Crew Pages: Connecting the Yachting Industry With One Comprehensive Platform

The Superyacht industry is famously a social one, where networking and connections are of the utmost importance. Understanding this, Gracija Matijević set up Crew Pages, a space to connect crew, help them to find work and expand their networks. In an industry that is so unique, and perhaps at times unfathomable to the outside world, creating a space where crew can get together to share their experiences would no doubt be a success.

In this article, Matijević explains the inspiration behind building the platform, the unique attributes of Crew Pages and what positive changes he hopes that it will incite in the industry as well as sharing some testimonials from Crew.

Firstly, can you explain the concept of Crew Pages in your own words?

Crew Pages is a website bringing together all crew and recruiters from the maritime industry to help them connect, find jobs, learn something new, and expand their networks.

What inspired you to set up a platform such as Crew Pages? Where did you see a gap in the market?

For years, my wife Ajka, founder of A+ Yachting, and I helped our friends and clients from the industry switch jobs, find new opportunities and simply level up. When we faced difficulties with two of our friends looking for work for more than a year, we realised how closed our industry can be, and how it may be difficult for crew to find options. And my idea was to try and do something about it.

“The idea is to make the industry more accessible to new talents”

How does Crew Pages fill that particular gap?

The idea is to make the industry more accessible to new talents, and we do that by offering our services free of charge. Then, by completing their profile, they automatically receive a well-designed and representable CV. Also, our search engine is built in a way not to give preferences to any particular groups, but rather to focus on the best-matching skill set to what the recruiters are looking for.

Who does the platform cater to?

We focus on all crew members across the maritime industry, recruiters and recruiting companies. We would love to see the entire maritime industry together and are open for other professionals and companies to join and promote their businesses.

What is different about Crew Pages compared to other platforms in the industry?

There are many job searching platforms indeed. We have available opportunities for all industries in the maritime sector with the addition of land-based jobs too, for crew members that are looking to switch up their onboard life. We are not just a job advertisement board, we also have a social network, maritime only. This helps crew strengthen their connections, share experiences, and showcase skills.

What positive changes would you like to see in the industry via Crew Pages?

We want to see more open and easier communication between job seekers and hiring teams. We hope to ease the workload for the recruiting companies, making their work more streamlined. On the crew end, we would love to see more great talent getting good opportunities, ensure people are not signing up with sketchy or non-regulated companies, and see more healthy working environments.

How do you see the company progressing within the next 5 years?

All crew under one roof!  This is such a massive and inspiring industry with so much potential for growth and improvement, and the only way we can achieve this is if we work on it together. I hope Crew Pages will be the place where we start doing the work.

Rolls-Royce Acquires Italian Yacht Supplier

Rolls-Royce has acquired Team Italia/Onyx Marine, the Italian group specialising in yacht bridges and marine electronics.

Growing together: Rolls-Royce has acquired Italian yacht bridge and automation specialist Team Italia, expanding its mtu product portfolio for the yacht market.

Having begun collaborating on joint development projects in 2019, the two companies say they have agreed that the best way to realise strategic growth would be for Team Italia to become part of Rolls-Royce.

Team Italia, established in 2000, designs and develops integrated bridges and marine navigation and automation systems – mainly for Italian yacht builders and shipyards positioned prominently on the global yacht market. Today, Team Italia systems are in service around the world on some 350 yachts between 30m and 100m in length.

The news marks the latest expansion into the yacht market for Rolls-Royce’s Power Systemsbusiness unit. In June, Rolls-Royce opened a new €30m assembly plant for its mtu Series 2000 yacht engines in Kluftern near Friedrichshafen, Germany. In 2022, Ferretti Group renewed an ongoing supply agreement with Rolls-Royce to use its mtu engines to power its yachts until at least 2027.

“This acquisition is the next logical step on our way to becoming a provider of integrated solutions for the yacht industry,” says Denise Kurtulus, vice president marine in Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “Our products complement each other perfectly, and with this step, we expand our solutions portfolio significantly to enhance our market position and create further benefits for our customers.”

In addition to a mtu propulsion system, Rolls-Royce offers integrated bridge products as well as regulation, control, automation and navigation systems for yachts.

“We are proud and very happy to become part of the Rolls-Royce group,” said Massimo Minnella, managing director of Team Italia.

“We strongly believe that in order to implement a structured expansion and maintain the high level of continuity and growth that will secure the future of our company, we need an excellent partner and marine expert like Rolls-Royce Power Systems at our side. We see excellent prospects for reaping benefits together in the global luxury yacht market.”

Daniele Ceccanti, technical director of Team Italia, adds:

“Team Italia has always aimed to build products that make complex operations much simpler. By joining forces with Rolls-Royce Power Systems, it is moving another step forward in making increasingly complex systems that will equip the yachts of the future simpler and safer to operate.”

With the new name Team Italia Marine, the company continues to operate in the Italian cities of Fano, Livorno and Forlì. Its workforce of almost 60 employees, including all managers and key personnel will be taken over by Rolls-Royce.

Massimo Minnella will keep the role of managing director, and Daniele Ceccanti remains technical director. They will be supported by Nicola Camuffo, head of the Rolls-Royce mtu Yacht Competence Centre in La Spezia.

The Importance Of Safety Practices Onboard Superyachts

Working on Superyachts can be exciting, lucrative, and fulfilling, but it can also be dangerous. It’s imperative to have safety practices onboard Superyachts, not just for guests, but for crew and anyone else visiting the boat. These practices may include regular training sessions onboard and ‘SOPs’.

In this article, we hear how the Second Officer of a 70-metre yacht ensures that crew and guests stay safe by abiding by certain practices onboard…

Sean Gallup/Getty Images

What is your general attitude to safety onboard?

“Safety culture comes before all other issues onboard. I aim to help to create an environment where every crew member feels like they have a voice, to either talk to a senior crew member or take up an issue with the elected Crew Safety Rep.”

What is the role of a ‘Crew Safety Rep’?

“A Crew Safety Rep is a crew member elected by other crew to form part of the safety committee and therefore be involved in monthly safety meetings. Even onboard busy boats, drills and training are essential, and we try to make the most of spare moments where we can conduct drills and training – such as during a crossing.”

Safety onboard is a very broad and in-depth subject area, but when doing a ‘round’ on deck. What are you generally looking out for safety-wise day-to-day?

“To summarise a very broad and in-depth topic, these are the things that come to mind. With everyone being busy onboard safety issues can go unnoticed day to day, it is the Deck watchkeeper’s responsibility, along with the OOW on watch to spot hazards and assess risks throughout the day.”

“Things to look out for include; any items blocking fire escapes or hatches, monitoring any contractors that might be onboard to ensure they are following the boat’s safety standards, ensuring open hatches are cordoned off/manned, and regular checks of the Fenders and lines.”

“Further, I would generally ensure that all deck operations, whether we are on charter or not, are following the vessel’s SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). These can include things like jet-ski launching or power tool usage. Anyone involved in these operations should have had adequate training.”

You mentioned previously about adequate training. Can you tell us what safety training you conduct onboard?

“Training can be divided into subcategories that are department-specific, or more general and required by all crew.”

“Nobody is involved in any dangerous operations until trained and certified. This is done through checklist-style qualifications set out by the yacht’s management company. These can often be generic, so they must be followed up with more specific training that is unique to each vessel.”

“We follow a strict schedule for safety drills such as Fire, Man Overboard or Enclosed Space, but we also use follow-up training and extra drills to increase the crew’s standards in the event of an emergency.”

What are some typical examples of bad safety practices onboard superyachts?

“The first thing that springs to mind would be, veering from the instructions set by an SOP for a dangerous task to make the task easier or faster and therefore compromising on safety. Hours of thought go into creating SOPs the way they are to minimise all the known risks.”

What would you do if an accident occurred?

“This reverts to training and drills. All crew should know what their duty is in the event of an emergency, based on the roles on the boat’s muster list.”

“All the crew that are required to assist with the situation at hand should be alerted via various means of onboard communication, such as crew radios or the general alarm – depending on the severity.”

“In my opinion, a key point to make is that accidents do happen, but what’s important is that we respond by investigating exactly how it happened and putting procedures in place to prevent it from happening again.”

Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 Revealed

Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 has announced details of this year’s show. As has been the case every year for over 45 years, Europe’s largest in-water show will be the first major international event of the yachting season.

Port Canto at Cannes Yachting Festival

Over 6 days, from 12 to 17 September, under the sunshine of the French Riviera, more than 650 boats of all sizes (from five to fifty metres) as well as the latest nautical equipment, numerous innovations and world previews will be unveiled for nearly 55,000 expected visitors: professionals, curious on-lookers, keen boaters or experienced enthusiasts.

A major new feature of the 2023 event is the creation of an area afloat in the Vieux Port, which will accommodate smaller boats, from 8 meters upwards, in response to demand from numerous exhibitors.

‘Discovering some real gems in-water and on land’

“Thanks to the renewed confidence of our exhibitors, this 2023 edition is looking very good with similar forecasts to the previous year, i.e. 600 exhibitors, more than 650 boats and 140 previews” explains Sylvie Ernoult, Director of the Yachting Festival.

Ernoult also added:

“This new edition will highlight the small units with the creation of a brand new area, a marina in the heart of the Vieux Port, which will accommodate more than fifty small motor boats from 8 to 12 metres. As the show’s DNA is to offer the most eclectic offer possible, it seemed natural to us to host in the best way its small units, traditionally displayed ashore on the Quai Max Laubeuf, i.e. in a dedicated floating area.”

“Once again this year, our visitors will enjoy discovering some real gems in-water and on land, boats of all sizes and types, equipped with ‘traditional’ or carbon-free engines with the first onboard electric, hybrid or hydrogen power systems”

To conclude, Ernoult adds: “As is the case every year, all our teams are mobilised on a daily basis to offer a memorable experience to our exhibitors and visitors.”

YMS 360: The Complete Solution To Vessel Management

With a vast amount of experience working onboard Superyachts, the team at YMS 360 understand fully how certain technologies can benefit daily operations onboard. Developed over several years, YMS 360 aims to be the go-to software for all it requires to successfully and seamlessly run a Superyacht, from crew management to progress tracking of new-build vessels – the software has been designed to tackle all areas with ease.

In this article, Scott Strand, CEO of Triton Development, Inc, shares with us the journey of the product so far, including some of the biggest challenges of development and how he hopes YMS 360 will break new ground and dominate the market of Superyacht tech.

SYC: Firstly, can you explain YMS 360 and its uses?

Scott Strand: YMS 360 is the next generation of vessel management software from the developers of Triton Administrator. We developed the very first comprehensive ERP software for the yachting industry over 25 years ago.

Our software helps crew, managers, owners, and other stakeholders manage all aspects of maintaining a modern yacht in today’s ever-evolving complex landscape of regulatory compliance and day-to-day operations required to efficiently own, manage and run the vessel.

Our software includes modules for compliance (ISM, customs & immigration, safe-manning, HR functions, etc), planned maintenance and project management, inventory, purchasing & stock control, integration with other systems, all record-keeping, and much more. Our software is a life-cycle product that aids stakeholders from the conception of yacht construction through full operations.

SYC: What initially motivated you to develop this software, where did you discover the gap in the market?

SS: In the 1990s nothing was available that met the growing complexities of efficiently keeping a yacht operational. We originally developed the software to meet the day-to-day needs of a vessel (maintenance, inventories, expenses, crew management). We quickly evolved to tackle the myriad complexities of the construction process and maintenance periods.

“YMS 360 is the complete solution. We tailored our product for the very specific demands of the maritime yachting industry”

SYC: How does YMS 360 fill that particular gap?

YMS 360 is the complete solution. We tailored our product to the very specific demands of the maritime yachting industry.  Whether it be crew management or organising the collaboration and tracking of a new build. YMS provides the tools that very specifically create efficiencies, allowing yacht professionals the time and information to make well-informed decisions.

SYC: Can you share with us the initial stages of developing the software? Where did it all begin?

SS: We originally started the concept process when still working as crew. We identified gaps and mapped out what the goals of the software needed to be. At the same time, we have been able to use the feedback from our broad customer base to add features and improvements to meet the needs of the yachting industry.

From there, we take to the project manager to design the logic flows and wireframes (conceptual visualisation of the user interface (UI)). We worked with just the greatest design team – FRAM – from Sophia. Once we had our designs settled upon, we then took it to the dev team to code.

Perhaps our greatest strength is that we’ve been doing this for a very long time. We have pioneered what is now commonplace in our industry. I can see elements and concepts that we developed in all our competitors. For example, I see products with new features that we pioneered over a decade ago.

More SYC: Life After Yachting, Developing YMS 360 With Scott Strand

“The marketplace is now more competitive than ever. This challenges us to take our product to even higher levels of technology, support, and partnerships”

SYC: What have been some of the biggest challenges so far on this journey?

SS: One of our biggest challenges is really one of the benefits for our customers. The marketplace is now more competitive than ever. This challenges us to take our product to even higher levels of technology, support, and partnerships.

SYC: What do you hope for the future of YMS 360?

SS: I am hopeful that YMS 360 will continue to break new ground and be a sector leader. I’d like to see our product continue to create better and better collaborations with other tech and industry channels. I think we’re off to a good start.  Given our long time in the industry, we have been able to develop great relationships and partnerships along the way.

SYC: What positive changes do you hope to see in the industry as a whole?

SS: From the perspective of YMS 360, I think we are on the cusp of an exponential leap forward in the yacht industry from a technological point of view. This technology should involve more amazing integrations and garner greater operational efficiencies.  Create a safer and sustainable professional environment, and in general, keep yachting at the forefront of being a positive force in the world.

SYC: What advice would you give to anyone wanting to develop their own software or set up their own business out of yachting?

Superyacht Foodie Launch Michelin Star Onboard Experience

Could the Superyacht Community Save Haute Dining? Curating the Michelin Star restaurant experience onboard superyachts, a new full sensory, haute cuisine, Nordic dining experience has been launched by Superyacht Foodie in collaboration with Fraser Yachts.

Superyacht Foodie in collaboration with Fraser Yachts

Following the announcement that the renowned 3* Michelin Star restaurant Noma is closing its doors and has taken the decision to focus instead on an e-commerce platform (and the occasional pop-up restaurant), it seems that the new to market concept that Superyacht Foodie has been working on over the last six months is synergising perfectly with the Haute Cuisine movement.

The Superyacht Foodie Experience brings a Michelin Star restaurant directly onboard your Superyacht. Working with Michelin Star Chef Kim Mikkola and his restaurant Inari, they take over the galley for one night and curate a distinctive dining experience that includes a 10-course tasting menu with optional wine pairing.

This is just the start, they also curate the ambience with lighting, smells, sounds, textures, table-scaping and service. Yachts chefs and crew can choose to take the night off or be part of the event, and Superyacht owners and charter guests not only get a completely new gastronomic offer during their charter but also get the opportunity to meet and talk with the Michelin Star Chefs during after dinner drinks.

Born from a conversation with a Superyacht captain who had privatised a Michelin Star restaurant for his charter guests, only for them to decide they didn’t want to have to go ashore, the Superyacht Foodie Experience brings a new level of Haute Cuisine to Superyachts.

Founder of Superyacht Foodie, Titta Uoti-Väisänen explained:

“We’ve been working on this concept following several conversations with busy charter yachts, and considering the feedback from the next generation of owners and guests who are asking, ‘what else can we do?’. By day three or four of the charter, guests and especially regular charterers, can feel they’ve done most things, they’ve been ashore, they dine in spectacular restaurants all the time, they’ve spent the day enjoying the ocean and just don’t want to dress up and go ashore again. Having the Superyacht Foodie Experience booked mid charter gives them something they have never experienced to look forward to.”

Mark Duncan, Director of Marketing & Business Development at Fraser Yachts added:

“We love fresh, new ideas at Fraser Yachts. We were proud to support The Superyacht Foodie Experience with their launch onboard M/Y CURIOSITY during the recent MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona which was a great success. In no small part due to Titta’s extensive experience in luxury yachting and her understanding of what our clients really look for. Well done to Titta, Michelin Star Chef Kim Mikkola and all the SYF team. We wish you every success and look forward to presenting this unique pop-up experience to our charter clients around the world.”

Anais Jaber, charter manager of M/Y Curiosity who attended the inaugural Superyacht Foodie Experience, along with the owner’s family shared: “This is a truly custom-made, one-of-a-kind experience that fits our standards and clientele perfectly. It has potential for further development in our industry.”

Yacht Crew Uniform: Stay Cool This Summer With FastR Yachtwear

With the summer season fully upon us, it’s important for your crew to stay cool and comfortable onboard, especially when cruising in areas such as the Mediterranean where temperatures rise to stifling levels. Keeping comfortable in the heat begins with the right kind of yacht crew uniform. In this blog, Fast R Yachtwear provide a breakdown of the best types of fabric in their catalogue for staying cool this summer, without compromising on style.

Read on to discover the best fabrics for keeping cool onboard, their properties and some highlights from the FastR lookbook.

Polyester

Polyester has a natural ability to draw moisture away from the body, making it an ideal choice for warmer climates. The liquid is quickly distributed to the fabric face where it dries quickly, ensuring the wearer is cool and comfortable. This is why most sportswear is made from Polyester fabrics, and why it’s an ideal choice for yacht crew uniform. This fabric is most ideal for Deck crew who are likely to be closest to the water during the season.

Here are the main benefits of wearing Polyester onboard:

  • Inherent wicking properties
  • This wicking ability is great for summer showers, polyester will dry super quick after a quick downpour
  • Strong but lightweight fibres produce a lightweight but durable fabric
  • Easy care fabric, dries quickly and requires little or no ironing
  • It is also stain resistant, due to the wicking properties stains don’t soak into the fibres and can be easily lifted out of the fabric
  • Takes dye easily so produces bright and vibrant colours that are fade resistant after washing – Your clothing will stay looking newer for longer.
  • Perfect performance fibre

Cotton

Cotton is a naturally breathable fibre which is odour resistant, making it an ideal hot weather fabric for Yacht Crew, especially when it is constructed into light airy woven fabrics.

The main benefits of cotton uniform items are:

  • Hypoallergenic sustainable natural fibre, perfect for sensitive skins
  • It is compostable, meaning Cotton naturally breaks down in soil
  • Super strong fibre actually gets stronger when wet
  • Fire resistant, cotton burns while manmade fibres melt
  • Highly pil resistant, cotton fabrics tend to bobble less than synthetic fabrics

However, there are some things to consider when choosing cotton Yacht uniform:

  • Can be washed at high temperatures however colours tend to fade, and 100% cotton fabrics have a tendency to shrink
  • Cotton also requires special care; it takes a lot of time to dry and usually requires ironing.
  • Creasing can be an issue especially in woven fabrics, the addition of elastane will help

Poly Blends

A Polyester Cotton blend can offer the best of both fibres. The breathability and strength of Cotton combined with the easy-care properties and strong colour retention of Polyester could make Poly Blend an excellent option for Yacht Crew uniform.

Some main benefits of Poly Blend Fabrics:

  • Mixes cotton fibres with polyester fibres, usually 65% Cotton and 35% Polyester.
  • Stronger, more customisable and more versatile than 100% Cotton
  • Doesn’t naturally stick to the skin like 100% Polyester

Coral Spa Consultants – Improving Spa Spaces Onboard Superyachts

Kayleigh Westgarth spent almost 12 years working onboard Superyachts. Starting as a Spa Stewardess, and working her way up to Spa Manager, Westgarth has worked on various vessels up to 120m in length. Westgarth then went on to create her business, Coral Spa Consultants, a division of Gym Marine. The two companies work together to set up premium Spa spaces onboard Superyachts. Westgarth’s initial business idea was formed from years of experience working in limited spaces onboard Superyachts and a deep understanding of how to improve these spaces in order to deliver better guest experiences.

In this article, Westgarth speaks of her passion for providing guests with exceptional service and memorable treatments onboard, her tips for aspiring Spa Stewardesses, why she chose to work with Gym Marine, and the importance of adequate treatment spaces onboard.

SYC: How did you find yourself working onboard Superyachts as a spa therapist?

Kayleigh Westgarth: After qualifying as a massage and beauty therapist straight out of school, I started working on cruise ships as a Spa Therapist, whilst there I started hearing more and more about the magical world of yachting! After my contract ended, I spent some time at home working in Spas, but missed the travel element. I decided to take the plunge and get my Yachting qualifications. I was very lucky to get a position on a new build 80m yacht – it was one of the best decisions I have ever made!

SYC: How long did you work onboard and what was the journey up to the position of Spa Manager like for you?

KW: I worked in Yachting for about 12 years. Initially starting as a Spa Stewardess, I loved learning all the new skills, focusing on becoming a valuable member of the interior, as well as offering guests a large range of treatments. Over the years, massage rooms  on yachts have slowly started to expand in size, turning into full Spa areas on some boats. This allowed me to start to take on more responsibility within the Spa, working with the other Spa Stews.

I started focusing on new-builds, setting up and managing various onboard Spas from 60-130m plus, and loved the challenge of helping to create a space that flowed well and met all the guests requirements.

SYC: What are the key skills and qualities crew need to have to excel in the role of Superyacht Spa Therapist, and how do you develop and maintain these skills?

Flexibility, knowledge and passion! I truly believe that you can tell if the person treating you isn’t fully invested in their position. Yachting can be tiring and you can be pulled into treatments last minute, but when you step into that space you must be ready to give that guest your undivided attention. If you are distracted and thinking about what snacks might be in the crew mess – your guest will feel the difference!

I am also a big advocate for constant training. The Spa industry is constantly changing and you have clients that undoubtedly visit the best Spas in the world, so you need to constantly be improving. I have always aimed to do treatments on the crew in down time, it’s a great way to get feedback on new techniques but also a wonderful treat for them after a long charter!

“Being onboard is all about being part of a team, and working together to create a wonderful environment for each and every guest”

SYC: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the yachting industry, and what qualities do you think are essential for success in this field?

KW: Open yourself up to learning from anyone and everyone. The joy of yachting is that the crew and guests come from all over the world. Which means there are so many opportunities to learn more about different cultures or new massage techniques from  another Spa girl in your team! Being onboard is all about being part of a team, and working together to create a wonderful environment for each and every guest.

More SYC: 10 Questions With Superyacht Masseuse Laura Riera

SYC: Can you describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult or demanding  guest, and how did you handle the situation?

KW: Sometimes it’s all about seeing a ‘demand’ or difficulty in a new light – you never know what someone has been going through that day. Looking at it that way always made dealing with a guest being slightly snappy a lot easier to deal with! Although  being made to massage someone’s feet on the Aft Deck, sitting on the floor under the table whilst they played Backgammon is probably something I will never forget, my shoulders ache just thinking about it!

SYC: What inspired you to set up Coral Spa Consultants? What were some of the key issues you faced when setting up your business?

KW: As I started doing more and more new-builds, I kept noticing the same problems in the Spa area onboard. They were always gorgeous spaces but sometimes the operational aspects hadn’t fully been taken into consideration, which sometimes detracted from the level of luxury and calming ambience we wanted to offer during treatments. I found myself wishing that I could get involved earlier in a project, to address these issues. I spent a lot of time brainstorming, reaching out to people, and assessing how I could best be of use to designers and shipyards.

“Coral Spa Consultants creates a better working environment for the crew, a far superior treatment experience for the owner, and often saves them a lot of money in the long run”

SYC: How did you come to join forces with Gym Marine, and why is it a perfect fit to work together?

I reached out to Edward from Gym Marine late in 2022, I had been on many boats where they had fitted the Gyms for guests and crew, and I was always really impressed with the attention to detail. I saw them as the Gym version of what I wanted to be for Spas! I loved the fact that Edward was also from a yachting background, so understood the importance of the crew also having a great working space. Luckily, he had also seen the gap in the market for Yacht Spas. Working with Gym Marine is honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only does it allow me to help and work with many more projects than I could have imagined, but I also get to work with a truly incredible team that are so supportive.

By sharing Gym Marine’s resources in CAD planning, logistics and international structure, we know that we can save clients’ money and time. We will be able to combine the Freight, Installation and Customs processes of Gym and Spa areas into a single white glove service.

SYC: What solution are you trying to solve in the Yachting Industry with Coral Spa Consultants?

KW: We are bridging the gap between the interior design team’s vision and then the end usage of the Spa. We are able to provide valuable insight into the flow of a treatment room, allowing the team to take into consideration where they might need to place  plumbing for hair wash basins or pedicure baths, the storage required for all the equipment, linens and products, as well as locations for plug sockets.

Currently, when a Spa Therapist steps on a boat, they often have to figure out the best way to provide a Pedicure or Manicure on a massage bed, and often that massage bed doesn’t even have enough room for them to move around it freely. These are all  elements that can be avoided if designers and shipyards speak to people with the relevant training and experience from the beginning. Coral Spa Consultants creates a better working environment for the crew, a far superior treatment experience for the  owner, and often saves them a lot of money in the long run.

The fact that I have actually been in all of these situations myself is also crucial. Not only do I think about the general spa operations and requirements, I can also see it as a crew member. My brain automatically goes to ‘where will that be stowed?’ and ‘Does that wheeled item have brakes?’. I have experienced chasing a spa trolley across a room when at sea and having to massage from awkward angles because I can’t sit at the end of the bed for a reflexology treatment! I pre-empt these problems  in the early stages, my goal is to save as many Spa Therapists from bad backs as possible!

SYC: What advice would you give to Spa Therapists working onboard yachts in terms of practicality and working in small spaces?

KW: Sometimes the best treatment is a simple massage or facial. You don’t need a lot of space, you just need to ensure your bed is as comfortable as possible and you can reach your products without having to dash to a cupboard outside. On smaller boats, I  always liked to have a ‘grab bag’ prepared ready to go. Which meant that whether my treatment was in the massage room or on the Sun Deck I knew I had everything ready.

Making sure you have simple items like a bed warmer and large comfortable towels and sheets, this will instantly allow your client to relax on the bed. You just need to provide guests with a calming space to switch off in. There are so many multi-functional items out there these days that allow you to save space whilst still offering high-end treatments. Good quality handheld facial machines are a great way to offer a results driven facial. Lava Shells allow you to add heat to your massage without the need to store a big hot stone warmer. It’s these little considerations that will make a guests’ time in the Spa memorable.

Amico & Co Introduce New Sustainable Photovoltaic System

A new extensive photovoltaic system has been installed in Amico & Co which will cover 53% of the annual needs of the shipyard and Waterfront Marina production activities, supplying renewable energy. The on-site system occupies an area of over 4,300 m2 with an array of 1782 solar panels developing a maximum power of about 1MegaWatt peak (1MWp). This new investment made by Amico & Co represents another important step towards clean manufacturing and fuller integration of the superyacht activities with the city of Genoa.

Renewable Sources

With commissioning complete on the new photovoltaic system installed on site, Amico & Co – a Genoese company which is a global leader in the refit and repair of super and mega yachts – will be able to produce 53% of its shipyard and marina energy consumption via renewable sources. The largest privately built solar array in a port area in Italy, the new system develops a total maximum power of about 1MegaWatt peak (MWp), is composed of 1,782 solar panels and occupies an area of about 4300m2 extending over the roofs of the shipyard hangars and offices as well as the marina buildings.

The system was manufactured by Ceresa Next, a service company based near Turin which develops renewable energy and electrification solutions for industrial customers, established in 2020 as a spin-off of Fratelli Ceresa, a company founded in 1921 and historically active in the energy services market for condominium clients.

A Clean Manufacturing Objective: Step By Step

With this latest investment of around €1mln, Amico & Co has taken another step towards its clean manufacturing objective, giving another contribution to creating an economic ecosystem perfectly compatible with the city, capable of generating value and wealth in the area and qualifying Genoa as an international capital for superyacht operations, at the forefront not only in terms of professionalism but also in terms of levels of environmental sustainability.

There have been numerous interventions over the years aimed at zeroing emissions from vessels stopping at Amico & Co for works or the Marina, and reducing the impact of repair works, starting with electrification of the shipyard’s docks in 2007/2009, following with construction of permanent hangars and fixed structures (dry-docks) which are capable of efficiently confining and isolating vessels during works, from 2010/2014.

In 2019 Amico & Co then inaugurated the ShipLift, a fully electrified haulage, launching and handling system for vessels up to 95 metres LOA in situ, with zero emissions. Two years later Amico & Co opened the berthing facility Waterfront Marina, where moored yachts are connected to the shore electricity and sewage networks.

“With some pride we can say that since the very start of our activities, with greater intensity since the early 2000s, we  have made investments that have gone in the direction of what we now call sustainability. Our strategy was and is the implementation of work process efficiency, particularly  through covered and permanent warehouses and other facility technologies, which guarantee 73% consumption savings when compared to any temporary facility.”
