Get To Know World League Of Agents – Commitment To Exceptional Service

World League of Agents has a clear objective: to provide impeccable service to clients around the world. This new non-profit Network unites yacht agents across the globe who share the same vision of providing exceptional customer service, each with a minimum of ten years of experience in the yachting industry. As the superyacht industry continues to grow, and the world of guest experiences becomes more saturated, there is more pressure than ever on the crew to provide unforgettable cruising experiences for guests – World League of Agents can assist your vessel in this endeavour.

World League of Agents are a global association

World League of Agents has gathered a group of super agents from all corners of the globe that share the same commitment to providing yachts with the highest degree of assistance. This eliminates the need for yacht owners and captains to spend valuable time seeking out agents wherever they cruise. World League of Agents is now your first port of call.

A Global Network

World League of Agents is more than equipped to greet your yacht wherever you might be cruising. Their members are located in all of the popular yachting hubs such as Spain, Greece, France, Monaco, Italy, The UK & Ireland, The US, The Caribbean, Turkey, Croatia and many more. See below their map of locations around the world:

World League of Agents locations

In addition, each member of the Network is an independent company with no ties to large corporations. Each member has voluntarily joined the group. As each agency has over a decade of experience in the yachting industry, as well as extensive knowledge of the local area and yachting industry, the work has already been accomplished. Moreover, every company operates with a commitment to transparency, promising there will be no hidden costs, commissions, or surprises associated with their services.

Based on their expert knowledge of the locations, each agency will provide the most current information about travel restrictions and regulations within their area. Agents within the league collaborate to make the best suggestions for their clients. Clients will also be in direct contact with the Managers of each agency. This approach maintains a personalised touch which is critical in an industry that can often feel detached.

The idea to form this community came naturally to the league’s founders as each organisation has been recommending one another to clients for many years:

“Clients do frequently ask us for recommendations of other similar agencies that match our standards and that’s what we did. We connect yachts with other companies within “The League”. Because we all share same values and same work ethics and commitment to the client, we have been already working together for a long time, recommending each other, to ensure our clients receive the best service when they are not in our areas. It just seemed a natural progression that we should formalise this strong alliance.” – Belen Martín, Managing Partner at Evolution and founding member of the World League of Agents

We will be writing features on each of the members, so that you can get to know them individually and discover their services. In the meantime, you can find out more about World League of Agents on their website and watch their video below to discover more:

Propulsion House Pulling-e launches Into The Yachting World

Propulsion House Pulling-e is entering the yachting sphere. After 25 years of knowledge and experience in the shipping world, they are expanding into an industry that is calling out for solutions to lessen its environmental impact.

Pulling-e

The launch: Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous

Propulsion House Pulling-e is exhibiting at the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous this month, on March 23rd and 24th. The event will be held at Yacht Club de Monaco during the Monaco Ocean Week. They will join other like-minded innovators wanting to create and inspire positive change throughout the yachting world.

The problem: a huge carbon footprint

Undoubtedly the carbon emissions in the superyacht industry should be on every stakeholder’s agenda, and it is certainly on theirs. But why is alternative propulsion so important?

For example, take a reasonably fuel efficient 40m motor yacht in the industry burning around 2,900 litres of diesel in 24 hours while underway (cruising at around 11 knots) using its engines – this is equivalent to 7.5 tonnes of C02. At anchor, running its systems, the same boat would burn around 360 litres every 24 hours, equivalent to 936kg on C02. These numbers are scary, and to think this is only one yacht.

Through Propulsion House’s alternatives, they hope to change these huge emission statistics.

SYC News: CrewPass Announce Official Integration With Yotspot

The Product: Pulling-e & DeeCee Microgrid

They are launching their solution-based services through two primary products; the tailored electrical propulsion, Pulling e-propulsion, and their tailored electrical platform, DeeCee Microgrid.

They have created these plug-and-play solutions for yachts, tailoring products to each yacht and enabling the zero-emissions concept to be practical and feasible.

Pulling-e:

The pulling propeller concept can be implemented onboard to optimise the consumption, with the potential for 10-20% efficiency improvement. It will also minimise the engine space onboard, freeing up more space for usage and design features.

DeeCee Microgrid:

The DeeCee Microgrid system runs independently of the main power grids by generating and utilising its power. It distributes and manages the energy from any electrical source, such as solar panels, fuel cells, batteries, and generators, to the propulsion and electrical network. Both products help improve the sustainability credentials of any yacht.

Their concept: The 44m yacht

After being approached by a Captain requesting a zero-emission yacht with a range of 5,000nm, Propulsion House developed their 44m yacht concept for the industry. With their solutions, they want to prove that it is possible for all yachts.

The zero-emission yacht concept is based on hydrogen, produced onboard from a mix of methanol and water through a methanol reactor. The onboard fuel cell turns the hydrogen into electricity, which is then connected to the DeeCee Microgrid. The electricity is distributed to the yacht’s needs and the electrical propulsion. The concept can potentially expand the vessel’s zero-emission operational range by additional 2.3 days. Without the need for electrical rooms, this design enables increased space utilisation, giving more design freedom and living space.

“Our study on the 44m yacht concept confirms that the long-range zero emission operation is feasible with the small but critical support from our product platforms. What makes me even more proud to speak about this result is that we are not presenting some overnight miracles but have arrived here after much experience with this developed electrical concept. Once you find the missing piece, something clicks, and you know that – this is it, this will be the way forward.”  – Heikki Bergman, CEO

Founder of Pulling-e

The future must be zero emissions for all yachts, and Propulsion House is facilitating this to make it a reality for yachting. They aim to inspire all shipyards to join them in their quest along this more sustainable path.

CrewPass Announces Official Integration with Yotspot

CrewPass has announced today that they have integrated their service with Yotspot, the yachting industry’s leading job board. This exciting partnership will continue to expand CrewPass’ integration rollout, whilst also looking to streamline Yotspot’s already stellar recruitment processes.

yotspot and crew pass partnership

“Yotspot are always seeking to improve the standards of safety and compliance during the recruitment process, across our platform and the industry as a whole,” Yotspot said in a statement. “Digitalising this is a natural decision for us, so partnering with the Crew Pass service to offer integration within our platform will hopefully improve compliance operations for employers and crew alike.” – Steve Crawford, Founder of YotSpot.

Managing Director of CrewPass, Conrad Empson gave his thoughts on the integration, stating:

“CrewPass was designed to give every crew member easy access to obtaining a full global background check while providing anyone with trusted and verified proof of undergoing this to anyone. Our integration with Yotspot gives every crew member the opportunity to showcase that to an employer every time they apply for a job. Our mission is to create a safer industry for all crew, owners and their families. Yotspot gives everyone access to the crew willing to put themselves through these checks. I couldn’t be happier to be working with Yotspot and providing our users with another place to showcase their Approved status.”

Yotspot’s crew profile will now provide a background check section within their profile registration forms, with the option to link jobseeker’s CrewPass account with their Yotspot account to provide the background checks needed to get CrewPass accreditation.

With this new integration, Yotspot profiles with CrewPass Approved checkmark will allow them to stand out more to employers displaying a Green tick next to their profiles. This will allow them to stand out in job searches done by employers.

St Katharine Docks In London Sold To Singapore Firm For £395m

The Singaporean billionaire Kwek Leng Beng’s City Developments Limited has bought the St Katharine Docks marina from Blackstone for £395 million.

St Katharine Docks

This 23-acre estate fronts the Thames and has over 500,000 square feet of mixed-use space, including London’s largest marina with up to 185 yacht berths.

In 2014, Blackstone bought Max Property Group for £448m, including St Katharine Docks. Originally, the estate was listed for £435m, but insufficient demand led to a withdrawal.

Sherman Kwek, CDL Group chief executive, says:

“The current uncertainty in the UK has provided us with strategic opportunities to acquire prime assets and expand our portfolio. This latest acquisition of the sizeable St Katharine Docks freehold estate, one of London’s trophy landmarks, increases CDL’s total commercial assets in the UK to around £1b and enhances our recurring income stream.”

“It complements our fund management strategy, providing us with the option to inject our UK assets into listed or unlisted platforms at an opportune time. In addition, there are ample asset management opportunities for us to demonstrate our ability to enhance value and improve operational efficiency.”

Over 5.9 million people visit St Katharine Docks every year, located in the heart of London near the financial district. The estate has been undergoing a £69.5m refurbishment since 2011, including building improvements, marina improvements, and more.

The marina won the prestigious 5 Gold Anchors Award for a second time in 2022.

It’s been home to the ’boutique’ London Luxury Afloat boat show since April 2022, created by the Southampton International Boat Show team.

Luxkite: A New Era For Kitesurfing In The Yachting Industry

Surf sports are becoming more relevant to the superyacht industry. As more charter guests and owners get into water sports, the industry needs more instructors, more frameworks and more solutions. To ensure an optimal learning experience, safety and exceptional service, we need to raise the bar and implement standards that match those of the yachting industry. Luxkite does that, for kitesurfing.

Focusing on large private yachts and charters, this company paves the way to a  worldwide accessible onboard kitesurfing experience – by offering stress-free  solutions for charter brokers, managers and crew they blend in with the flow of the industry.

To see what opportunities their approach might bring to you and what problems it will solve, keep reading below…

1. For Crew – Getting prepared to host kitesurfers

Kitesurfing is a complex sport, it involves checking the spot, the wind and weather conditions, setting up the suitable kites, launching and landing from the boat,  giving the right instructions and assisting the client with a tender throughout their session. It’s easy to get overwhelmed. It can be dangerous to host kite-surfers without the extra knowledge, even when they are experienced. So what to do when your next guest is a kite-surfer?

Luxkite have developed a crew training program in which their team will give you a look behind the scenes. Non-kiting crew members will learn the basic theories behind the sport  and the dos and don’ts of assisting a kiter. Kiting crew members are introduced to an optimal teaching process to maximise their client’s progress. If time allows, crew members get the chance to learn kitesurfing from the start. The goal is to  strengthen the crew’s competence and confidence, getting them prepared to host kiters on their next trip.

2. For Brokers – A kitesurfing solutions that fits every boat

The boat choice for charter trips is always dependent on the charter guests’ requirements and preferences. When it comes to more specific requests like kitesurfing, the possible selection of yachts narrows down quite drastically. Not all yachts are properly equipped, nor can they offer a safe setting for teaching  beginners. As a result, brokers have to compromise and can’t offer the boat they want. Something is missing there. A trustworthy kitesurfing solution that fits every boat, is easy to implement and can satisfy clients.

That’s what Luxkite is offering with their ‘Charter Trip Assistance’ (CTA). This service covers everything needed, from the right gear to highly trained instructors with the right amount of yachting knowledge. Their team tailors solutions to assist charter trips, either onboard the yacht itself or from nearby accommodations. The instructors integrate with the crew and dedicate their time onboard to training  clients and guests. Providing an unforgettable kitesurfing experience, that will last way beyond the client’s charter vacation, is their goal.

A ‘Charter Trip Assistance’ can not just help brokers to broaden their boat selection, but also inspire them to reach a new clientele by offering pre-planned kite itineraries to their prospects.

Attracting new clientele is something managers have to take into account as well…

3. For Managers – Smart marketing without the extra work

Reaching a wide clientele and maximising bookings for their fleet is a charter manager’s objective. With the correct positioning and a smart marketing strategy, they drive revenue to the boat and make sure the owner is happy. From the perspective of an ever-changing market, this isn’t always easy. As the client’s  behaviour changes, so do the offerings.

By joining the Luxkite ‘Yacht Assistance Program’ (YAP) managers can now link their yachts with the Luxkite service. They can market their boats with a full-service kite school onboard, without having to equip the vessel or hire an additional crew. The program takes care of all that, having the resources ready to jump on board and teach charter clients and their guests whenever there is a need. Besides that, the Assistance Program comes with a plethora of additional solutions for the vessel itself. Those can be discounted gear or gear subscriptions, premium availability, long-term instructors and the crew training.

As the Yacht Assistance Program integrates with the yacht, there are no extra costs for the charter clients. This makes it particularly easy to attract brokers and get them excited to start booking the low seasons.

Conclusion – The Start Of A New Era?

All in all, this company brings something to the market that has never been there before. By raising the standards in kiting and offering solutions exclusively for the yachting industry, they are bringing together two very different worlds. Their approach already got them recognised by major companies. Seems like the doors to kitesurfing onboard superyachts are finally open.

Time to get on the water!

The Latest In Eco-Conscious Superyacht Toys

What is a yacht charter without yacht toys? Having the right water toy setup is crucial to creating unforgettable experiences for guests, whether they desire to float peacefully around nearby coves on a Stand Up Paddleboard, or prefer to rip past the local beach club on a jet ski, there is a toy for every type of guest. With more need than ever to consider our carbon footprint, perhaps it’s time to consider the type of materials we are introducing to the water via yacht toys. Thankfully there are some incredible innovations hitting the eco yacht toy market that not only reduce carbon emissions but also look amazing and most importantly don’t compromise on fun!

SeaBob F5 SR

A long-time leader in yacht toy technology, SeaBobs are a must-have in any yacht’s garage of toys. The F5 SR model is the most powerful watercraft in their F5 series and is also emission-free. The F5 series works based on the patented ‘E-Jet Power System’, meaning that water is sucked in by a rotating impeller and then forced back out under high pressure. This technology means the toy requires little energy to operate and thanks to electro-technology, it is environmentally friendly with low operating costs.

Ray Eco – Stand Up Paddleboard

Designed to have the lowest possible impact on nature, The Ray Eco, supported by Fanatic is possibly the most sustainable Paddleboard in the world. The board is made entirely of sustainable wood, rather than glass or carbon fibres and without the usual foam core. The wood comes from the Kiri tree which comes from Germany, much like the board’s designers Michael Walther (Zero Emissions Project) and Jannek Grocholl (BoardLab). Even the letters on the side of the board are applied using natural pigments. Not only is it planet-friendly, it also looks elegant and moves effortlessly on the water.

“Water sports articles are pure luxury products that no one necessarily needs. It is therefore even more important to keep a critical eye on resource consumption and the impact on the environment” – explains Walther.

Tarform Raye Jetski

Inspired by one of the oceans most majestic creatures, the Manta Ray, the Tarform ‘Raye’ Jetski certainly looks the part. Moreover, it is consciously designed to have minimal impact on the environment and will be available in either recycled carbon fibre or Tarform’s ‘proprietary plant-based composite’. Part of Tarform’s intention was to translate the experience of an electric motorcycle into a jet-ski, and the Raye combines a biomorphic design, modular technology and plant-based materials. The product is currently still in the development phase, learn more about the product and be the first to know about its release by visiting their website.

Fliteboard Series 3

E-foils have been the water toy of choice in recent years. Even the most diehard surfers have raved about these futuristic looking electric surfboards – and the fun to be had when using one. Byron Bay startup Fliteboard have been at the forefront of this innovation since 2017, and have recently released the Fliteboard 3 model to their line. The boards are emission free, wake free and virtually silent which solidifies their credentials as an eco yacht toy, and a must-have for charter guests that want to try something new.

Albus Golf ‘Ecobioballs’

Golfing on the aft of a superyacht just became a little bit less ostentatious with these biodegradable golf balls by Albus Golf. Technically not in the ‘yacht toy’ category, but fun for keen golfing guests all the same. The balls are designed for use around marine environments and are one-use products. Ecobioballs are 100% safe for marine flora and fauna, they are made with non-contaminating materials and are also non-toxic. Even more impressively, when the balls hit the water their external layers biodegrade in less than 48 hours and release fish food that is contained in their core. Learn more here.

What To Expect At The Superyacht Charities Ball 2023

A night of entertainment, networking and charitable giving, attended by some of the industry’s most prominent institutions will go ahead on the 1st of April at the St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton where Superyacht Charities will once again hold their spectacular Superyacht Charities Ball.

We are thrilled to announce that this year Superyacht Content has partnered with Superyacht Charities for the event. We will be providing exclusive media coverage of the event, speaking with sponsors, guests and charities to discover what this event means to them.

Benefiting Those In The Yachting Industry

More than £600,000 has been raised in the last six years in support of several charities – the fund also helps those within the yachting industry who benefit most from it to ensure the industry continues to grow as an inclusive and supportive one. Superyacht Content is delighted to partner with such a great cause this year and to enjoy a night of networking and entertainment in support of several excellent charities. This year’s chosen charities are Sail2Help, Oceans of Hope, Team Endeavour and The Superyacht Charities Cash4Causes fund.

Lucy Johnson of Superyacht Content stated:

“We’re extremely proud to be the official media partner to the 2023 Superyacht Charity Ball, highlighting the charities within the yachting industry and promoting this year’s ball sponsors.”

The sponsors for the event are: Dohle, LA Marine, Speedcast, Peninsula Yacht Services, Nautica Assistance and Lurssen.

Welcome drinks will be sponsored by Compass Tenders from 6pm, around 510 guests are estimated to arrive in their finest dress to celebrate together. The main event is a three course meal with wine, sponsored by DSNM. Shortly after, an evening of entertainment follows including a band sponsored by The Viking Maritime Group, a Photo Booth by The Pinpoint Works, ACREW’s sponsored raffle as well as an auction sponsored by Njord by Bergman. The event will be captured by a professional photography team courtesy of Glancy Fawcett as well as Maritime Filming covering the Videography.

What’s Happening At The Event?

The night will conclude with the famous Speedcast afterparty, with an opportunity to capture the frivolity with the 360 photo-booth, sponsored by Luxury Hospitality Group.

Earlier in the day, Magnus Marine will host a cricket match at The Hampshire Cricket Club, where the Superyacht Charities trophy is once again up for grabs. Teams from Jaymo Technologies, Reedman Wealth, Magnus Marine, Laurent Giles and Sarnia will battle to take home the bragging rights and the sought-after trophy! All are welcome to attend to watch the teams compete!

Glen Taylor of Superyacht Charities stated that:

“Superyacht Charities are delighted to host our 6th Annual Charity Ball, whereby we bring this wonderful industry together for a night of fundraising. As trustees, we are extremely passionate about harnessing the energy and generosity of both individuals and businesses within the yachting industry to support some incredibly worthy causes.  During 2022, the SYC Foundation made a heartwarming 14 charitable grants, changing the lives of so many people. Having raised over £600,000 in the last 6 years, we want to continue and grow this legacy, to ensure we can be there to support when it’s most needed. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors, supporters and volunteers, without whom these events would simply not be possible”

How To Become A Marketing Success In The Superyacht Industry

Superyacht Content

So how, in two years, has SYC grown to be the leading news and media platform for Superyacht Crew? The answer is in the question; we delivered valuable news and media to Captains and crew all around the world. Our team did this in various ways, from utilising social media to working with companies in the industry to write educational features and read-worthy articles.

Our Head Of Marketing, Lucy Johnson, is going to tell you the story so far:

OUR OBJECTIVE

Mark Upton, a former Superyacht Captain who also holds a marketing degree, took ownership of SYC in 2021. He had two main goals.

  1. Turn the audience demographics to Captains and Crew. Plus, make them the core value of Superyacht Content by providing them with educational and valuable content.
  2. Show Superyacht Businesses a fresh way of marketing themselves without being charged a ludicrous figure just because “they’re in the Superyacht industry.”

So, that’s what we did.. Starting with building relationships and friendships with Superyacht Crew through our connections, website, and social media platforms. Then delivering different types of content; Career and training, travel, lifestyle, etc. Plus, with 50% of our company being ex-yacht crew themselves, this worked in our favour because

  1. If you’re in the yachting industry, we all know how small the social circle is and
  2. We knew what creative content and tone of voice would engage them.

HOW WE DO IT

We create mass exposure for Superyacht Businesses and put their companies in front of the key decision-makers on board (Captains and crew). Yes, a lot of you may say that a junior crew member isn’t who you’re trying to talk to, however, that same junior crew member could go on to become a chief stewardess/officer or even a Captain one day. Therefore, they will be the people you want to reach with your product or service.

HOW DO WE GENERATE THAT EXPOSURE?

  • By publishing interesting, engaging, and educational blogs/articles written in a tone of voice that speaks to crew.
  • Creating social media content and community building.
  • Stand-out banners (Again, there’s a misconception that banners are pointless, but the end results never fail to amaze us).
  • Issuing a weekly newsletter that includes ONLY information that is read-worthy to Captains and Crew.

Note – Although we make it sound and look easy, and to some extent it is, I still remember back when we first started, I would post a Superyacht video/article, and it would perform AMAZINGLY. Then, I’d post Superyacht crew content, and well… it was a different story. But fast forward a year, we stuck with our core value (Superyacht Crew), continued posting crew content and now, crew content is the top performing category on all of our platforms.

If something doesn’t work at the beginning, don’t get discouraged. Building a community and trust takes time, and this is an area that we can help you in.

HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?

By providing you with a digital platform where you can communicate with captains and crew members.

Additional marketing services we offer to businesses in the Superyacht Industry include:

  • Content Creation
  • Social Media Management
  • Photography / Videography

Do you need some exposure, are trying to reach the right audience or simply don’t know where to start? Get in touch and we will be more than happy to discuss your business, goals and what we can do to help. All at a very “un superyacht industry” price.

How Seahub’s Engineering Grant Grew Engineer Jackson Pinney’s Career

Following the launch of the second round of Seahub’s Engineering Grant for 2023, we spoke to 2021 winner Jackson Pinney about the impact that the grant has had on his career. Jackson was awarded $3000 towards engineering training courses at a school of his choice. Here Jackson shares with us how he utilised the funds and the ongoing support that he has had from Seahub founders Sam Wheaton and Matthew Hyde.

Jackson Pinney winner of Seahub's Engineering Grant 2021
Engineer Jackson Pinney

How did you first hear about Seahub’s grant program?

“Seahub [changes] the way the boat runs, make our lives easier and makes sure that we don’t miss anything”

Jackson: I first heard about the program from my previous Captain. I was a green engineer and had started my first solo engineering position and was trying to create my own maintenance schedules and procedures, and define how I wanted to organise my own department. My captain, Zach, used Seahub as his Engineering Software on his previous boat when he did all of his own engineering work and vouched for it saying that it would change the way the boat runs, make our lives easier and make sure that we don’t miss anything!
One day he saw a post on Seahub’s Facebook group for the Seahub Grant and said: “This is perfect for you! These are guys you want on your side!” – He was not wrong!

What attracted you to the grant?

Jackson: I was attracted to the grant because of the support that these guys were able to offer. I have never heard of anyone else offering scholarships for the yachting industry. Sam and Matt are incredibly genuine guys who really do care about mentoring, supporting and facilitating the next generation of guys who follow their footsteps into the engine room. This scholarship is a just a little taste of who these guys are and how they want to help others.

What did you use the grant for, and how was the overall experience?

Jackson: I used my scholarship to try to supplement my electrical knowledge. I felt that this was an area that I had a lot of room to grow in so I took the ABYC Marine Electrical Certification course and really helped fill in the gaps. I still have a little bit left in my scholarship and intend to use it towards my USCG DDE courses which will help progress me to the next level.

“The grant has grown my career in a lot of ways. Not only has it helped me get more certifications and tickets, but it has also allowed me to make very valuable connections with other engineers and captains”

How has the grant impacted your career?

Jackson: The grant has grown my career in a lot of ways. Not only has it helped me get more certifications and tickets, but it has also allowed me to make very valuable connections with other engineers and captains. The networking and resources from it is one of the most valuable aspects of it to me

Have you had continued support and contact with Sam and Matt?

Jackson: Yes, these guys are always a quick phone call away and they are always willing to lend a hand! One of the most important parts of being a new engineer (or any engineer for that matter) is having a rolodex of good contacts who can offer advice and recommendations when you hit a problem. If there is a problem that I hit a roadblock on and can’t get the answers to, I give Sam or Matt a call and my network has instantly tripled and they know exactly who to call to help me get the answers I need.

What advice would you give to others in the industry that are considering applying for the grant?

Jackson: My advice to someone who is considering applying for the grant is to just be honest about your experience and what it is that you want to learn or get from this experience. Seahub is a great company and whether you get the grant or not they are a great group to know and work with and it’s well worth forming a relationship with these guys going through your engineering career.

Do you have any current career goals?

Jackson: My current career goal is to learn as much as I can from all of the projects and opportunities I encounter. Everyday I am surrounded by new projects and contractors that are able to teach me their craft as long as I lend an ear. I want to set my self up to be in a position in the future that I can share that information and knowledge to someone else who is starting out and pass it on.

This Year’s Grant

This year’s recipient of the grant will also receive a $3,000 contribution towards training, as well as access to Seahub’s database of manuals and technical data sheets, and of course ongoing mentorship from Wheaton and Hyde.

So far, this year’s applications have been wide-ranging, from the US, UK, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and Holland. There have been a mix of nominations including an owner nominating an engineer he has recently employed, as well as crew members nominating engineers t

“This scholarship is just a little taste of who these guys are and how they want to help others.”

hey have worked with in the past.  The plans for the financial support for training have been focused on IT/AV courses and MTU courses.

Wheaton stated that: “This year’s candidate will ideally be towards the start of their career and have plans to be involved in the yachting industry long term”.

Seahub’s unique engineering grant is an exciting and invaluable opportunity for promising yacht engineers to excel in their careers, for more information on how to apply, or to nominate a fellow crew member, visit the Seahub website or email: info@seahub.com.au

Innovation Corner To Launch at Palma Superyacht Village 2023

The Palma Superyacht Village will for the first time host an ‘Innovation Corner’ in collaboration with Yachting Ventures, providing a space for startups to showcase new technologies

Yachting Ventures will host a startup tent at PIBS 2023

Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) kicks off the Mediterranean yachting season in Mallorca from 27th April-1st May 2023. With more than 300 companies exhibiting at Palma’s Moll Vell marina, the 2023 edition is set to be the biggest and best yet.

For the first time ever, PIBS will host an Innovation Corner during the 4-day event to support startups in the yachting sector. As a result of this new initiative, startups and industry professionals can talk about the future of yachting and what technology can do for us.

This year Palma Superyacht Village has generously allocated a lot of space for the Innovation Corner. This includes an outdoor terrace and is sure to attract a lot of media attention. The Yachting Ventures team will help shortlist the startups and invite them, as well as organize the logistics.

Arne Ploch, Palma Superyacht Village Managing Director, commented on the partnership:

“We are thrilled to announce that the Innovation Corner, a new initiative in collaboration with Yachting Ventures and the Palma Superyacht Village, will be featured at the 2023 edition of the Palma Boat Show. As an island, we understand the tremendous contribution of the yachting industry to our economy and acknowledge the significance of remaining innovative. We are eager to meet the selected start-ups participating in the Innovation Corner and offer them the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the attendees of PIBS this year.”

Yachting Ventures is a global startup hub for the leisure marine and yachting industries, providing the network, education, and opportunities that founders need to scale and raise investment. Commenting on the partnership, Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures said:

“We’re delighted to offer startups the opportunity to showcase their solutions to the industry by participating in the inaugural Innovation Corner at PIBS. There’s always a real buzz at this show, and I grew up in Mallorca so the event is personally one of my favourites in the yachting calendar. It signifies the start of summer in the Mediterranean, and it is especially important because it inclusively spans all sizes of yachts and watercraft.”

Mallorca is a key yachting hub, currently hosting more than 700 nautical companies that employ over 4,000 people and generate more than 420 million euros. With the infrastructure already established, the island is a strategic place to launch a startup in the nautical sector. Recognising this, the Innovation Corner is backed by the Government of Mallorca who encourage entrepreneurs to bring new products and services to market, and clearly recognize the economic benefits that the yachting industry brings to the island.

J-Class Yachts Added To Line-up For Ibiza JoySail 2023

For a regatta that is just beginning to gear up for only its third incarnation, Ibiza JoySail has very clearly already claimed its place in the international sailing scene. After a modest beginning in 2021 which attracted five superyachts to the late season festival of sail, last year saw the fleet almost triple in size with 13 entries signing up for the Balearic sailing event organised by STP Shipyard Palma and Marina Ibiza.

Expectations for a further step forward in the evolution of Ibiza JoySail – which will this year be held from 28 September to 1 October – have been heightened by the early disclosure that some J Class yachts will be joining the party alongside a strong contingent of returnees from 2022 and some new entries as well.

“It is early days of course, but we have had significant interest from almost all of the boats who participated last year and who want to do it again, which is a great tribute to Ibiza JoySail,” – said Regatta Director Nacho Postigo.

A strong fleet

Among those returning is the defending champion in the Perpetual Trophy and Performance Class, the Swan 115 Moat, no doubt eager to resume her tussle with the SW-RP90 ‘Allsmoke’ or compete with her twin Swan 115 Jasi, that will join the fleet.

Speaking with Moat’s owner Juan Ball about last year after securing a second successive victory, and looking ahead to 2023, he stated:

We knew that it was going to be difficult and that every error counts. That’s why we are so happy to have won. But next year we start from zero all over again.” He also highlighted other appealing aspects of Ibiza JoySail: “The social aspect is a lot of fun. Ibiza is very suitable for having a good time. I know Marina Ibiza very well and the service is exceptional. In STP they were also very helpful.”

Speaking at the 2022 gathering Moat’s captain Diego Stefani said, somewhat prophetically:

If we compare it with the event last year, we already have three times the number of boats. With the higher level of boats and crews I believe this regatta has the potential to become one of the most important regattas in the Mediterranean.”

On the other hand, All Smoke’s captain, Jürgen Feller, explained that:

last year we joined the regatta thinking only of competing, however, when we saw the atmosphere there and how much fun it was in the water and also on land, our perception changed and this year we don’t want to miss it. We are happy to compete but we also want to end the season enjoying the regatta, its events and the friends we made there last year.”

The returning competitors Swan 80s ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘Sapma’, as well as the YD120 ‘Bliss’ and Frers 155 ‘Hyperion’ have also confirmed participation. Moreover, first-timers such as ‘Prevail’, aY Yacht 90, ‘Aurelius’, a Dykstra 111 and the SW94 ‘Aragon’ will also join the fleet.

The grace of the J Class

The participation of the J Class has now been made official. It is confirmed that Svea, Topaz and Lionheart will join, with others expected to follow. This no doubt rises anticipation of the largely Ibiza-based regatta to new heights:

We are super-excited to be going to Ibiza JoySail and we are really looking forward to racing against the other Js,” said Lionheart’s captain Toby Brand. “It’s always great to be racing with them, and the event is the kind where the owner can race with family and friends alongside the core crew. We know Ibiza and Formentera well and we have been there many times in cruising mode, and it has never failed to deliver.” Adding “we consider STP to be part of the Lionheart family. We have been there for years, and they always look after us extremely well, especially the office team there – we are big fans.”

The appeal of Ibiza JoySail was echoed by Topaz’s Project Manager Tim Kröger, who said:

“First of all it is a good chance to race against our J-Class compatriots, and secondly it’s the challenge to participate in a fairly new event in a new area and attractive race waters. As a team we are looking forward to well organized races and a tempting venue promising good sport. We followed last year’s event which looked like a great success. When Topaz is in Mallorca, she is moored at STP and yes, since we know STP well, we believe that the available expertise helps.”

It is clear that the presence of the J Yachts represents an unambiguous nod of approval from one of the highest profile superyacht sailing groups and follows a visit to the 2022 event by their new class secretary Stuart Childerley. The world champion sailor and international race officer was clearly impressed by the excellent facilities and widespread expertise on offer at both STP Palma and Marina Ibiza.

It was the passion of the management team– explains Childerley, –they clearly showed, one, they have got a very competent team and, two, they are extremely passionate about the event, which is great. They also have the right people that would make the most out of the venue in terms of sailing conditions.”

The Mallorca-Ibiza Perpetual Trophy

With all to play for – and the new players no doubt out to make their mark at Ibiza JoySail – racers can look forward to Thursday 28 September and the start of the Mallorca to Ibiza Race, the 48 Nm challenge between the islands that kicks the regatta off in style. It is also the first opportunity to win some silverware, with the Mallorca-Ibiza Perpetual Trophy on offer to the yachts setting the elapsed time record between the lighthouses at Punta Cala Figuera on Mallorca and Tagomago Island off Ibiza. In last year’s edition, Swan 115 Moat was the champion in the Perpetual Trophy and this year will try to defend it.

Racing with new technologies

Keen not to rest on their laurels, Ibiza JoySail organisers have introduced an interesting change to the format of the opening race. Nacho Postigo explains:

“I always say the regatta is called Ibiza JoySail for a reason, it is not about having a hard time, so we will be using a new technology for the long race between Mallorca and Ibiza. We will use robotic racing marks for that, so if the conditions in the Bay of Palma are too light to start – and it was marginal for a time last year – the race committee will hoist the ‘follow me’ flag and start motoring towards Ibiza. If the wind gets up in the channel, as it did in 2022, then we will set a start line with the robotic marks and go racing. The race committee could also shorten the course in the same way. The important thing is that the owners and crews have a good time, and it is not a struggle.” concludes the event Director.

Ibiza Joysail has become a benchmark to be considered in the international regatta calendar since, due to its open and family&friends format, and being held at the end of summer, it is an attractive experience for closing the season and many regatta regulars no longer want to miss it.
