Why The Canary Islands & Azores Are Perfect Mid-Atlantic Stops In 2022

The Med Season is fast approaching, which means yachts and their crew will begin their journey across the Atlantic into the Mediterranean seas. But why Are The Canary Islands & Azores the Top Mid-Atlantic Stops in 2022? AYSS Yacht Support currently has 21 Superyacht Agents located within the Med region to support vessels and crew upon arrival. However, since the global Superyacht network also has representatives in the Mid-Atlantic, we are able to share what makes them a good stop-off for captains and crews.

The Azores

Azores - Top Superyacht Mid-Atlantic Stops in 2022

Historically, The Azores have been a favorite stopover for sailors, but 2022 is looking particularly busy with Superyachts set to flock to The Islands to stop-off, typically for fuel, before continuing on to the Med. While not previously being on the list of top Mid-Atlantic stops for Captains, 2022 deems different. Crew have realised they’ve been missing a trick all these years and they’ve decided to act upon it.

Things for captains, crew, and guests to do in the Azores:

1. Explore the marine life in untouched waters

The series of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean attract a great deal of Marine Life in the Mid-Atlantic, much different from the sealife you’d find in the Caribbean or the Bahamas. With deep, crystal waters, guests and crew can go snorkeling, shallow-water diving, or adventure into the depths to deep water dive and whale-watch from up close.

2. Swim in Varadouro’s rock pools

Formed by basaltic rocks that were formed with the solidification of lava in the ocean, Varadouros rock pools offer one of the most unique swimming spots in the world.

3. Cook your dinner inside a volcano

The town of Furnas is located on So Miguel, the largest island in the Azores and the mouth of an active volcano. Th town is home to hot springs, which are too hot to bath in however, ideal for cooking. You’ll often find locals in the community visiting the springs to make hot drinks and food.

4. Wine tasting

It’s been said for centuries that the volcanic soil in the Azores gives their wine the most distinct taste, leaving visitors coming back for more. Visiting an Azorian Vineyard will give yourself, the other crew members, or the guests a unique experience and understanding of how the community uses the local technique of ‘growing the vines in currais’.

5. Take a Jeep tour/hiking tour

You’re surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, mountains, and waterfalls, so why not make the most of it? Go exploring by foot, or hire a jeep, with a tour guide to make the most of the scenic beauty on your short stay in the Azores.

The Canary Islands

Superyacht top mid-atlantic stops in 2022

A Spanish Archipelago off the northwestern coast of Africa, The Canary Islands are made up of 7 islands: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Over time, more and more Superyachts have been yacht spotted arriving in the canaries to re-fuel, berth, and store, but this year more so than ever before has seen a spike in interest from Crew and their guests inquiring about exploring what the islands have to offer.

Things for Captains, crew, and guests to do in the Canary Islands:

1. Visit the underwater sculpture museum

Off the coast of Lanzarote (East of the Canary Islands), 15 metres deep underwater you’ll be greeted by the Atlantics museum, with 35 sculptures sitting in the depths.

2. Get active

The volcanic heritage of the Canary Islands makes it a paradise for sports and outdoor activities of all types, including kitesurfing, trekking, mountain biking, bird watching, and dolphin and whale watching. Or, why not take a hike through one of the islands’ many national parks, such as Caldera de Taburiente National Park in La Palma or Teide in Tenerife.

3. Book a stargazing tour

Did you know the Canary Islands are one of the top-rated places on the globe to stargaze? The night skies are clear and are legally protected to prevent light and radio wave pollution and control flight patterns! Unbeatable observatories are available on Tenerife, La Palma, and Fuerteventura where you can participate in guided stargazing tours.

4. Visit a wellness spa

Whether you’re looking for a location to sit and relax or to participate in beach yoga sessions, volleyball, paddle boarding, or swimming, the canary islands’ mineral-rich springs are renowned for attracting wellness tourism.

5. Wine and dine

Take some time to step onshore and enjoy the canary islands cuisine – seafood, wines, cheeses, and fruit, like the famous Canarian banana. The choice is yours whether you’d like to fine-dine one of the islands Michelin star restaurants, or opt to Eat how the locals do: share tapas, fresh seafood, and traditional foods (typically made from locally sourced ingredients)

MB92 La Ciotat Superyacht Shipyard Closer To Completion

MB92 La Ciotat, France’s leading superyacht refit shipyard, announced that a major milestone has been reached in the construction of the platform, maintaining the shipyard’s schedule for the opening of the facility as planned this autumn for yachts up to 115-metres in length.

MB92 Superyacht Refit Shipyard

What’s new?

Following the delivery last summer of the main elements of the structure and 9 months of engineering work on-site, the Matière-Bardex team has now completed the complex task of assembling and moving the lifting platform to its final position. At 100 metres in length, equivalent to a football pitch, and 20 metres wide, the platform weighs 1,100 tonnes and required a team of 20 people and 3 hours to carry out the exceptional manoeuvre of moving the shiplift structure and 2 days for the final installation in the concrete recess.

The innovative Bardex lifting system which includes 20 chain jacks is now being installed and features a hydraulic ram and chain system expressly designed to increase safety and reduce maintenance.

MB92 La Ciotat Shipyard

The Installation of the world’s largest artificial harbour-based fish nursery:

The platform’s docks have been equipped with a biomimetic solution supplied by the company Seaboost. Based on the complex structure of Posidonia seagrass, this solution creates an effective, integrated, and safe environment that will encourage the reproduction of local marine species.

In addition to the nursery, La Ciotat Shipyards, the local port authority, have administered an exemplary project, implementing numerous environmental measures during the construction phase such as soil decontamination, reuse of materials on-site, installation of a double bubble curtain, and anti-sediment curtains to protect cetaceans and water quality.

Mathieu Bauden, MB92 La Ciotat Facilities Director comments:

“This is a key stage in the delivery of the 4300t platform which leaves us well-positioned as we enter the final six months of the project. The next important steps are the delivery of the control building, the installation of all energy networks, reception of the transfer system, the cradles, and final testing followed by certification by Lloyds this summer.”

Vincent Escallier, Commercial Director of MB92 La Ciotat added:

“We are all looking forward to the imminent opening of our new facility and this latest accomplishment brings us one step closer. It’s an extraordinary piece of infrastructure that complements the wide range of lifting options available to clients of our shipyard.”

SuperYachtsMonaco Sells M/Y Oryx using Bitpay – Yacht Broker Interview

An Interview with Juan Andrade, the yacht broker who represented SuperYachtsMonaco on the sale of Benetti Yachts 40m M/Y ORYX using Cryptocurrency

SuperYachtsMonaco is proud to announce they are now accepting Bitpay as a form of payment. The 40.2m Benetti superyacht ORYX was recently sold for €9.9m through the Monaco brokerage, using a cryptocurrency payment provider. Simon Goldsworthy and Hans Van Doornmalen of Edmiston represented the seller, whilst standing in for the buyer during negotiations was SuperYachtMonacos, Juan Andrade.

Accepting yacht payments through Bitpay is a new feature for SuperYachtsMonaco. The desire to purchase and charter yachts using cryptocurrency is ever-increasing, with more and more companies adopting new technologies to facilitate this demand.

“The ability to accept cryptocurrency enables SuperYachtsMonaco to attract new customers and sales by tapping the massive crypto marketplace,” said Juan Andrade. “Bitpay manages the entire process and makes it easy to receive crypto from the customer and adapt their approach to each client’s personal situation.”

The yacht itself features an interior updated in 2018/19 courtesy of Francois Zuretti, with an exterior design by Stefano Righini. ORYX yacht is an excellent showcase of the popular Benetti Classic Supreme model and has timeless appeal. The vessel accommodates up to 10 guests across five cabins, including a full-beam Owner’s suite with his and her’s bathroom on the main deck forward.

An exclusive interview with Juan Andrade

1. When did SuperYachtsMonaco decide to introduce Bitpay as a form of payment for yacht sales, yacht charter, and yacht management?

Juan: “Back in September last year, the client approached me to explain that he wanted to purchase his first yacht through SuperYachtsMonaco, but he wanted to pay using Bitpay. From there, I said ok and went and did my research on the logistics around cryptocurrency to see my options, which is when I approached Bitpay.”

2. How long did it take you to set up Bitpay?

Juan: “I’d say about a month, to a month and a half. The process was quite straightforward and by around November, we were ready to move forward with the transaction process. Still to this day, I’m not a cryptocurrency expert however, I now know a lot more and it’s opened a whole new market for the Superyacht Industry. ”

3. What are the key benefits for a client to go down the route of purchasing a yacht using cryptocurrency?

Juan: “I think each benefit is different for every client as they will have their own reasons to support their decision to buy a yacht in crypto, rather than fiat money. But, for SuperYachtsMonaco brokerage, the main benefit is that in regards to the transaction process, the banks aren’t involved which makes the process a lot quicker.

4. Did you find any challenges along the journey?

Juan: “The process was simple, and the only challenge we found was not many people understand or trust cryptocurrency. People still have a lot of questions about Bitcoin and the culture around them, but the process on behalf of SuperYachtsMonaco is fully understood and easily done.”

5. Will the yacht be managed using Cryptocurrency?

Juan: “Without commenting on a specific yacht, I do know that there are vessels out there that now manage the whole yacht using Bitpay, right the way down to crew salaries. It will only be a matter of time before we see this occurring on more yachts around the globe”

5. Will SuperYachtsMonaco continue to offer Bitpay as a form of digital payment for their clients?

Georgia, Head of Marketing at SuperYachtsMonaco comments:

“100%. We’ve now developed our website, with an added landing page specifically for Bitpay. We are now ready to accept almost all cryptocurrencies for sales and charters. Since the sale of Benettis 40m M/Y ORYX, we’ve also had another client charter a yacht with us using digital assets.”

West Nautical – A Review of The Caribbean Charter Season

In this interview, West Nautical discusses the 2021/2022 Caribbean charter season, as well as how the summer 2022 charter market currently looks.

We got chatting to West Nautical‘s Client Manager, Claire Sinclair about how the Caribbean charter season has played out. As well as how the 2022 Med season is looking for West Nautical.

Read on to find out which Caribbean spots were the most popular destinations, what charter yacht sparked the most interest and a peek into the current Superyacht market.

31.7m Sailing Yacht Elton - A review of West Nauticals 2022 Caribbean Charter Season

Overall, how has the Caribbean charter season been for West Nautical?

The season began with the yacht show in Antigua & there were several bookings over the holiday period (Christmas & NY) …The difference in restrictions between islands and the closing of BVI’s to new charter yachts proved to be off-putting to Europeans, but the USA market remained strong!

With the Caribbean charter season coming to an end, which months of the season were the busiest for West Nautical?

We were definitely busiest around Christmas & New Year, mainly the months of December and January.

In our previous chat, you mentioned that the Caribbean charter season was dying down due to various reasons, such as cost, dockage, fuel, crew costs, and difficulty getting visas for the US Virgin Islands. Was this the case with regards to this year, or did the season take a positive turn?

The season was still quiet by previous standards, however as mentioned above, West Nautical was very busy in the months of December and January, with Christmas and the New year taking place. Our team did find that for regatta charters (sailing), the interest was strong.

Everyone knows that St. Barts is the place for Superyachts in the Caribbean. Did you notice an increase in the demand for yacht charters in any other locations this season?

St Barts remained a Caribbean Hot-spot for the charters, with St Maarten and Antigua being the other two main islands in demand over the winter period.

What has been West Nautical’s most successful charter yacht in the last year?

For the 2022 Caribbean season, it was the luxury 31.7 S/Y Elton.

Have you noticed any real changes in the charter market since the omicron variant?

No, I haven’t. Charterers are keen to get back out into the world and travel where’s possible/if possible. If anything, there is a degree of apathy regarding covid and guests, captains and their crew are looking forward to their travels around the Med in 2022.

Lastly, what does the summer 2022 charter market currently look like?

West Nautical is proud to say that the Superyacht summer season has started with record bookings! Our team is all go and we’re already heavily booked, with limited availability on peak season dates so if you haven’t already booked your Med season charter, get in contact asap!

ISA Yachts, a Palumbo Yachts brand has announced the beginning of construction on a new 80m project, Amarcord. The vessel, which features a design penned by Nuvolari Lenard is due to be delivered to her prospective owner in 2025.

“We are confident that Nuvolari Lenard can best interpret such a beloved brand as ISA Yachts, starting from our 80m already under construction. This will be an opportunity to work with them on other interesting innovations in the stylistic field”, comments Giuseppe Palumbo, Sole Director of Palumbo Superyachts.

ISA Yachts Amarcord
The exterior design of Project Amarcord.

Nuvolari Lenard’s mission is to style the outside of the superyacht in a way that captures ISA Yachts’ blend of beauty and strength. With this in mind, Amarcord features a sophisticated and futuristic exterior design, with clean lines and a sharp profile. The elongated bow and cascading decks to aft add to the sleek look the Italian design house is trying to achieve.

“We are designing a yacht that conceptually and stylistically connects with the many others built by ISA Yachts so far. It is not an easy task, considering that ISA boats have always had a strong personality and the ultimate goal is to further strengthen it by ‘dressing’ it with an innovative, recognisable and unique style”, comments Carlo Nuvolari.

Alongside, 24-hour security and onsite customs, members will have access to state-of-the-art fitness centres, swimming pools, meeting rooms, and charter management services to use and enjoy. The marina will also provide laundry facilities, in-slip fueling, and 400-amp/480-volt power that all contribute to the property’s unique appeal.

The marina’s mixed-use component, Sterling Commons, which includes residential, retail restaurants, and facilities is conveniently positioned next to the marina. Sterling Commons also has a private bank and trust, as well as executive office spaces offering daily and monthly office leases. A flagship retail store for 700 Wine and Spirits is now open and will be followed by a gourmet grocery store and waterfront restaurants. The master-planned yachting village’s residential component will eventually feature luxurious dockside residences and ample amenities for owners, guests, and yacht crew. The first phase of residential condominiums is sold out. Sterling is now taking reservations for Phase 2, which will be available soon.

M/Y Loon

Captain Paul Clarke of Motor Yacht Loon shared:

“We believe Bitcoin is the future of global currency. Forward-thinking and welcoming new ideas has always been a strong part of Loons’ ethos. Accepting Bitcoin fits perfectly with these principles and supports inclusivity, especially for the younger generation of charter guests who are often more comfortable with a decentralised currency such as Bitcoin. Cryptocurrency expands borders, Loon is expanding her horizons with the upcoming trip to Europe, and we look forward to inviting a new wave of charter guests on board.”

Particularly popular with American charterers Loon regularly usually welcomes high-profile guests to explore the Bahamas and Caribbean. This year the 55m Newcastle 5500 series will be chartering Europe from May until October. Although much of the summer season is already booked, Loon has just released dates for the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, and two other weeks mid-season.

FAQ With the Captain of M/Y LOON, Paul Clarke:

1. What cryptocurrencies does M/Y Loon accept?

We currently accept bitcoin and are open to other cryptocurrencies such as ETH, BCH, DOGE, XRP, etc. However, we would have to review each individual coin offered to make a decision on its value.

2. Many still deem Cryptocurrency as being “Volatile”, how will you go about managing this?

We don’t see any major drawbacks. It’s really just a way to increase our exposure to more clients. As well as, to make it easy for Crypto Whales to charter M/Y Loon without having to sell their Crypto into currency to pay for the charter.

3. Will the whole management of the yacht now be dealt with through cryptocurrency, Ie crew salaries etc?

We will continue to operate the yacht in the usual way, with the additional factor of adding crypto as an additional currency for charter bookings.

4. Who decides to accept crypto? The yacht owner, or the management company?

The decision was made by our owner. Inclusivity is really important to all of us and accepting crypto is another way to expand on this.
