularity of the UK as a Superyacht destination, and you could soon see more companies opening offices in the UK to support their clients whilst here.

Heesen Sell 55m Superyacht ‘Project Apollo’

The 55m Heesen superyacht, Project Apollo has been sold. The sale marks Heesen’s fifth of 2021, rounding out an already hugely successful year for the shipyard.

Key features of Apollo include a fuel-efficient Fast Displacement Hull design, ocean-crossing range, huge interior volumes and a timeless profile. These impressive features paired with Heseen’s renowned build quality are what led to the buyers’ purchase of the superyacht.

“2021 has been a very successful year for Heesen. Our semi-custom yachts, which are available on short delivery schedules, are making waves all over the world,” stated Friso Visser, Heesen CCO.

An external design by Omega Architects incorporates expansive floor-to-ceiling windows to bring a sense of sea and sky inside. Also, horizontal lines that increase the optical length of the yacht whilst reducing perceived height are in place to give Apollo extra visual impact.

The interior design of Apollo comes courtesy of Luca Dini Design & Architecture. With an interior characterised by light and warm tones, as well as contrasts in texture, Apollo creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for the owner and their guests. The vessel accommodates twelve guests in six staterooms, all of which are en-suite.

Turquoise Yachts Announce New 65m M/Y Neptune

Turquoise Yachts have announced M/Y Neptune, a 65m superyacht designed to offer great value in its highly competitive 55-65m category. The design marks a collaboration between the Istanbul-based shipyard and Italian design house Hot Lab.

The sleek and stylish vessel resembles a torpedo slicing through the water. This, paired with low bulwarks accentuating the sheerlines on each deck gives Neptune the illusion of even more length. The use of glass on board allows for uninterrupted vistas, so whether guests are cruising the Caribbean or the Baltic, the view will always be immediately available.

Neptune’s guest sleeping facilities comprise 1 owners’ suite, 2 VIP cabins and 4 guest cabins. Elsewhere, she houses a cinema, beach club and gym for guests to enjoy during their trips. Over 7 crew cabins and a designated cabin each for the First Officer and Captain, the vessel accommodates 16 crew.
