Porto Montenegro and Gulf Craft Now Offer A Deal On Home Berthing

As part of a new collaboration unprecedented in the marine industry, Porto Montenegro and Gulf Craft have teamed up to offer complimentary home port berthing to Gulf Craft’s owners who base their yachts in Porto Montenegro.

New Gulf Craft purchased in 2022/2023 are eligible for free seasonal or annual berthing, and owners who purchased a Gulf Craft in 2021 receive a 40 percent discount.

Porto Montenegro and Gulf Craft have joined forces to offer Complimentary Home Port Berthing for owners of new Gulf Craft yachts in Porto Montenegro.

In addition to the complimentary Silver Membership for two people at Porto Montenegro Yacht Club, owners of Gulf Craft boats who choose to berth at Porto Montenegro will be able to enjoy additional, highly attractive lifestyle benefits. Yacht Club members can use the spectacular Yacht Club Pool, the Sailing Squadron, and the Sports Club, which offer excellent services and amenities, as well as reciprocal membership privileges at over 15 yacht clubs worldwide.

The Porto Montenegro Marina Director, Tony Browne has said:

For two brands that are recognised as world leaders in their sectors, this partnership is an absolutely natural outcome of our years of friendship and great mutual respect. We are thrilled to offer Complimentary Home Port Berthing to Gulf Craft owners and look forward to welcoming them into our marina community.

The jewel of the Adriatic and the world’s first TYHA 5 Gold Anchor Platinum marina, Porto Montenegro resides in the stunning Boka Bay, among spectacular cruising grounds that remain relatively uncrowded even during high season. The naturally protected waters of Boka Bay benefit from a mild climate and 260 days of sunshine every year, making it the perfect spot for both cruising and sea trials. It is easy to reach all the major cruising grounds of the Eastern Mediterranean from Porto Montenegro.

Owners, captains and crew can take advantage of the full home port solution at Porto Montenegro. A wide range of yacht services and amenities are available on the marina’s 450 berths. This includes valet services and overview supervision for large vessels, as well as an onshore entertainment program.

Porto Montenegro is a very special place, with the magnificent natural beauty of its surroundings, outstanding quality of the marina and warmth of its people,” said Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft. “I cannot think of a better place as home-port for our yacht owners and we are honoured to form this partnership with Porto Montenegro.”

Home Port offers one full calendar year of berthing from the date a yacht owner secures their berth in Porto Montenegro, beginning in April 2022.

Our Top Superyacht Winter Port

With winter fast approaching, superyachts are now looking for a new port to call home during the winter months. Here at Superyacht Content, we voted on where we would want to spend our winter in the Mediterranean as Superyacht Crew. And here is why Porto Montenegro won:

Porto Montenegro

Porto Montenegro Marina is one of the best marinas in the Med. Superyacht Captains often choose this marina as their homeport because of its bespoke services, high-end facilities, and central Mediterranean location. Porto Montenegro topped our list this year because of its up-to-date facilities, a lively events programme, and great connections. We’re going to take you through everything you need to know before you arrive for your winter season.

Winter In Montenegro

The Montenegrin coast is a lovely place to be at any time of the year. Winter is mild, with average temperatures in January around 7/8 °C (45/46 °F). Chilly winds often bring down the average temperature, meaning you will probably not want to visit the beach without jeans and a jacket. This does, however, help keep the crowds down, making Montenegro a lovely area to explore during the winter months.

Fitness Facilities

With a long summer season, limited space and lack of routine, yacht crew most look forward to good fitness facilities to let off some steam away from the yacht. So, of course, we checked this out, and here’s what Porto Montenegro offers:

  • Indoor and Outdoor Gym
  • Personal Trainers – Offering one-on-one or group sessions
  • Daily Classes – including HIIT, Pilates, Yoga, Circuit Training
  • Swimming Pool – Access to the pool, free sunbeds and free access to a smaller pool near the sports bar
  • A Tennis Club and Squash Courts – With plenty of courts to hire
  • Weekly football and basketball sessions
  • Sailing – Offering Social sailing sessions every Thursday and Saturday from noon until 3 pm.
  • Rowing – morning rowing sessions around Boka Bay every Wednesday and Saturday
  • Archery – Lessons and help from a certified archery coach for individuals and groups.

On top of all this, they also have a stunning day spa offering bespoke massages and access to relaxing spa facilities.

What To Do?

All crew from yachts staying in the Marina are eligible for a free Crew Club Membership which entitles you to:

  • Discounts across the Porto Montenegro Village
  • Discounts in fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars
  • Entry to all crew events
  • Access to the Warsash Superyacht Academy Porto Montenegro Programme

The Marina is in the village, filled with excellent restaurants, lively bars, boutique shops and a beach club, meaning there is plenty to do right on your doorstep.

On top of this, there is an RYA Training Centre onsite, and Porto Montenegro has partnered with the Warsash Superyacht Academy. Warsash has launched a series of courses in Montenegro so yacht crew can work on their skills during the quieter months.

Winters in Tivat mean getaways to the north, skiing, snowboarding and fresh powder slopes. Each year, the Marina has a ski chalet available throughout the winter, giving yacht crew the ability to have some time away, immersed in nature.

Facilities here include:

  • A garden with BBQ
  • Free WiFi and private parking
  • Private rooms with showers
  • TV with satellite channels
  • Some rooms even have a mountain view

Events

Marina Montenegro has created a fantastic events calendar to keep your social life at its peak over the winter months. From pizza & bowling to wine tasting and Hawaiian party nights. They even offer Ski weekends and Spa Getaways. Every week they host a movie night and Saturday Sessions in the Clubhouse, meaning there is something for everyone.

On top of all of this year, they are hosting the Porto Montenegro Superyacht Winter Games marina director Tony Browne commented:

“We are very excited to be organising this incredible event for the third year in a row. The previous winter and summer events showed healthy competition from hundreds of crew and we have already received inquiries for this year’s edition. With social distancing challenges in mind, we needed to re-invent our Winter Games, which has produced what we believe to be the most interesting format to date”

Connections

While we do love the coast, mixing things up never hurts! Tivat Airport is a 5-minute drive away from the marina, and it takes less than 45 minutes to reach Belgrade, the regional epicentre of parties, shopping and hospitality. There are several daily flights between Tivat and Belgrade; making weekend plans has never been easier.

Porto Montenegro is up to a three-hour flight from major European cities, and there are three airports nearby: airport Tivat (7 km), airport Dubrovnik (46 km) and Podgorica airport (90 km), meaning rotational crew can get to and from the vessel easily.

For The Yacht

Although the downtime perks are important, we know you still have to work during the winter months. Porto Montenegro offers personalised packages to suit the work needs of captains and crew. Their benefits include:

  • A naturally protected port, offering maximum safety and protection
  • Tax-free fuel
  • Access to a full-service marina
  • Complimentary black and grey water disposal
  • Onsite helipad
  • Chandlery and provisioning
  • Experienced yacht agents

Adriatic42 Superyacht Refit And Maintenance Centre In Montenegro Open

Dubai, UAE, 2 November 2022: Adriatic42 Superyacht Refit And Maintenance Centre— a joint venture company between PM Holdings LLC, an Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) company, and Drydocks World Dubai, a DP World company, was recently officially launched. The announcement marks the beginning of significantly enhanced operations at the facility in Bijela, Herceg Novi, Montenegro.

The world’s largest sailing yacht, Black Pearl, became the first boat to dock in Adriatic42 Superyacht Refit And Maintenance Centre earlier this month for its ongoing refit. The Government of Montenegro granted a 30-year concession for the former Bijela shipyard which is located in the one of the safest natural harbours in the world, under Adriatic42, the shipyard is undergoing a comprehensive redesign, transforming it into a premium superyacht refit and maintenance facility.

The launch was attended by His Excellency President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, His Excellency Mohammed Al Shaibani, Managing Director of ICD, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, Captain Rado Antolović, CEO of Drydocks World and Chairman of Adriatic42, David Margason, Managing Director of Adriatic Marinas – Porto Montenegro, Stevan Katić, Mayor of Herceg Novi Municipality, Željko Komnenović, Mayor of Tivat Municipality, and numerous other dignitaries.

Adriatic42 already employs approximately 100 staff, who bring a long tradition of maritime expertise to the yard. The former Bijela shipyard, nearly 100 years old, was the largest ship repair yard in the Southern Adriatic. The new joint venture will extend this maritime heritage. Its location in one of the most sought-after seas in the world, makes it a haven for the global luxury yachting community.

President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, said:

“From this day onwards, the launch of Adriatic42 puts Montenegro at the centre of the world’s nautical tourism industry. Adriatic42’s comprehensive facility and service offerings from quality repairs and fabrication, as well as moorings, will allow yacht owners to enjoy Montenegro’s world-class marinas all year round.”

“We now have an international standard marina and refurbishment facility in the country, which further positions our nation as a prime tourism destination in Europe and the Mediterranean. Furthermore, Adriatic42 will be a beacon for economic opportunity in the country culminating in hundreds of jobs thanks to the shipyard, as well as a conduit for specialised small and medium sized businesses who can support the yachting industry.”

“Adriatic42 represents a massive opportunity for our country, now and in the future.”

Managing Director of ICD, Mohammed Al Shaibani, said:

“The Investment Corporation of Dubai is delighted that the joint venture between its operating business in Montenegro, PM Holdings LLC, and our expert marine engineering partner, Drydocks World Dubai, is being realized through the opening of Adriatic42 Superyacht Refit And Maintenance Centre. Together we’ve shared a long-held ambition to re-activate Montenegro’s former Bijela shipyard in Kotor Bay, and Adriatic42’s new refit and repair facility, with the extraordinary Superyacht marina village of Porto Montenegro as its backdrop, will create a unique and unrivalled year-round yachting hub in the Mediterranean. This is just the beginning for Adriatic42’s superyacht services, and we look forward to the employment opportunities and prosperity which they will bring to Montenegro.”

Chairman of Adriatic42, Captain Rado Antolović, said:

“The opening of this unique facility for the refit and maintenance of mega yachts, marks the beginning of a new era of sustainable and modern shipbuilding globally. It is also a great boon for the maritime and yachting sectors in Montenegro, with more than €40 million invested in the project to date, including for the acquisition of the state-of-the-art infrastructure and investments in sustainable technologies.”

Captain Antolovic also outlined the importance of environmental protection. Preserving the natural environment is a key priority for the new facility which is located in the unique Boka Kotorska. Adriatic42’s sustainable approach, which includes the highest environmental and safety standards to prevent environmental pollution, is supported by new and modern equipment that allows the facility to maintain an energy-efficient way of doing business and the intelligent use of alternative energy sources.

Porto Montenegro: Why The Marina Is One Of The Best In Europe For Crew

Porto Montenegro, the Mediterranean’s leading luxury yacht homeport and marina village, was awarded a TYHA Marina Award in 2017 at the London Boat Show. This year, the port is up for nomination yet again and with a wide range on offer for crew and guests, the port is an excellent location for yacht crew to be based this winter.

With its specific infrastructure, Porto Montenegro caters to the needs of the largest yachts, their owners, guests and crew with state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to 450 berths, the marina has 220 luxury apartments, 60 units of ground-floor retail, 30 restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and amenities, and a five-star Regent Hotel with over 80 luxury suites and apartments.

Superyacht Marina Of Distinction

As of 2017, Porto Montenegro holds five ‘Gold Anchors‘ – the highest accolade for service and operational standards available in the industry. Porto Montenegro was voted for by boat owners and berth holders to win the ‘Superyacht Marina of Distinction’ award for the timeframe of 2015 to 2017. Porto Montenegro was the first marina to win this award.

The Gold Anchor award scheme has been auditing marinas throughout the world for over 25 years and is well known as a credible measure of marina quality. Any rated marina will have been subject to a series of rigorous tests including a marina audit, mystery shoppers and customer questionnaires.

Jon White, General Manager of The Yacht Harbour Association says:

“2017 saw the launch of the accolade Marina of Distinction. This honour distinguishes a marina with over three consecutive years of continual customer service excellence, as voted for by its customers in the Marina of the Year competition. To qualify, marinas must rank a category finalist over three consecutive competitions. On the third year, they receive the title of Marina of Distinction. The first ever superyacht marina to receive this honour is Porto Montenegro.”

The Marina was also awarded ACREW’s prestigious ‘World’s Best Superyacht Marina’ in 2021, part of the annual Superyacht Business Awards.

With this award, ACREW’s network of around 15,000 Captains and Crew Members vote for the superyacht businesses that deserve global recognition. As the winner of the Best Superyacht Marina Award, it is recognised that Porto Montenegro consistently provides the highest level of services and facilities to Superyacht Captains & Crew and assists Superyacht guests to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The marina is up for the award again this year!

Marina Porto Montenegro is an excellent place to be based for crew

With excellent services for captains and crew, it’s no wonder that the marina is considered one of the best in Europe to visit. This year, the marina is offering more parties, more outdoor activities and more weekend getaways for crew. The marina maintains an excellent calendar of activities for crew to get involved in throughout the winter and summer months, including hiking, winery visits, movie nights, pub quizzes and much more. There are also regular social sailing sessions and parties held at the laidback ‘Blue Room’ cafe bar, a social hub for captains and crew.

Crew can also join The Crew Club for free, membership comes with many benefits such as discounts and special offers across the port’s restaurants and boutiques. Sports Club access is also included in the Crew Club membership, with access to the fully equipped indoor and outdoor gyms and discounts on classes. Porto Montenegro also partnered with Warsash Training Academy to deliver courses at the specially designed base within the port, so yacht crew can complete further training during their stay.

#MYBAPM2017: The third and final day in Porto Montenegro

What a roller coaster trip, it has felt like a week and a moment all at the same time and we have fallen in love with Montenegro. This year’s MYBA Pop-up Superyacht Show in Porto Montenegro has been a treat to attend and they could not have done more to show off what this tiny country has to offer.

Day 3 was our biggest yet, here’s what we got up to…

It was an honour to walk the show with industry veteran Eel Kant, the man responsible for a rather exciting infrastructure project due to take place in Montenegro in future.

Eel spent many years at Feadship before leaving to become one of the founding team at a fledgeling shipyard called OceanCo. Now he is working with Damen Shipyards to bring a superyacht refit facility to an abandoned shipyard in Montenegro. His yacht building knowledge is second to none!

We snooped about in some pretty sweet engine rooms; this one belongs to ICE LADY- I could have spent hours down here!

Returning to REVE D’OR, we were reminded not to touch anything in the ECR.

Captain Ian hasn’t been in touch so we assume no damage was caused…

We took a high-speed boat tour through the bay and landed at the incredible ‘Our Lady of the Rocks’

Did you know that fisherman spent many years trying to build this platform from piles of rocks? The first 100 years were a disaster, but after using shipwrecks from the area as a base they finally managed it, though it took 100 more years. And then another 100 to build the church itself! Dedication.

Fresh of the boat and walking down the dock, we were invited on a helicopter ride. And. It. Was. Unreal.

Here is a cool shot of Porto Montenegro from above:

Thank you, Porto Montenegro and MYBA for such a great show and for helping us to experience what an amazing destination this really is. Can we come back yet?

Montenegrin tourism soars as record numbers visit the Adriatic

Porto Montenegro and the Adriatic overall have experienced a stellar summer season in terms of superyacht traffic this year. To date, the marina has seen an 11% increase in the number of arrivals as compared to 2016 and a 17% increase in the number of yachts calling on the marina in the 50 meters+ category. These numbers are in line with the increased traffic patterns overall in the Adriatic this year.

The Adriatic Sea Tourism Report’s most recent study looked at over 330 structures currently operational in the Adriatic Sea which has a capacity of approximately 80,000 moorings. While the majority of these berths are earmarked for vessels under 20 meters, they do provide key insight into the sustained increase in traffic during the last two years (following the drop in 2014). This is the highest positive variation in all of the Mediterranean.

A post shared by Tourisme Montenegro (@tourisme.montenegro) on Jan 12, 2017 at 10:39am PST

In the current socio-political and economic climate the industry is facing today and in particular with new tax regulations facing the yachting industry, superyacht captains and brokers are looking further afield for cruising regions that are promoting strong yacht-friendly tax legislation while offering facilities that tend to the complex needs of the superyacht industry. Tony Brown, the Marina Director of Porto Montenegro, spoke to us today about this year’s traffic.

“We’ve witnessed increased footfall in the marina and a surge in the quality of superyacht charters this year. Porto Montenegro is continuing to lead the industry and set new benchmarks in marina services and standards, and the increase in traffic confirms that the Adriatic region, on the whole, is arguably one of the most talked about cruising grounds in the Mediterranean today. In addition to our facilities, our geographic location near 1000 islands to our north in Croatia and the growing popularity of that region mean that the entire Adriatic is experiencing consistently stronger interest. This is coming from the charter sector in addition to yachts selecting the area as their home port for the winter.”

The marina will be hosting the 3rd edition of the MYBA Pop-Up Superyacht Show from September 8th to the 10th, and in the final weeks leading up to the show registrations are strong and accommodation in the area are almost now at capacity. “Porto Montenegro will once again provide an ideal platform for owners, agents, and captains to showcase their prestigious superyachts and promote the scenic itineraries they have on offer. Brokers can also take full advantage of all the premium B2B opportunities that will be available to them throughout the show,” Tony also told us.

A post shared by Porto Montenegro (@porto_montenegro) on Jan 26, 2017 at 8:37am PST

The list of participants already includes industry heavyweights such as Fraser Yachts, IYC, Ocean Partners, YPI, CharterWorld, Camper & Nicholsons, TWW Yachts, and CSO to name a few. The Show kicks off on the morning of September 8th with yacht viewings and will end with a spectacular closing party set against the backdrop of the scenic Bay of Kotor on the eve of September 10th. With a packed itinerary of guided tours, yacht hops, and seminars on the region from industry experts, attendees will walk away with a wealth of knowledge on not only the cruising opportunities but they will also learn about the fiscal and regulatory issues that demonstrate how Montenegro is working to support this burgeoning industry in the area.

Registration is now open for international brokers, agents, suppliers, and service providers via the MYBA website.

About Porto Montenegro

A post shared by * private profile * (@earthplanetluxury) on Aug 9, 2017 at 7:53am PDT

Porto Montenegro is the Mediterranean’s leading luxury yacht homeport and marina village. The state-of-the-art facility has been designed to cater to the advanced needs of all yachts, their owners, guests, and crew with specific infrastructure for the largest yachts afloat. The marina currently has 450 berths, 228 sold-out luxury apartments, as well as 55 units of ground floor retail made up of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, and amenities.  The five-star Regent Hotel on the marina property has over 80 luxury suites and apartments.

People are investing in this country and it sounds like a smart move

There’s a lot to be said about the crew lifestyle. On one hand, it’s extremely tough, monotonous hard work. On the other, highly rewarding and laced with the opportunity to do things very few people in the world can afford to do.

It is well known that crew are handsomely paid, or rather, have the opportunity to save considerable sums. This cash may be used to pay for education, mortgages or to start businesses, but equally, there are incalculable stories of money spent on just having a wild time.

For those who want guidance on what to do with their cash, there are a number of experienced advisors in the industry, who know and understand the exact requirements of crew. These teams are able to tailor advice to your needs, whether it’s saving or spending.

Safe as houses

Many choose to invest their money in property. This could be at home for family, a rental proposition or possibly even a second home. But perhaps the challenges of a career in yachting is affecting your loan situation with lenders?

As Mark Upton of CrewFO observed, “Investing in rental property is a great idea for crew as it reduces your financial liabilities and means that essentially someone else is paying your mortgage for you. Crew have challenges specific to yachting, such as occupation, source of funds and currency of salary, so we help with all of these and our mortgage team have a 100% success rate with crew to date.”

Where should you buy?

It makes sense to buy what you know because there is perceived less risk. But what do you know? Perhaps it’s much wider than you realise. Being crew at sea, sailing the coastline and into the myriad marinas around the world, you have first-hand experience and insight into good, medium to long-term opportunities.

For example, regular readers will know that the team at SYC is particularly partial to the Adriatic, and after visiting the region earlier this year, Montenegro especially. Nestled between Croatia and Albania, Montenegro’s expansive coastline has lured visitors with historic fortifications, UNESCO-listed landscapes and pretty coastal villages. The region is being invested in heavily now, with arguably the majority coming from the Middle East. Indeed, economic impact studies by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) put Montenegro into the spotlight as one of the fastest growing travel and tourism economies globally over the next half-decade, and by 2021 capital investment in travel and tourism is forecast to be 50.8%.

A calculated investment

When you consider this, the personal investment opportunities are considerable. Of course, not without risk, but even in this region, there are safer options – not least the now well-established Porto Montenegro. Despite the size of the village now, there is still 70%+ to develop.

The incentives to buy here are hugely attractive, with only 9% VAT on company and capital gains tax (one of the lowest in Europe – and you might be well advised to establish a company in Montenegro to purchase a property with a view to rentals). In fact, Porto Montenegro is forging a new concept for Adriatic ports and offering to reimburse people’s stays if they come and then book a long lease berth making it the perfect excuse to have a look for yourself for free!

It has tax free incentives

Furthermore, there is an additional incentive for yachts to make the marina their homeport. With no tax on charters, no national insurance on foreign crew, reduced VAT on marine services and duty and tax-free fuel advance Porto Montenegro’s merit as a financially pragmatic charter base. You can have a home in the winter period, close to your place of work, that’s paid for by letting it in the summer when you’re at your busiest. What’s not to love?

Smart growth

Crucially, the infrastructure and conditions to support investment at Porto Montenegro are pointing in the right direction for smart growth. With the opening of the refit yard (more announcements on this to come), you would be forgiven for thinking the smart money would come from the crew who are already in the know. So the question shouldn’t be where to buy, but how much can I afford to invest? Enquiries can be made here.

*Disclaimer this does not constitute investment advice and you invest in property at your own risk*

#MYBAPM2017: what happened on Day 1

The MYBA Pop-Up Superyacht Show in Montenegro is in it’s third and final year, but one thing is for sure: Porto Montenegro as a destination is about as stunning as you can get. From high-end boutiques to endless docking space and surprisingly tasty local wines; no expense has been spared in the development of this superyacht destination, and you can expect to see many of your favourite big-name superyachts making this their home in future years to come.

Take a quick look at what we got up to on Day 1.

The first yacht we visited was Sanlorenzo‘s REVE D’OR, managed by IYC yachts and exclusively for charter in the Adriatic.

Particularly impressive was the level of support IYC offer this boat in the region, with their own network of agents and yacht support offering a premium service across Montenegro and Croatia to cater for every guest’s most whimsical need…

What a day for a yacht show! Porto Montenegro was basking in beautiful sunshine, and the view from the sundeck was absolutely breathtaking.

And it turned out the captain had been on the same flight out as us, although he was quick to remind us we shouldn’t use our phones during take-off and landing!

Next up was classic Feadship BG, which underwent a substantial refit in 2015 at Derektor in Florida. Her Hamptons-style interior was both bright and luxurious.

Her captain and crew seemed to be huge fans of Porto Montenegro, and planned to stay for a few months…

A post shared by Superyacht Content® (@superyachtcontent) on Sep 8, 2017 at 10:01am PDT

Third on our list was Sailing yacht RIANA, a local girl whose owner has been a huge influence on the development of Montenegro as a superyacht destination, and also likes to play the banjo!

This boat is an incredible option for families looking to split a charter, as her layout is ‘symmetrical’ and offers equal accommodation options to all charterers onboard (…so no arguments over who gets the master!). RIANA is all about guest experiences, and her management team is busy crafting a full selection of unbelievable opportunities for charter guests for next season around the Mediterranean- including a picnic on a volcano…

This exceptional visit meant we were rather sidetracked, and unfortunately had to stay onboard for drinks.

The last yacht we visited was the giant floating toy-box, GOLDEN SHADOW: Available for charter as a support vessel.

Did you know that on one charter she was hired to carry 12 supercars for the guests on the mothership?!
